My Mk5 Golf GTI - take two

This is my second MK5 this year, having sold one to upgrade to a MK7 GTI. That had to go as I'm in the process of moving house and needed to free up some cash.

I didn't have much to spend and £3K was my maximum that I allowed myself. I saw a couple of dogs, for over my budget and I just couldn't justify them so I found this on Gumtree for £1995. I got a couple of hundred knocked off and went to Pontefract to pick it up.

When I got there the owner claimed that he filled it with oil and spilled some, which was the reason for the lumpy idle. I knew this was BS but it ran so I drove it away; I was paying dog money so it was no surprise it was a dog (he did machine polish it though!)

It's done 158K and there was some history and it appeared to have had a bit of money spent on it despite the rough idle. I've already replaced the spark plugs and coil packs and the problem still happens so I've managed to get some injectors from eBay for £35 delivered. I'm going to get my mechanic to fit them when he's replacing the timing belt and water pump.

I've also ordered new headlights (£105), a PCV valve (£18) diverter valve (£30) and purge valve (£12).

The interior is filthy so I'm planning on a deep clean. I had to get some baby wipes from the service station on the way back to Newcastle because the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake handle were sticky and full of dead skin. Rank.

Bought one myself recently, great cars. Wouldn’t mind a Mk7 though. How do they compare OP?

Driving wise they're much the same.

The build quality on the MK5 is better than the MK7, as is the quality of the interior plastics. I didn't really like the MK7 in all honesty

Had some GTechniq trim restorer left over and managed to rejuvenate the grille.

I've ordered some more to do the rest of the trim

Nice car at a very good price. I had an Edition 30 in same colour (My second mk5 GTI) but sadly it got written off a few weeks ago by a drunk driver who also scarpered. I am now looking at replacing it with a MK7 GTI. How do they compare with the mk5? I hope it proves to be a good buy.

Thanks that's useful to know. I'd heard that the mk6 were not as good as the mk5. Time for something methinks.

You heard wrong. the Mk6 is pretty much a facelift version of the mk5. very similar interior with a bit more power. Not worth twice the price but still a slightly better car. Mk7 is a cut above, great car.

Owned an MK5 GTI and tried out an MK7. I'm sure the MK7 is better in every quantifiable way, but it just wasn't as fun as my mapped MK5 and didn't feel as special. Still, not bad and as it is newer it would probably be a bit more reliable.

Some great news tonight, I fitted the £16.66 PCV valve and it's fixed the rough idle problem; so it wasn't the injectors as feared!

The headlights took waaaay longer than I'd expected, even after watching videos on YouTube of how to do it. Some of the screws were nigh on impossible to access and I lost three in the engine bay somewhere!

Looks good, we ran a 3 door black GTI, it's a great all rounder.

My lad is nearly out of a pushchair so may sell our Mazda 6 Sport and be heading back to a Mk5.

Great work on the lights. I do wonder how people’s lights get so bad. I’ve not experienced it on either of my mk5 golfs
