Hi all,

Here is our latest purchase, its a 2005 Audi TT 1.8 turbo. Being a 2005 its the facelift model with the 3 bar grill, rather than the old 5. I thought it was 180bhp but the HPI check said it was 190bhp. I'm not sure which is correct, but it certainly pulls nicely regardless.

This is one of those cars on my 'to own' list and they are pretty cheap now. Initially I budgeted £1,500 for one, but these were really ropy high milers with some scary warnings on the MOT history. So the budget went up to £3,000 and we got this one for £2,700.

It has a good history of stamps, with receipt for pump and belts being done 3 years, 10,000 miles ago. The dashpod is all working and it has a CD player rather than the tape deck from all the other models we looked at! We purchased privately from a really nice guy who seemed very genuine. Lovely thing to drive and fits our family of three - just about!

It is a 14 year old car however, so we were expecting some faults. Things I've noticed that don't seem to work as they should:

  • The drivers mirror doesn't work electrically.
  • We only have one key, so need to budget for a second.
  • The carpet mats appear to be generic, so I'd like some tailored ones that fit better.
  • When trying to move the passenger seat to fold down for access to the rear, you have to pull both leavers on either side of the seat. This is a real ball ache when trying to get our little one in the back. I suspect the seat mechanism might have broken within the seat?
  • The drivers side heated seat button doesn't light up when you have it pulled out, only when pushed in - but the function does work as its meant to.
So nothing major of concern, and we knew about the key before we bought it. I'd also like to have a good detail on the car as being black its swirl mark city - but the Mrs reminded me that this is just a runabout and no point in spending mega money on it. So, maybe it'll become my learning ground on how to machine polish? Or maybe not...!

Looking forward to the ownership of this one, initial driving experience is really good. They are really small little things compared to modern cars, which makes driving and parking a breeze. The colour choice was of Mrs Cloudy. I wasn't that fussy either way really for colour on these cars, I think they look good in all comours, although if pushed I'd say I liked the silver the best, but that was her least favourite. She liked red, but we couldn't find one locally that looked decent, so next option was black or grey, or dark blue. No grey ones either, and this black one had the best advert and showed the most promise. So now its ours and i think it does look good.

Fingers crossed for a trouble free experience!

Looks very tidy. Must admit the mark 1 TT is also on my like to own list.

Don't know much about these but a quick look on parkers suggests the Sept05-Apr06 cars were 187bhp.

Performance wise not a lot different from the earlier cars (4 ft-lb more torque and 0.4 secs quicker to 60).

I always thought the single exhaust denoted the FWD 150bhp version...

I think this is a 150bhp then. Any idea how to tell for certain other than badging please - I'm curious now? As they are all 1.8T the logbook proba my won't give any pointers either :-s

Get the engine code from the vehicle or the V5C. A quick google of the engine code will confirm what output the engine is.

I owned a 1.8t 180 many years ago now; it had a single tailpipe. Suspect the 190 is the same. Twin pipes were 225 / v6 versions.

I've googled the VIN and that just brings up the generic details. I tried the engine number at that brings up some very NSFW results, but nothing relating to cars. eek

However, reading through my HPi report, this says that my car is a 190bhp model. I'm not sure if thats just generic data, or vehicle specific.

EDIT: Found it! I just googled the BVR element instead which brought up this:

1781cc 20v Turbo - 190 hp (5700 rpm) - 240 Nm (1980-5400 rpm)

Engine Code: BVR

Speed : 234 km / h
Acceleration 0-100 : 7.0 s
Urban consumption : 11.1 l/100km
Extraurbà consumption: 6.3 l/100km
Average consumption : 8.1 l/100km

Reference link

So it does appear to be the 190bhp model. smile

Can you have an ECU reflash on these to release a bit more fizz and improve drivability?

They didn’t make a 150ps version.

Only 180 and 225 (and 250 in V6 guise)

I must admit there are more options there than i'd imagined.

Yeah I think so. A quick look online and it shows that the 190bhp can be mapped to 225bhp with just a chip/re-map so pretty impressive gains. However, the 190bhp is plenty for what we'll be using it for to be honest. It feels nice and quick even with the power its got. smile

You are correct, single exhaust, non quattro = 150 bhp

From memory, single exhaust with quattro were 180, twin exhaust were 225 bhp

Nice car. I've got an 02 225 and I have to say I love it, despite what some others may think.
