Sadly it looks like my trusty old Fiesta will have to be retired at 172000 miles, it went in for a service the other day and turns out there's a number of jobs that will need doing to get it through its MOT this month, the age and value of the car means it probably won't be worth repairing.

Looking at your 'garage', it looks like you've driven all but 30 of those miles. I get bored of cars way before 12 years and 172k miles comes around. Good going!

Yes, for £9k you certainly got your money's worth!

My parents bought a brand new run out one of these on an 07 plate and I think paid £8,800 for it. They still have it, and I think it is on around 80k miles but it is currently sitting on their drive waiting for my father to fix it.

Last time I borrowed it, it decided to dump all it's coolant on the M25 and I had to get towed home. Looks like the plastic thermostat housing is cracked as the coolant pours out the bottom of the engine. Other than this (admittedly quite severe) issue it has been 100%

Yeah it's done well, it doesn't owe me anything. Be sad to see it go though, it's funny how attached you can get to cars

I wouldn't have the kinda...patience? No, thats the wrong word....but i couldn't stay with the same car for that length of time. Far too many cars out there to try.

It's predecessor was a Mk3 Fiesta that I inherited off my gran, she bought it new and that car lasted 12 years too, though with only 74k miles

What were the big jobs on that list? Pretty unusual for one owner to see out the life of a car from brand new to the scrapyard.

At least two wheel bearings, a problem with the power steering, new tyre, handbrake travel and I'm sure there was something else but can't remember what at the moment and that's if they don't find anything else wrong. Any single one of them wouldn't write the car off but it's the fact it's all falling at once and my instinct is saying it's the thin end of the wedge.

Just remembered, coolant leak was the other fault, though it's not a major leak and could probably be left for a bit as long as I keep an eye on the levels. It did a 350 mile round trip to Northumberland about 10 days ago and the level hasn't dropped a lot.

All of those are probably fixable on your driveway, if you're mechanically minded. Your local garage could help with the harder bits.

Agreed. It's understandable if you fancy a change, but well worth getting those bits done if you don't!

Even if he did have the skills, would it really be worth putting that much effort into a 172k/2006 Fiesta? Unless there is some major sentimental attachment I’d be replacing it...

As I say I get the feeling this is the thin end of the wedge, it's borderline as it stands and if they found anything else it would tip the balance.

What about seeing if a keen PH’er will take it off your hands to fix it up?

All of those issues you stated above are easily fixable in a weekend. Heck if you was in my side of the pond, I would happily do it for you! I vote to keep the car going and give it a new lease of life.

If I had the facilities and the time to do the jobs myself that they have highlighted I would maybe try to keep it on the road a bit longer, as I say though it's if anything else is found that needs doing.

As an update, it's being traded in, I'm picking its replacement up Wednesday, a 2007 Focus Estate. I'll do a full report on the new car on Wednesday.
