After the 140i went back to the lease company (wife’s work) I found myself running sheds again and as much fun as this can be I wasn’t enjoying it too much. After the turbo went on my latest shed purchase I pulled the plug and bought this.

Spec, colour, etc are all ideal, it’s got Xenons, heated cloth, sunroof, a Spanish box. Touch screen stereo, Bluetooth, cruise etc. Perfect.

Why a Golf GTI?

I’ve had various BMWs over the years, from 330ds to M3s and the aforementioned M140i, however I just feel comfortable in a Golf, it’s a bit like a pair of your favourite but worn old shoes that you can’t bear to part with. In short I like a Golf.

As stated in the title, it was a bit of an impulse buy. Seen it, liked it, miles history etc checked out, bought it.
However what I didn’t research correctly was timing chains on these, wow!!! I have a sneaky suspicion mine has stretched as there’s a metallic rattle on the over run so it’s booked in to have it diagnosed at the dealers next week.

In the meantime I’ll be using it’s bigger older brother, the wife’s R32

Be interested to see how this pans out. IIRC the chain issue lasted up until 2012 until the tensioners were updated. Annoyingly there's a massive price hike at that age/manufacturing year with the pre-2012 ones being relatively cheaper.

Good luck!

Started out in a golf too - and been into big BM's most of my adult life now. Lately been getting nostalgic about getting back in a hot hatch so keen to see how you get on. Great choice looks fantastic!

I also like Golfs.

That sounds a really good specification (and I like red on them).

lovely motor - the 2.0 tsi engines perform well to tune. Exhaust, intake and remap takes it to 300bhp.

intake manifold is a weak point but part can be bought for £100 from ebay china and 2 hours to replace.

tensioner can be updated all in for £400 from a good indy.

I have the same bmw/ vw alliance. BMW for fun car and Golf for the daily at the moment and i think thats how it will stay generally with a few dip off's here and there. In the past it was the opposite!

I've recently sold my 5 door Tornado Red mk6 Golf GTi and it was my favourite car I've ever owned.
I hope you have many happy miles in it!

Cheers for the positive comments guys, Golfs do get a bit of a hard time on this forum it seems, but there are those that appreciate them on here too.

I’ve priced up the bits for doing the chain, I think I’m just going to do it next week for my own peace of mind.

2 smokin barrels, your as bad as me, I’ve literally had loads of Golfs over the years, my Mk3 VR6s being firm favourites

This reminds me, I must update the R32 thread too

Love a Golf.

I have had a MK2 8V GTI, MK3 Convertible, MK4 GTI Turbo and two MK7.5 GTI's. Fabulous allrounders, particularly the 7.5.

I moved from the last 7.5 to an Arteon R, which whilst almost a second faster to 60mph, never felt like it.

I would have another Golf GTI tomorrow, if the wife'd work scheme hadn't culled the list of available cars :-(

Boredom at home and as there’s been some changes to the car since I last wrote in here I thought I’d update the thread.

The Timing chain was replaced at the main dealer in August 19, along with a major Engine and air con service Carried out.
Annoyingly the supplying dealer had only reset the service indicator as it was due when I bought the car according to the service book.

I purchased 4 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s to fit to the Monzas after a winter refurb, however a mate was selling Some 18” VWR Wheels, which are basically TD 1.2s That take a VW centre cap and use original bolts. The Michelin’s were fitted to those instead and the monzas put in the shed.

Around the same time I started looking for a DAB headunit, as after the 140i went back I was Starting to miss some digital only stations, three attempts at getting the correct RCD510 with the correct part number which had DAB+ and I had success. The DAB aerial amplifier and loom Were bought from kufatec and I fitted that one evening after work.
I need to upgrade the Bluetooth module to allow track display and control from the headunit, I will probably do this in the coming weeks.

This was attempt no 2 fitted

Just before Christmas my warranty claim for corrosion was accepted by VW, so it went in for new wings, rear arch repairs and I chose to paint the rear bumper and bonnet at the same time, the rear bumper was a totally different colour as it had been previously painted, badly, prior to my ownership. Can’t fault the job the body shop done, and all one colour again.

The VWR wheels were a bit love/hate, one day I liked them, the next I hated them so I managed to do a deal with my mate who was using some 8x18” BBS VZs on his A3 track car. He initially wanted these prior to buying the BBS’ so it worked out for us both.

They needed a refurb so this has been carried out, and I picked the fresh wheels up yesterday

I noticed last week one of the rear springs were broken so I ordered up some Eibach Springs, and new front top mounts, these are being fitted along with the wheels on Monday. I can’t wait to see how it looks and drives.

Currently the car is having a 3 stage paint correction and Ceramic coating at a friends, He’s off work and bored to tears so happy to get something to do.
I Can’t wait to see the finished product next week.

On a side note, I have a bit of history with red Golf GTIs and BBS wheels, this was my Mk4 Anniversary with Genuine LMs in 2008.

Didn't realise the mk6s had corrosion issues?

I sold my mk5 gti last year to try to get into a decent mk2. It never happened for various reasons, so going to get another mk5 this summer! Can't beat a gti for all round ownership.

That does look very nice OP! As above I wasn't aware the Mk6 had corrosion issues, thought it was just the Mk5. How much did the new timing chain set you back, if you don't mind saying?

Following this with interest as a mk6 is high on my list of Forester replacements as a commuting/fun dog carrying motor.
Yours looks awesome in red and those BBS will look amazing!

Golf MK6 GTi's are a really good every day car.

This was my MK6 GTi. It had a few mods and was pushing 275bhp on an APR Stage 2+ tune. I actually do miss this car as it was brilliant for the 5 years I owned it.

Thanks for the positive replies, the BBS wheels I cannot wait to get fitted, it should hopefully look good.

Sadly the Mk6 has corrosion issues, not quite on the level the Mk5 does, but they are there. Being from NE Scotland adds to the problem with the sea air. Thankfully it’s all fixed now.

The timing chain replacement was done along with the major engine and air con service, it cost £1497, however the parts and labour rates were staff prices due to mrs MRT working for the group that runs the VW dealer, albeit she’s at BMW.
