Ford maverick v6 2001

As per the BB thread i have bought a Ford Maverick, a car i never knew existed until until a few days ago.

My last car had succumb to HG failure after 35k miles in 2 years, doing a 70 mile commute with no major issues.

My contract had finished so my new job is 11 miles from home instead of 35miles, so I decided to branch out a bit, i really wanted a v8, but couldn't find one in budget.
So this popped up on ebay, contacted the buyer got information seemed good, but decided to keep looking as 23mpg is still not great. A few days later i saw it still for sale, decided f-it, and bought it for 425 pounds. The sad bit was that the seller wanted a quick sale due to terminal illness of his wife.

12 months mot
4 x new bridgestone tyres
84k miles
cb radio
new battery
new cat
Half a tank of fuel
Aircon cold, no signs of rust.
everything works bar central locking
no service history but he said his son did it and no one spends 500 quid on tyres without looking after it.
i will get an oil change, national tyres do it for 45 quid (6 litres lol)
i will change the air filter myself and maybe later in year get plugs changed.









it seems the the maverick has an interesting yet forlorn history in the uk. it is based on the Mazda tribute another low key car, that didn't get much press , sales or attention.

it was sold in the uk at a time Ford owned Land Rover and would have directly competed against the Freelander, so i guess Ford decided to mute launch of it..

It is fwd with torque sent to rear wheels under slippage and can be locked in 50/50 split manually.

The v6 is a real great engine, responsive, and more bhp than the old LR 4.0 v8.

The autobox , the seller said was from the s-type seems strong and easy to use.
Has an overdrive function not sure what that does.

So any negatives really are 300 pounds a year tax, expected 23mpg and that is it. It really is a well put together car, the seat are really comfy and leather looked after. Very solid cars it seems.

unfortunately i lost my job so had to sell to get something cheaper to run. it was very sad as it was a really great car, the v6 engine is probably one of the best ive driven.

I think that's a 2nd generation Maverick? The first one was a weird top heavy looking thing that was a rebadged Nissan Terrano, body on frame, and had a proper AWD system and probably some half serious off road capabilities. Competitor to the Vauxhall Frontera rather than anything you'd actually want to drive on road.

Is it a Duratec 3 litre in yours? If so that's a really fantastic engine.

i regretting selling it, still keep my eye out. it really is a car that goes well and not as dated as it should be, nearly 20 years . it is column mounted shifter. the engine is a peach it really upsets the derv brigade.

That Duratec V6 is, for me, one of the best V6 engines ever fitted to mainstream cars. The mazda version in this might have had VVT, which made it even better as it dealt with the somewhat toppy power curve.

Correct, the second generation can also be found as a Mazda Tribute.

Yes it’s basically a Mazda Tribute, duratec V6 200bhp. Suits me perfectly as a dog mover, parts mover, tip runner etc haha.
It’s very US with the column shifter and huge cup holders.

Love these obscure, unknown, over-engined and hence bargain priced cars!

Way better choice than a similar age Freelander.

Had a bit of a thing for American SUVs after watching the likes of 24.

Considering a maverick as a sane, UK liveable alternative to the likes of GMC Yukons/Chevy Tahoes/Ford Explorers etc

Might go looking at them when my lease is up at the end of the year- do you see yourself selling this one around then OP?
