After looking for something in the Hillman/Chrysler/Talbot range for a while and an empty garage to put it in this came up for sale an hour away from me.
Saying to the good lady “I’m just going to have a look” we set off.
A couple of hours and a test drive later the deposit was paid and it was on my drive the following week.
It needs a few minor jobs doing on the cosmetic side but it passed its mot a couple of weeks ago with only two advisories.
No idea why that is upside down, clearly I’m better with spanners rather than technology
Just over 58000 miles and that old style smell to it

No plans other than changing the wheels as it is too original to mess with

Brilliant! My dad had one exactly the same minus the sunroof.
I built a MK1 avenger with a zetec running bike carbs, 5 speed box, lsd, bilstein's ect. I alway regret selling that car and hope its still alive and kicking somewhere.
Good luck with whatever you have planned for her.

That was a proper name for a car: Chrysler Avenger.
Double dead 'ard.

Best of luck.

Wasn't that a runout model called the Sunseeker?

I seem to remember a brochure with the two door shell, weird half a vinyl roof, etc.

My dad had numerous Avengers.

Well found, I haven't seen one on the road for years; there can't be too many left.

Wow, not seen one of these for ages, my dad and uncle used to buy and sell cars in the late seventies and early eighties* and it was always, a Cortina, Viva, Chevette, Marina or Avenger.

Not a bad looking car really, though like Maserati 3200's the earlier ones had prettier Hockey Stick back lights biggrin so its basically a Maserati.

  • They are still at it, some things never change, MG ZT V8 currently being fettled by them, nice that some things never change.

This is an iPhone issue and to do with how you hold the phone to take the photos. To correct them edit the photo on the phone.... rotate it 90 degrees and then save it and then rotate it back to how it should be and save it and it’ fixes the meta data so when they upload to a forum they are not on the side or upside down

Looks almost like they stopped applying it halfway through. Nice car though - the everyday stuff from that era is now almost as rare as the performance or exotica cars, and for me just as interesting. I have a random childhood memory of being taken to a monster truck show, which I envisioned being in a massive stadium like you get in the USA, but instead it was a damp field and they squashed one just like that.

My dad had one as well, same colour, but no vinyl roof or chrome... CSG344L... funny what you remember. On the second day it burst a heater hose, and filled the footwells with water. Soon after got sideswiped by a lorry and the wheel nuts destroyed the rear wing and door. The repair paint job was considerably better than the original on the other side. If was a decent motor for the time though.

This came with the car, an interesting piece of its history

No expense spent on the dash.

Different times. My daily is probably 8 to 10 inches wider but with less room than this

The groovy fabric seats. Fronts need a clean, back as good as new

I think the sunseeker was its predecessor, this was sold as a Special

I remember being in the local showroom in Hyde in 1970 for the grand "unveiling" of the "new" Hillman Avenger, complete with full sized cardboard cut outs of John Steed and Emma Peel. lol!

IIRC the Avenger’s roof was a stressed panel and fitting a sun roof was not recommended. Interesting that yours has one and hasn’t fallen apart.

I remember the days of the sunroof as an aftermarket accessory. And the heated rear screen bought from Halfords on a roll.

Sunseekers were 4 door shells and all in a pale yellow with white vinyl half-roof IIRC.

OP: yours needs Rostyles.
