My new MGB GT project

After a short break without a 'classic' in the garage, I've given in to my urges and bought a fresh project. It's a 1973 MGB GT in 'black tulip' and is remarkably un-molested, proper Rostyle wheels, 4 speed with overdrive and the rare and unobtainable Ochre coloured interior. It has all the usual MGB rust in all the usual places but it runs and everything works, cheap enough and may be the ideal project on which to learn to weld

Another ebay purchase and used 'Shipley' to bring it to Newcastle from Wolverhampton, all of which went very smoothly indeed.

Looks a good base. Fantastic colour, when I was growing up my father had an Austin Maxi in black tulip, IIRC it had a purple interior.

It seems good to have everything present and working before you start. They're good strong cars and not expensive to run or difficult to maintain. The GT is many ways is superior in terms of utility. But the purple colour must be the least attractive BMC hue ever! All highly subjective of course. Good luck.

Just stumbled across this old post (looking for a usable photo). I had an identical Black Tulip BGT, registration KNG444L - almost identical! No doubt originally sold by the same dealer and in quick succession with your car.

Sadly, after a couple of years ownership, I was hit from behind by a young lad in a pizza delivery van. Although the Corsa van looked WAY more damaged - the MG only showing a broken rear light - the insurance inspector determined that the floor was bent and the car was beyond repair. That was in 1999.

Naah - I offer you my Orange one and I once had a Pooh brownie yellow one!

Styling wise, the chrome bumper MGB GT and the MGB Roadster have always made me think of a scaled down "poor man's" Ferrari 250 GT and convertible, which personally, I don't see as a bad thing (the rubber bumper cars just look awful)

They could possibly do with a bit more power, but from a purely styling point of view, they're as good looking as the 1960's Ferrari's (to me at least )

Nice to see this thread getting some love, something which has been sadly lacking towards the BGT.

I've still got it, it’s partially welded with new boot floor, rear bulkhead, rear inner wings and it’s been ready for new floor pans for a few years now, but sadly other things have got in the way… but one day it will be purple again

Had an aconite 1974 V8, which had one or two places that were harder to work on than a standard b - heater valve being one of them... Very easy cars to work on, and fun to drive.

I still have a thought about buying one and restomodding it, probably a roadster, but I'd need another garage!

That black tulip looks a bit light are you sure it's not aconite?

I had a midget in black tulip which was a lot darker than that - aconite tended to be more purple which this looks like

The MGB GT is a good looking car and this is a lovely colour.

I had one in Harvest Gold - not the best colour but restored it and painted it Primrose Yellow. 40+ years ago …

It was 12 years old when I bought it and rotten as a peach. Paid £700 from memory. I didn’t care, I just wanted a soft top car. Drove it in the winter with just the tonneau on it - like an idiot.

They’re great cars to run and own. I’d have another. The V8s are pricey now but the standard B and BGT are pretty cheap.

I hated the rubber bumper ones - we lived in Abingdon back then and I used to see them all lined up on the local industrial estate ready to be shipped off to the US with their thin whitewall tyres. But nowadays I quite like the rubber bumper ones.
