High mileage shed Volvo

Greetings all from Ireland.
I’m new to the forum and have been reading for a while, some of the threads are just fantastic.
I said I’d do a thread on a car I picked up in August this year, wasn’t really sure what the plan was for it but I have grown quite fond of it!
My fleet at the moment consists mainly of Alfa Romeos, I have the following:
2001 156 3.0 V6
2005 166 2.5 V6
2001 GTV Twinspark
The above cars aren’t used as daily drivers and I generally try and keep one of them on the road at all times, but I do need a daily driver.
So a bit of backstory on the Volvo per the thread title! In August this year I was at my local Alfa specialist, and I had some bulky parts to collect that were about 30 miles away.
He kindly offered to lend me a Volvo V70 he had lying at the back of his yard and, as it had loads of space in it, I was happy out.
The car itself was a 2002 Volvo V70 D5 manual which he picked up off a friend in the trade. It had 258k miles, 9 months MOT and seemed generally rough cosmetically - seemed to drive ok though.
By the time I got back from collecting the parts I was sold on it, it was brilliant! Great engine, great seats, loads of room inside great stereo and so on.
He said he had given just €100 for it, and that I could buy it off him for €99 (always wanted to get a running driving car for less than €100!)
The car had a slight fuel leak and the front wishbones needed changing so we organized for him to do those jobs along with an oil and filter change and she was ready for the road (along with some cleaning inside and out!)
Last week she got another oil change at 265k miles and continues to lap up the miles, as I said I’m quite fond of it even though it’s quite beige!
Will hopefully keep the thread updated and try make it to 300k miles! The below photo is after a good clean and even a coat of wax!

These really are a great old bus. I bought a 2004 D5 with 208k miles earlier this year. Now on about 218k miles and apart from a service and a new brake caliper it's needed nothing. As I'm working away it's been w
ed out to my Dad and son for general duties and just keeps plodding on. Like yourself I'm really rather fond of it..!!

A bargain indeed! Worth more in scrap metal. Should see 300k easily. A mate of mine at work has just bought one with similar space shuttle mileage - he clearly got ripped off, he paid £300 for his. He loves it - and I can hardly say he's not a petrolhead as he has the choice of a Lambo and a 911 as alternatives. He's replaced a CV joint and cleaned it, other than that, its needed nothing at all.

- rear drivers door has a considerable scrape/dent on it which I will see to
- injectors are bit ticky and economy isn’t what it should be but after 266k miles it’s to be expected.
I forgot to mention I put 4 x new Kumho on it, simply because I won’t drive a car on bad tyres!
All in all it’s pretty decent really for €100 and I expect it to pass its next MOT in March 2019.
All cars cost maintenance and that’s how I look at it.

Just to add, my mates one was bought as a part of a charity "drive £500 a car to Italy and see if it makes it" jaunt. He bought the Ovlov for £300, spent a few quid on oil and filters, then set off in it, assuming it would be abandoned wherever it broke down.
It made it to Italy just fine, he spent a week driving around Italy in it, and then brought it home. As he said, he had been on an Italian tour for less than the price of a pair of tyres for his Lambo, including purchase of the car, and fuel. He's utterly converted to shedding as a daily.

Must be something in the water, I’ve just bought a 210k D5 manual. Got it for £1150 which appears a rip off compared to the others on here, but it has had pretty much every major/expensive consumable replaced in the last 18 months or so.
It needs the alignment doing, new mirror glass on the passenger side, a new rear wiper arm and a precautionary oil change, but apart from that it’s absolutely perfect mechanically (cosmetically it’s a different story...).
I’ll probably do my own thread when I can be bothered to take some more pics, to avoid hijacking this one.

Definitely must be something in the air! In Ireland we pay extortionate levels of motor tax so that really drives the value of these old cars down.
My Volvo is €1080 per year....every year! But I have always liked the older cars so just accept that the lower purchase price offsets this!
