Behold one free VW Golf 1.9tdi!
Brother in law has given the wife his ex-daily driver 1.9tdi, which to be fair isn't worth a deal but it's a reliable runner in theory. Just add tax and insurance he said lol. Turns out it's been stood 4 months and he wanted it gone . Took best part of an hour to coax life into the battery with jump leads from my car. 2 tyres had to be pumped up from flat. The front windows don't work (cables gone apparently) and the heater matrix has a weep. I've got the battery off for now and on a proper charger to see if it can be relied upon but not hopeful.

Plus points- it's tidy enough. It's got a 300 quid head unit which he wants back when we are done . Its mot ready till April and it's averaging about 55mpg or more he says. The wife would only use it one day a week anyway.

First VW and first golf I think in a long line of previous and proper shedding if it lasts a year or two before it goes to the scrapper if any big faults come up.

Wife gave him a bottle of proseco she had anyway and everyone was a lil bit happier with their day :-)

It might be the world's shortest thread if it drives like a bag of nails when I fit the battery
:-)
I've a friend already trying to poach the rims n tyres if it breaks and another pal who is a scrap dealer offering me £120 lol.
Hopefully it was fine 4 months ago and has done 160oddk miles already, it's not visibly Smokey or rattling so fingers crossed!

Another free Mk4 Golf! These really are the best bargains to be had now biggrin

What's the front wings like? Just replaced both on mine as they had a case of serious rot which is so common on these.

Big job to do regulators?
Wings appear solid, slight bit at bottom of one.
Battery appears to have held a charge and it started first go. Well see how she drives at the weekend.

They can be a bit of a pain sometimes but more time consuming. Where a normal car has a plastic membrane behind the door card these are one big metal panel with everything attached to it. Once the door card is removed you will see 2 big black rubber circles, pop these open and then lower the window until you can see the clamps, undo the 10mm bolts and lift the window out the top. Remove all the 10mm bolts around the edge of the panel and disconnect everything, bit of wiggling should see it out. You can buy the complete panel from VW but they are expensive, not sure if they still do them but you used to be able to buy a repair kit from euro car parts for about £20. Stripping the old ones off will be easy if they are knackered the new ones are just tight to go in so probably easier with 2 pairs of hands as you have to locate them in the motor and compress all the springs to give you enough slack to go round the rollers at the end of each runner.

Great memories of these, we’ve had a 130 in the family from brand new in 2002. Feels plenty pokey enough but we’re nursing it along now with a clutch/flywheel on its way out at 130k odd.

Both front window regs failed with the glass dropping into the door and all 4 door locks died and have since been replaced, but otherwise the old girl soldiers on. From memory the metal window reg panels have nasty sharp edge so watch your hands/wear gloves!

Legend has it that VW poached a purchasing guy from GM (Vauxhall/Opel) who resourced such things as door looks and window regulators to a cheaper alternative and thats why they have such a short lifespan. Apart from these and a tendency to chomp through EGR valves, these old mk4's do seem pretty hardy. Can't go wrong for that money either!

I do like a Mk4! Apart from the issues mentioned above, these things tend to soldier on forever - 160k is nothing.
Could quite happily do double that with some TLC!

There are so many mk4s still on the road, so they must be fairly robust given they are all around 15-20 years old! Numbers will probably start to thin soon now that many are knackered and not worth much.

Which bhp version is it? The later pd130 was a great engine.

Do Mk4s encourage owners to give them away? My partner's friend has just acquired one from her mother for the princely sum of £1. It's got 57K on the odometer and a FSH... it's bodywork is tatty-ish, but it drives perfectly well.

the spending has started.... £6 for a rear wiper blade and £230 insurance for me n the wife.
It actually drives well but there's a noise from the front suspension sounding like a broken spring or strut.
And it's continually misted up internally of a morning, suspect the heater matrix.

Quite nippy with great midrange torque and quite comfy as a drive.

Plan is run it till mot April time and see if it will live another year. 60 quid on a valet booked this weekend as it's filthy inside.

Try replacing the pollen filter, my A3 was doing this and was a cheap fix.

I'll look at that pollen filter cheers. 60 quid valet inside and out looks pretty tidy now.

When checking the pollen filter look at where the scuttle meets the windscreen. It clicks in to a retainer along the bottom of the glass and can either pop out or break allowing water to run straight down the windscreen and in through the pollen filter.

I've had three free cars. None of them were as cheap to run as the ones I paid for.

This thread has great potential smile
