2016 Porsche Panamera 4S V8... Oil Burner!
Discussion
The time has come to change my C63 ( https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... )
In short, I loved that car. Nothing on the road in my opinion short of a proper super car will match the drama and anti social-ness of that 6.2 M156 V8. Its a true Concorde moment and one I had to experience before they fall into the wrong hands, and I always feared when I got bored (if) what i'd actually be driving after it.
I was running the C63 alongside an e60 530d M Sport for work duties. .This seemed to work well for 18 months, but then It suddenly dawned on me that two lots of tax, tyres, insurance, fuel, along with slowly mounting bills to keep the 530d in good shape being 12 years old and with 140k miles started to ring alarm bells with me to re consider my options as the scenario probably wasn't really saving me any money at all. Basically I wanted to consolidate the performance and toys of the more modern c63, but still have the economy and reasonably sensible running costs of a diesel to do my 13-15k miles a year in. A tall order to fulfil if I wanted to be different and not have a 335d!
I have been looking for a few months, all kinds of bizarre options popped into my head. .I even test drove a G350d and although I felt like Arnie driving it, it was not an economical car, nor did it drive well.
So then I started looking at Panamera's. I always have loved these - even the gen1 shape, which was a bit subjective in the looks department, but I simply haven't read a bad review of how they drove. I then realised I could get a generation 2 within my budget (and side by side they are absolutely worlds apart in the looks department inside and out alone!) so the hunt began.
I found this 66 reg Panamera 4s Diesel on the used approved Porsche locator. I left a deposit blind - Porsche only made these for 12 months before pulling the plug on the engine and most of their diesel range (diesel gate and demand?) which means finding a car that's the right spec let alone one to test drive was a mare. I test drove a petrol 4s (2.9 v6 tt) just to get a feel of the car and its size though.
Some headline figures:
4.0 Twin turbo V8 diesel
420bhp
630lb ft of torque
0-60 in 4.3 seconds (with sports chrono pack)
42mpg
all in a car that weighs 2 tonnes!
And pics from collection day at my local OPC (I will follow with in interior pics, I completely forgot!)

The cars are decently spec'd as standard, This was a Porsche Launch car so it does come with £25k worth of options that include:
-Volcano Grey metallic
-21'' Sport Design wheels in high power silver
-Adaptive air suspension (PASM)
-Heated seats front and rear
-Massage and ventilated front seats
-14 way front seats with memory function
-Bose Surround Sound
-Rear axle steer
-Night Assist
-Comfort access
-Park Assist inc Surround view
-Four zone climate control
-Lane keep assist inc. Speed limiter indicator
-LED main headlights with matrix beam inc list system plus
-Power steering plus
-Privacy glass
-Sport chrono package
-Steering wheel heating
-USB Interface in rear
-Wheel centres with full colour Porsche Crest
-Ioniser
-Side window trims in black
-Soft close doors
-Tow bar preparation
The car is currently on 9k miles. As part of the deal I had the wheels done in gloss black with a diamond cut lip to tie in with the black trim around the car.
I picked the car up 3 days ago so its still a case of getting my head around the mind boggling amount of tech and wizardry, but first impressions are this car is just immense. Apart from that 6.2 in the c63, which was clearly the centrepiece of ownership, this is a completely better car in every aspect. The launch control is brutal, and it accelerates and handles like no 2 tonne, 5 meter long, 2 meter car wide should and it has indicated a solid 40mpg in the 300 miles I've driven so far- its astounding infact. A full tank (90litres) shows an 820 mile range! and as a side note, its the worlds fastest diesel production car - get me.
Thanks and il keep this updated as and when.

That looks good, not a massive fan normally but the colour / spec make it work rather well. Are you enjoying it? I'd be tempted to take it on a really long run, I expect it excels at that as well as providing enough "sportiness" for a bit of fun too.
That engine is frankly bonkers!
Only one thing, I don't know how you can calculate that the depreciation alone on this will be any less expensive than running two cars! I run three V8V / LR Freelander and a Cooper S and I know the costs of that will be cheaper than chopping them all in for example one of these!

