So for those who remember I bought a Mercedes S430 around Christmas 2 years ago for somewhere around £800-900.

I traded this for a 2000 Porsche Boxster S - genuinely no idea why the man wanted to straight swap for a starting to turn crusty old Merc but not my loss. Sent it for a Mot and passed straight away after I fixed the exhaust leak which caused the old owner to fail 2 mots (actually probably the reason to swap). I really didn’t like the thing so did less than 300 miles in it. Kept it for a year or so I think.

It finally left this morning after being on sale for a good month at £4000. No service history/non factory colour/awful interior colour didn’t help. Was a tidy 80k mike car which always started despite sitting about.

Kept getting offers of things like quad bikes, motor cross bikes, clapped out BMW’s. Finally got a offer as a swap for either a 06 focus st running 425bhp or a 05 Range Rover with a few questionable mods but fairly tidy.

Was tempted by the focus but with a 200sx with the engine just rebuilt (by myself and have never done one before) and ready to go in when I get home it seemed stupid to have 2 turbo cars.

Now I am yet again abroad in the USA so unable to do the swap so in steps my mum. Exact same circumstances when I swapped the Merc for Porsche so maybe she is good luck smile

Now onto the car which I have yet to see outside of some pictures. It’s a 2005 td6 with I think 109k miles and some very questionable exterior mods. Story is it’s the Ex wife car and he just wanted shot of the thing.

It has some form of history but no real idea what. Fairly clean mot history for this type of car.

Goes into gear fine, has the usual height sensor faults and a anti roll bar link needing sorted and the usual rusty rear arches. That’s all I know about just now. Interior is immaculate as my mum says. Having 4 of these now in the household we are pretty used to the sheds they often are at this price range. Haven’t ran a hpi so no idea if it’s ever been smashed.

Considering it basically cost me £800 + 2 mots on the previous 2 cars I feel it’s been a ok trade either way.

Seat is in 1 piece!

Bloody hell, those wheels...

Still, good bartering. I think.

Wifes car ? that has all the hallmarks of a Essex geyser on a budget.

ST running 425 bhp, suspect that may have been your second engine rebuild opportunity.

The wheels are the worst part of the exterior I think. Luckily I still have a spare set of wheels from my last one.

I’m up in the north of Scotland, I think the bloke worked on the oil rigs as it came from out Aberdeen way. Wish it was Essex as less rust haha

Update at last.

Got back to the country 2 weeks ago. Brakes were stuck on and clearly in a poor state.

Picked up 4 discs and pads plus everything to service it for £250 from Eurocarparts with the 50% off sale. Changed 3 out of 4 so far including swapping a caliper with a torn boot.

Decided to get the radio working on one of the rather wet days. Removed some aftermarket dvd player for the rear screens along with the dodgy wiring which had what looked to be old house wiring. This brought sound back to the radio, happy days!

Decided to give the car a wash as the weather had dried off abit, just a quick pressure wash/wipe down to remove all the crap which had gathered. Went in for dinner, came out to see smoke pouring out of the engine bay behind the battery. Traced it down to the drain tube from bottom corner of windscreen was putting water directly onto the webasto heater which had shorted it out. I have since pulled the fuse and unplugged it before I find a replacement in future.

While dealing with the radio I found the bluetooth module had been bypassed - by taking the connector of the end of the fiber cable and sticking them end to end to make the loop work. Bluetooth module was pretty dated and had some snapped pins so clearly was not going to be fixed. After doing some research it turns out you can fit the bluetooth module from a discovery 4 which has updated functionality such as phone book and automatically connects when you enter the car without entering the code.

To make it work all you have to do is take a PC wire and stick it on 2 pins 15+31 (if remembering correct) and then into 2 holes on the old connector for power and ground. Push the fiber connector into the unit and everything works with nothing else. I however didnt have the connector ( nor can I find one for sale without the whole fiber loom) so mine are pushed in and held by tape for now. Its not pretty but it works.

Now for the tyres + wheel problem. As I said I cannot stand the wheels on the car just now, was asking on here for 18/19" tyres which were big and chunky as they seem hard to find. A pher called "itsallyellow" offered me a set of Cooper Zeon LTZ 275/65/20 tyres which are stupidly large but with a 2/2.5" lift will fit. These are due to arrive with me next week so will see which wheels + offset I need to make them fit.

This is someone elses l322 on similar size tyres.

I agree that you're current ones are awful but that ^^^ is arguably worse

(and I have big wheels and tyres on my Jeep)

Thats just the tyre size not the wheels. At the moment I have my current wheels and a pair of 20" stormer wheels like these. Depending on offsets might need spacers or another set of something.

I know but it looks terrible - it's a Range Rover not a mud plugger

My last one was used offroad on much smaller tyres. I live in the north of Scotland in the countryside with lots of single track lanes/offroad things to do.

I think I'd have stuck with the nearly-free Boxster, but good work!

I had 22's on a RRS, cracked when driving along the M56. Took them off and found some genuine 19" ones that looked ok with tyres. Found the back of the other wheels to be cracked in at least 8 cracks, plus the 3 that happened to mine. These weren't genuine LR wheels though, hope the 20's are a bit more durable!

Passed its Mot today!

Still got some work to do in regards to the air suspension randomly going off now and then. Once I get this sorted I can raise it and fit the big tyres smile

Range Rover had its first real test today.

Anoither of our Range Rovers shat its gearbox towing a plant trailer with a suv on it up a steep long hill. The A9 heading south from Inverness for those who are local.

Hooked up the roughly 7ton of weight and towed it all up the hill without much of issue. Pretty impressed as I thought I might have to go for low range to get the lot moving.

Sounds safe and in no way likely to kill another rangies gearbox. hehe

Car was on one of those metal hitchbar type things with the engine running getting steering/brakes but required 1 Range at the front to do the pulling haha.

Fault with other Rangie wasnt caused by the hill, the hill finished the poor sod off.

Car has been going well untill just before xmas. I preemptively changed the gearbox oil, all happy parked the car up. Next morning the front right air bag decided to be holy and was flat.

Ordered a new airbag, took forever to come. Removed the old bag, damper oil filling it. Ah well might as well throw the bag on till a new damper turns up. Nope, wont seal with new or old seals. Gave up at this point out of frustration and parked it in the corner to look sad.

This week after pulling my Rolls Royce shell out the garage and weather improving I decided to make it work again. Bought a used strut + airbag for £60 posted just to get it going again - could do with 4x new dampers when I feel like that job.

Happily came back to life at a normal height so I have treated it to a order of 2.5" lift rods from the usa. The new 34" tyres will fit with some arch molesting and spacers.

While it was in the garage I fitted the new used tailgate. When I got the car the top half of the tailgate was matte black with patches of rust, after giving it a few hits some filler came off exposing a lovely cardboard box holding on some more filler. My mum has another black l322 which she just bought a new non rusty tailgate to replace her slightly rusty but non cardboard one. Swapped them over which took 2 hours or so but now it is no longer matte black which is nice.

Excuse picture quality.
