Brought used car but discovered fault after help!

Hi,

I recently brought a ford focus titanium a few days ago I went to view car at night (I know its not ideal but we was running very late!) now car seemed fine I looked inside and all seemed fine.
Now after once I brought it I discovered very seep scratches at the back of arm rest thing I messaged the seller and he just telling me to buy black polish but I doubt this would help cos scratches are very deep as if a cat or dog hs clawed through it out something.Is there anything I can do because I feel the price should have been lowered after seeing that the seller said "he didnt know about it".Im quite upset I paid for a car and discovering that has put me off any tips would be recommended.

Just put this one down to experience, if it was a private sale they'll just quite rightly tell you to jog on as you inspected the car before you bought it. If he genuinely didn't know about it he'l'l just think your trying it on to get some money off.

If it's a dealership you still have no chance for very similar reasons. Also,have you any way to prove that you didn't cause these scratches. The second you left the physical appearance of your car is your own problem. For all he knows you left, and sliced your armrest, before driving through a bramble bush and scratching your paint, the second it leaves he has no way of knowing what has happened to it.

how old is the vehicle ? if its some minor cosmetic damage only then you need to chalk it down to experience. Why didn't you go over the car more thoroughly if such things would cause so much annoyance ? your lack of checking is not the fault of the seller.

I brought it from private seller and I saw it straight away on the same night which i sent pictures to the guy too he just said he wasnt aware of it.Its a three year old car yes it is my fault that I didnt examine it properly.

I just want to know is it worth contacting him again and asking for a slight refund cos I feel the value of car should be less due to that cosmetic damage

Clue is in the title "used car"
ie: a previously owned and used 2nd /3rd /4th hand vehicle at a fraction of the price of a new one.
Want perfection?. Pop down to your local Ford dealer and I am sure they will be able to help you pick a brand new shiny unused Focus for a damn sight more money than you paid for this one.

I would not suggest contacting him if I was you.
You might not like the response he gives you.
That could be rectified with some fine sandpaper and a can of plastic paint to match for less than a tenner.

You bought the car. You didn't brought the car.

Anyway, it's a used car with a bit of minor cosmetic damage that was easy to spot when you were inspecting it before buying. Either live with it or pay to replace that plastic panel. It probably doesn't cost as much as you think.

if thats all thats wrong with it consider it a good lesson in looking a it harder before you buy , view the nest in good light etc

you could get a smart repair on that , or chances an ebay one or even brand new wont be stupid amounts of cash

After reading the title I thought this was going to be major engine fault or something really costly. In all my years buying private cars I always find stuff days/weeks after buying that's just part and parcel of buying private.

If it bothers you, fix or replace the part.

Leave the seller alone. Don't contact him except to apologise for being an annoyance.

As others said, if this is the biggest problem you have with the car, you are very lucky. Repair it, change it with a new or good used part and do not think about it anymore.

Check MOT (if needed)
take it on a full test drive
check the fluid's
check the tyres
check service history
inspect the paint work
check the glass for the ford stamp on all of them
what about the panel gaps
check all the electrical items function as they should
what about aircon

check, ebay plenty of arm rests for ford for sale, a few screws and you can swap it out in an hour.

OP, nothing you can do. Don’t buy cars in the dark, is all I can suggest. If it’s not repairable then you should be able to replace the armrest

next step take it to a main dealer and ask them to find problems with it and really get upset when they list 3k of unnecessary work
