Work colleague mentioned they had a old Suzuki as part of a relative's estate that needed a new home, after a bit of thought I decided to give it a go.
Single owner garage kept car with 80k on the clock.
Never failed a not for much more than a ball joint or tyre.
Had a quick look one evening to see what might need doing to get it back on the road.
It sat with no mot for the last 6 months and although it fired up it was quite spluttery and it's idle was very high.
Alarmingly brakes didn't seem to do a lot either.
Definitely would not go straight through.
So I amassed a little stock pile of treats for it.
New Brembo Discs.
Pads
Tiny oil filter.
Plugs
Air filter
And some Castrol GTX I had been hoarding in the garage for ten years.
Also picked up a second hand throttle body complete with idle control valve.
Just under £100 for that little lot.
Discs and pads flew on with no particular stubborn bolts.
For a near 20 year old car it's remarkably clean.
Next throttle body was swapped which was simple apart from losing some coolant, the little 1.3 m13a engine us a doddle for access.
Plugs next, and erm yeah think this was why it wasn't particularly happy. Original no doubt.
Sad as the replacement denso plugs were a a whopping 2 quid or so each.
The oil filter looked pretty old and the oil was black so dropped that and topped up the lost coolant.
Fired up but fine but idled high but this cleared on next start up and hasn't returned. Put it down to air bleeding from the control valve coolant pathway, presume it has a temp sensor in it.
Rear drums sounded a bit crusty but thought that would likely clear up, no budget for new shoes and drums just now.
Following Friday a halfrauds mot was booked and I made the early train journey over to where the car was kept to run it over.
While insured it had no mot so couldn't tax it. Law states you are fine to go to and from a booked not appointment but still doesn't feel quite right.
Sods law I passed a mobile tax anpr van complete with taxman in the front. Arse.
No doubt that will generate some sort of hassle.
Car drives nicely and us certainly peppy enough to keep up with traffic. Quite confident at this point.
Anyway booked car in for 11:45 came back at 1:00 and the sodding thing hadn't moved. Another 45 minute wait and it failed on a sole brake pipe at the rear balancer valve.
Double arse. One of the few jobs I don't have tools for.
So I asked how much for the Halfords lads to do it and 95 quid was quoted.
Just about worth it due to not having to mess about with retest fees or taking it elsewhere.
That will be done on Tuesday fingers crossed!
While waiting I gave the nice black mark down the side of it a t cut and hoovered it out.
Cassette deck. Autoreverse!
Finally rear washer didn't squirt, just made a pool of water under the dumper.
The pipe had snapped in the boot grommet along with a couple if wires. Soldering iron out and some thick walked silicon joined the break.
Will update come Tuesday!

The explination from the "garage" made no sense saying they broke the flaring tool on the crusty balance valve.
You flare the brake line not the thing you are screwing it into.
Anyway Wednesday we got our MOT.
Sadly this is the "replace front to back" brake job.
Lovely.
So that will be getting redone this weekend.
Have some other bits I will update as I go along.
