Prompted by the onset of the clonk of doom from the drivetrain on the family knock-about 2006 vintage XC90 and the realisation that, across five cars in the family, not one is ULEZ compliant, I today bit the bullet and bought a 2015, new shape XC90.

It's just the standard spec model but I'm appalled to say that I really like it. I have got genuinely no idea how they get so much performance out of a two litre, 4 cylinder diesel.

I like these a lot but find the idea of having a 4-cylinder engine in a luxury car off putting. What’s it like to drive? And what do you make of the touch screen system?

The drive is very car like. The touch screen is taking a bit of getting used to!

They are okay to drive...
my sister has the Hybrid version (0-60 in 5.5) - feels very lively.

there are some weird things about them though, as passenger while my BIL was driving, I was prohibited from reading the car manual on the screen (safety reasons!), however, I could use the same screen to make changes to the suspension / steering while he was driving biggrin

generally I like them, however I would still go disco / RR instead, the xc90 feels quite bland

Was surprised they changed the 'image' of the xc90. Whilst Im sure a better car everywhere else, the exterior styling is a shame. The old one was lovely and functional looking, the new one is a generic aggressive faced city suv.

MD has just bought a T8 with all the goodies. Also had to have it Polestar'd from new. Weirdly always was a BMW fanboi , but had to admit it he prefers the Volvo over his X50M he gave back. Very nice place to sit and although a bit harsh sounding when given some beans , is a techie nerds heaven with the dash displays and stuff.

We have a 2017 T6 petrol. Its a great car in so many ways..super to be in...sùper comfy, amazing ride and low road noise on air suspension etc etc. I love the screen too. it takes a day to get used to.

The car would be a perfect 10 if it had a six cylinder engine. The engine is super and turbo charged and has lots of oomph..but you end up having to make excuses for the noise it makes. So it goes to an 8 out of 10 car.

I suspect that Volvo will use the hybrid system and other acoustic electronics to eventually get rid of the low down grumble issue.

I thought the same thing about the V90 T6 I tried. Loads of power but the engine refinement really jarred. Shame they couldn't reuse the turbocharged six from the last generation cars, although apparently the space saved by using only four cylinder engines was a factor in allowing proper double wishbone front suspension rather than struts.

Are these OK to own from a reliability, dealers, etc point-of-view?

One became available in our family due to a bereavement and I hummed and hawed about putting my hand up and saying I wanted it but in the end didn't. I've formed the impression that the newer Volvos are a bit fragile, but I don't know where that's come from.

Lovely cars.

What was the clunk of doom from the drivetrain? Mine has one when you engage the clutch sometimes. 2006 s60 d5...

I can't recall seeing one locally (West Cheshire) although X60's are legion. Mercedes GL seems to be the yummy mummy's 7 seater SUV of choice here.

The new one doesn't have quite the same visual appeal as the older ones to me but Volvo have made a masterstroke with the S90. That thing is an amazing looking car. So clearly, they haven't lost their touch. I would expect the XC90 to continue to be a class leader in the sub-Range Rover segment though.

Went looking at these with my dad. He was after a 4x4 and we looked at all the major ones.

He settled on an F-Pace but I was most impressed by the XC90. It's got major presence (it's fecking huge) and the interior is wonderful. I really like current Volvo styling.

Pics please.
