Shed Motoring - Toyota Corolla

My dream for many years has been to own a Shelby Mustang at some point. Now that the 60s versions are six figures, I will have to make do with a modern version, specifically a 2011 or 2012 one. To achieve this I have had to sell my 2008 Mustang Bullitt and today I said goodbye to my Focus ST estate. This means I need to do some shed motoring to make the sums work. So my daily will be the world's most boring car, a Corolla.

The one I have bought is a 2006 1.6 SR model with 106,000 miles so being a Corolla, it is just run in! It's in fairly decent nick, with a good spec for 2006. The price for all this? £700. I'm hoping it won't cost much to run as I'm going to miss the ST, particularly the heated seats at this time of year.

I only started driving it yesterday but initial thoughts are I'm going to miss my ST! It actually drives OK, it's very comfortable but I can see why Corolla's have a reputation as an old man's car though.

It was quite liberating parking in town and not having to worry about it!

The worlds best selling car of all time, which says a lot about the worlds interest in driving. Still, should be reliable and cheap to run and erm, that's about all it's got going for it. Here's hoping you reach your dream soon!

Had one as a first car, quite happy to rev (you have to, really), and I found handling to be pretty reasonable. It's a low power fwd hatchback at the end of the day so won't be the last word in excitement but the steering is weighted nicely, gives reasonable feedback and it's pretty fun to razz around a few twisty B roads.

I have really weird interest in buying a new/newish Toyota and seeing if me or the car will die first! I’m convinced a petrol Avensis with top notch maintenance is a 20 year / 300k mile car!

Bit of an update. I've been driving the Corolla for just over 1 week and all is good. Its averaging 35mpg, which is only 5mpg better than the ST but not bad for a 13 year old 1.6 petrol I suppose. I'm certainly missing some modern luxuries like a USB port and the lovely heated Recaro's, but I have to keep telling myself why I'm doing it! If it proves to be as reliable as I hope, I can see myself keeping it for a good few years.

My whole family has always had Toyota, and my sister ran one of these for many years before a growing family meant they upgraded to an avensis. It only ever needed servicing and tyres in their ownership.

I don’t think the looks are too bad, especially in SR or t sport spec, but I really really dislike the interiors of them. Very Japanese, perhaps unsurprisingly...
