E61 530d M Sport eBay impulse purchase shedding
Discussion
Much as I love my manual M2 Comp it’s not a great motorway car and I’ve racked up ALOT of miles in it already and as it’s a keeper I thought I’d find a way to justify getting another car. My 2014 Defender is great but, again, not a great M Way car. Nor is the old Series 2a. So, I toyed with a R Class Merc for a while and found one that looked good. So much car for the cash, and had found one I wanted, was in queue at bank to get money out when the owner texted me to say it had been sold.
I had the car buying bit between the teeth so went home and searched on eBay (estate, German, diesel, 3 litres min), and a very old very cheap e61 530d came up in the spec I wanted with not too many miles (136k), the right colour with pan roof. Very ropey in some ways (cracked windscreen, bad battery, one key, air bag sensor ropey, but it has been owned by a mechanic and the main issues had been sorted (swirl flaps, remap/dpf sorted, gearbox flushed) etc etc but also very clean and lovely black leather.
Anyway, it was cheap as chips (really), so bought it sight unseen in classic eBay style. It made the journey home without missing a beat, and as a mechanism for keeping the miles off the M2 and hammering down the motorway in a more comfortable manner than a Land Rover, I think it’s great so far.
The tyres are new but horrible black plastic things, so I’ll sort those, the windscreen, maybe get rid of the 19” spider wheels and get MV2s, give it a big service, and then hopefully put another 100k miles in it.
The tech is old, Bluetooth doesn’t seem to work, but hell, it’s a lot of car for the money. Am pretty sure bits will fall off and warning lights will come on, but as a friend said, as long as it continues to makes forward progress, none of that matters.
