MX5 turbo (at last)
Discussion
Been "toy" car -less for a while and as did not want to spend too much (as we are looking to live aboard in the Med in a few years and therefore starting to down size stuff) thought I would get something to have some fun with for a year or so. An MX5, with forced induction, was therefore on the list and seemed good value for money and tick the boxes for handling, value and with FI....performance.
So, picked this up a few weeks ago:

270bhp, LSD and in very good condition.....that will do!

Previous owner did the turbo conversion and it has been done well with all new parts including megasquirt3, bigger injectors, stainless rad and inter cooler, reconditioned td04 turbo on a proper manifold, custom exhaust etc. seen a few with just a turbo thrown for an extra 50bhp...
And it is not too "sceney"

230 at the wheels, that makes alot more sense
How much boost is it running out of curiosity? my freind's DIY turbo build on a 1.8 using a TD04 managed to get 228bhp on 11psi when tuned by skuzzle, pretty good result as normally they have to go up to 14psi to get that power result.
Agreed, 230 sounds like what I’d guess on a TD04. I bet it’s a right hoot to drive!

Do you get much induction noise with your setup? I always love turbo cars that have a lot of induction noise and when I changed my TD04 to a full induction kit it sounded fantastic to me.
Any plans to track it?
Induction noise and waste gate chatter.....yes!
Pops and bangs from the exhaust....yes! This was mapped in by Skuzzle motorsport by the previous owner.
Plan to track it when I get the chance but enjoying the liveliness of it around the country lanes in Hampshire at the moment and it is very good fun to drive.
I should have bought one of these years ago and not now atmy age (44).

I love that stuff and with that much power I’m sure you can make the car dance around which is a lot of fun.Pops and bangs from the exhaust....yes! This was mapped in by Skuzzle motorsport by the previous owner.

Nice car mate! Will be doing pretty much the same to mine once the ever extending list of other bits and bobs to do finally gets finished
What's it like in the wet? And is the boost linear or lag, lag, boom?
The boost is not too bad, fairly linear and easy enough to drive in the wet with some care!

You can see it's linear on the graph, N/As with turbos fitted and not much else usually are.
Well not only that but its only a td04
Not to say thats a bad thing, its the perfect turbo for a car as small and light as an MX5 but Td04's aren't exactly known for monster power and tons of lag.
Boost will come on around 2-2.5k RPM and will be fairly smooth-ish with a nice lump of torque along with it. Should be fairly manageable in the wet unless you lower an mx5 drastically which brings on a ton of negative camber and twitchiness along with it.
