Peugeot 1.6HDi Engine Stuttering

Hi guys, my boyfriends van is a Peugeot Partner 2007 reg, but it has got a different engine in - the 1.6 HDi 92bhp from the Peugeot 307.
An intermittent fault has developed over the last few months, and I was wondering if anyone has an idea of what it could be before we spend a load of money on it?
On the vehicle's first journey - normally in the morning, intermittently when driving a long there is a flat spot on acceleration, the engine completely dies though and causes the van to jolt and kangaroo. It is only like this for the first journey of the day normally and then won't happen again until the following morning. It doesn't matter if the weather is hot or cold - it doesn't seem to have an effect..
It seems to me like the EGR valve is possibly sticking? Any help people?
