Wife found and bought an interesting car

This was unexpected.
Last week my wife was dropping her daughter off for 'work experience'.
I'm always talking about replacing her Golf for something more interesting but there are only 2 cars she likes. 70s Bmw 2002 or an x1. Im not a big fan of the x1 and 2002s are now expensive. The golf she drives now was her first car and she's made it clear this will stay with us, pass on to the children etc.
So, this was sitting outside the work experience building.. she called me on the phone..'deltashad, I think I found a 4x4 Golf!'. She did, and here it is.
Everything is up for sale here but you get hit with silly prices at times.
She found out who the owner was, (another girl, which helps), negotiated a very good price and now the car is hers. I like unusual cars and feel good about this, I'd rather have a gti 16v in oak green but this is just fine. It could be a keeper.
It's a 1.8 petrol, I believe they had a little bit more power than the standard cars at 98bhp. It's totally as it left the factory. There's a small engine fault but the syncro is good and a few small spots of rust but solid. First stop is the mechanics shop to fix the engine (the owner provided the part we need) it will be serviced fully, then off to the paint shop to be made like new.

I think they were only built for the European LHD market. I dont know that much about the car, I've looked into it but the details are sparce.
They built around 7750 syncros and 3300 of them were these softroad Country models. Theres no aircon and pretty sure the windows are manual.
We collect it tomorrow so will follow up with more photos and a write up.
It may be quite nippy, a friends parents had a basic mk2 syncro, which back in 1991 seemed fast. Looks a bit top heavy so may have to take corners with caution.
There's one for sale with a G60 engine at 4000euros. Prices for these things are strange, one in the US for 50k usd, our cost 2000 euros. It can only appreciate in value.

They built around 7750 syncros and 3300 of them were these softroad Country models. Theres no aircon and pretty sure the windows are manual.

It's in really good shape. There are a few issues here and there but it's solid and the syncro is fine.
This is the road to my parents in laws farm, the reason my wife wanted a 4x4. As you can see we have to dump the Lotus and walk. Her present Golf grounds out on the way up.
I found a bit of history on the car. They were built in the Steyr-Daimler-Puch factory. This was responsible for the brilliant Puch BMXs of the 80s and Mercedes G-wagons.
7700 were built but many haven't survived.
The car bought has been to Mars and back twice although the condition doesn't show it. After the mechanic has finished with it the garage restoring our Lancia will give it a total valet inside and out so we know exactly what we need to do.
The standard spec is Golf GTI interior. 0-60 is not going to break any records as it's very heavy and not exactly aerodynamic. It comes in at 12.3 seconds. We have all the parts to fix it plus more and some documents of the Country. The previous owners we a very nice couple, a German guy and Romanian wife, quite a coincidence as my wife is also Romanian. Anyhow here's more pics of the strange beast.

Thanks, I've always been intrigued by these but this is the first time I got to see one up close.I'm not sure about how it will be modified. If the engine is strong enough we won't change it out, if it's a bit lethargic then something VAG with a bit more power will be dropped in.

Electric front windows
Xenon headlamps
Bluetooth hands free stereo with upgraded speaker system.
I quite like the wheels but always fancied Ronal turbos, this may be my chance to to get a set but not sure if they will suit the style of the Country.
