I had never really thought about owning a Golf R32 it just kind of happened.
The car belonged to a friend’s Dad who sadly passed away at the beginning of the year and the car remained on his drive untouched. I had made it clear that I was a petrol head and might be interested but nothing else was said.
That was until the beginning of May when he turned up with it on the drive. It was my first time near a R32 and despite 7 months worth of dirt and algae I was impressed. It didn't make any nasty noises, was a DSG with a sunroof and TBH I was smitten.
By the end of the next day a deal was done and it was mine, I had brought it 'AS IS'.
Looking through the history the car had been well looked after with the diff and DSG services carried out correctly. Even though it had a dead battery I had a good feeling about the car and the week after it was collected by a local garage.
The car was booked in for a MOT, oil and filter service and full Haldex ad DSG service. I also brought 4 new tyres and the wheels were refurbished.
Work commitments and the garage being short staffed meant I didn’t get it back for three weeks. Apart from a near rear wiper motor it sailed through the MOT so now I could set about giving it a good clean up.
Since then it has also had some suspension work and I have changed the plugs and air filter but so far so good.
So what is it like to drive?
I have had a lot of cars and some with some amazing engines (E39 M5, TVR Chimaera, RX8, 968CS) and there is no doubt that the V6 is a peach with loads of torque. Sound is an interesting subject. My M5 had the back boxes removed and the Chimaera was fully decatted and straight through so the obvious route was to get a Milltek or similar but Im not so sure. I love the way it sounds with the stock system but that might change.
Coming from a Leon Cupra 290 it feels slow and yes it could do with another 100bhp but for me that’s not the point. The car has character, brings a smile to my face and being the first 4WD car I have driven I am slowly learning how to get the best of it in the bends. Its also very comfy and I can get the kids in the back.
Overall I have spent £4500 (inc purchase price) on the car. Its far from perfect (quite a few scratches, couple of rust bubbles) but mechanically it is sound and not being a garage queen means I don’t have to worry about it too much. I Use it a few times a week so can put up with the 24mpg average. Values are all over the place for these at the moment (the tax doesn't help) but I promised I would hang onto it so that doesn't matter because I bought the car to enjoy it.