I will be the first to admit that I've always dismissed the Panamera, to me it just doesn't look proportionally correct. But my good god, one cannot ignore the performance figures. Holy hell!! For a 2 tonne barge it really shifts, cripes.
Excellent car OP. I'm sure the big wigs at Shell will be missing you running a C63

Certainly subjective but as bias as I sound, pictures don't do this car any justice. Its just one of those cars that look so much better in the flesh - it also has huge road presence. Longest I travelled was about 2 hours yesterday and it just ate the miles on the duals with no drama at all - was actually very enjoyable to throw around the twisties in Brecon as the over taking capabilities are laugh out loud good. That engine is frankly bonkers!

as far as depreciation goes its a fair point and I haven't done the exercise (foolishly) but never the less the actual hassle and space of two cars was enough to just go back to one car to be honest. Residuals on these are pretty solid though.

Special finish alloys and you blacked them?!?
Apart from that, on paper I imagine that's ace.
Question is, is it ace, or is it ace for a "5m long 2 ton car"?
Never knew silver was a special finish? You can spec these wheels from the factory in gloss black (at a cost) or silver at no cost. It really is ace regardless of size - not many cars would keep up with it, wet or dry, straight or bends and deliver the same economy and comfort in the process!Apart from that, on paper I imagine that's ace.

Thanks - I think you right on your views with regards to the gen 1 Panamera, but this new shape car is so much more proportioned especially that rear end. Defo a subjective car overall though which I appreciate! Shell certainly will miss me but I will NOT miss them lol.Excellent car OP. I'm sure the big wigs at Shell will be missing you running a C63

That's the same OPC as i use..I bought a new Panamera Sport Turismo Hybrid last December and think its a truly amazing drive..It shrinks around you when you drive and the new Gen air suspension has the ability to defy the laws of physics..
Good old Cardiff. Good to deal with, not great, but good - we did clash at some points but all in all I'm glad i was able to buy the car locally (The car was actually found from a London OPC but they brought it down for me) .Cracking choice - i bet that is an absolute animal! Agreed on it shrinking around you, I'm still astounded how quickly you forget the size of the car from behind the wheel. Then you park it and get out and realise your looking at the Titanic with a Porsche badge stuck on the front! That's stunning!
I'm not a Porker fan generally; but these Panamera's are the ones I really like and would certainly own one..
I've been out in a few, my Dad's ex colleague has had a few, but all petrol and they went like shiny sh** off a shovel; so god knows what a big diesel V8 will be like...

Loving it so far. First niggle I've noted is that the DAB dropped out all the way home from work last night, but then came back on later in the evening on the way to the gym.. perhaps something to keep an eye on if the infotainment needs a software update perhaps.
Launch control is addictive, for such a tank it has no right to be as quick off the mark as it is. I think this would pip the C63 up to 100, then that 6.2 will get into its stride and probably out do the Porsche at naughty speeds. I have found RaceChip custom tuning boxes for the car that take it to 505bhp and 750lb ft of torque, and the 0-60 down to 3.6 seconds - food for thought if I ever get bored of this for the sake of just under £600!
Still my fave angle of the car:

I think the car looks its best in the lowest ride height with the spoiler out ( I sound about 14 saying that!). I do think those wheels need some spacers though as in its lowest setting they tuck into the arches a bit which bugs me. Callipers will also be professionally painted as they were on the C63 as I find this off silver colour dreary to look at.
Will probably look at getting at least the front bumper PPF'd as its quite blunt and I fear would happily pick up stone chips! Any recommendations?

I think I read on one of the other Porsche threads that the DAB booster was being disabled on new cars and was going to be subject to a recall. Not sure if it's related to your model but might be work checking.Loving it so far.
