Bangernomics Mondeo 2.2 TDCi Zetec Estate

Searching through ebay and Autotrader adds i decided what I wanted was a cheap banger estate so that I can use it and abuse it for a year while i finally sort our back garden out after being here for 20 years.

Although my Mini is technically an estate being a clubman sticking 300kgs of cement and sand in the back are not ideal and with a banger i don't have to worry about cleaning it. So narrowly missing out on a 1.8 mondeo estate another popped up on Autotrader last night.

As a diesel hater the one thing i wanted to avoid was diesel and something with a DPF, as luck would have it this is both powered by the devils fuel and has a DPF .... bugger !

So after placing a £250 deposit on a £750 car and not having seen it saturday will prove to be D day. Positives are its a Ford dealer, it has 12 months mot and the only advisories are front brake discs, 1 tyre and an oil leak. But given its 144000 miles an oil leak is to be expected.

Saturday is D day when it will be collected then it will be put straight into action seeing how much crap i can get in it.

Pictures will follow shortly, oh and as an added bonus it has a sunroof and a towbar, which means i can finally get the bikes out and lose some weight while biking around rutland water.

I’ve got the ST estate, bought it for peanuts last year, with the intention of flipping it on for some beer money - I still have it!

Clutch/flywheel cost can write these off, I picked up a 2000 miles used c&f for £90, so got lucky

Will this have self levelling rear shock absorbers? I know mine [i]did[i] but they’re £150ish each to replace, so now has standard ones!

They’re good engines, lots of torque, but don’t use supermarket fuel as it eventually kills the injection pump

Finally, I don’t think they have a DPF? I know my 56 plate definitely doesn’t

According to the local dealer it does have a DPF, we think it might be one of the first to have one fitted

I'll check on the shocks when i collect it, hopefully its had a clutch and DMF at some point, it appears to have twin electrics so i'm assuming its pulled a fibre glass shed at some point. All will be revealed on saturday .... but if there is knocking or vibration through the pedal i'll possibly walk. Given its a Ford dealer selling the car i would kind of hope they have done a little bit of homework and have a bit of confidence in a £750 car.

Looks a nice car. I didn't think DPFs came in on most cars til about 2008/9, though I know some Vauxhall's had them in 2002.

Quick way to check have a look but I don't think there is a DPF either.

Great shed that, parts will be peanuts (apart from a big dmf bill obviously).

So its home, it does have some parking dings and a couple of deep scratches the wheels are manky.

The tyres are legal but a couple of different brands are more worryingly they are landsails. It chips are squeels on start up and needs a bit of a tidy up. It looks like the dealer has fitted new discs and pads on the front and while i should be greatful they are APEC parts of which i'm not a fan.

It drives reasonably well but the trip home made me realise why i don't like diesels, it also shows the steering wheel is offset the aux belt and tensioner needs replacing and something odd is happening at the rear, its either the miss match of tyres, a shock absorber or suspension bush.

Tomorrow will see it put into action and filled up with crap and taken to the tip.

Tonight after watching the FA cup final i got itchy feet, its grimy inside and while i can live with dirty seats and carpets i'm not so keen on someone else's dirt.

I do need to sort the vibrating and rattling sorted when it ticks over, Its driving me nuts after 2 days.

This weekend sees me armed with 2 rear drop links and some carb cleaner, if it stays dry the EGR is in for a clean and i'll replace both rear drop links as one of them feels like its knocking

Vibrating/rattling will likely be the crank pulley and tensioner kit.
£100 or so for parts and an hour or two labour.
Bit of a pig of a job but makes the world of difference...until it fails again about 10-14k later as they all do.

Literally just bought an St170 that was even worse inside, enjoyed a week of cleaning the interior up on that. Always like these Mondeos

Having access to ramps and cheap labour will make the job easier, i'll be changing the alternator pully too. INA do a clutch pulley for the TDCi which helps. It looks like you can change just the spring on the tensioner too so that will save a bit of money.
