2006 Volvo XC90 D5 Ocean Race

Bought this recently to replace my V50, recent cam-belt,great colour and a manual box sold me!

Short MOT too, so will be carrying out a few checks/service in preparation for this in October

Brake fluid / Fuel filter will be done later, need to pick up my ezbleed and wait until the tank is below 3/4 before i change the filter

Assuming the XC90 is the same as my V70, just make sure your low pressure fuel pump works before you change the filter (you should hear it priming when you switch the ignition on).

It’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t, but a tad disheartening when you’ve changed your filter in the pissing rain and the fuel system that you are expecting to self-prime does not do so and your car won’t start, leading to you needing to learn how to bleed injectors (not difficult, as it turns out), also in the pissing rain.

Ask me how I know.....

ETA: having said that, is yours a Euro4? If it is you won’t be able to bleed the injectors because they changed the design such that the high pressure fuel pump is incapable of sucking fuel all the way from the tank. It’s unlikely that your low pressure pump has gone anyway so you can probably just ignore all of this, but it’s something I wish I’d known beforehand!

Nice buy
Looks like a Euro 4 as I could spot the inlet actuator arm.
Would recommend a remap in the future, really helps the engine to haul the weight without having too much of an impact on mpg.

I had a V8 Ocean Race in the same spec / color. Lovely car, I miss the soundtrack.

Although my suspension was rather knocky when I finally traded it in. I suspected a big bill was coming.

The V8’s are great. My friend had one when we lived in the Middle East. Used to drive WOT everywhere, great soundtrack.

We have a 2013 XC90 platinum 3.2 USDM model.

It seems the interior quality went right down from 2011 onwards (cheaper leather etc)

Very comfortable cars and suprisingly capable off road. My wife thinks AWD means she can drive it anywhere which means every month since we've owned it some sort of bushing has to be replaced. (Rear nivomats last month)

Really practical cars though if a little heavy on suspension components. The amount of stuff it can hold with all the seats folded down is amazing. Its also good for sleeping in on long trips too. Full size double airbed fits in the back comfortably.

Had one of these until recently, but with the 185bhp engine.

Fantastic comfertable car.

From my experience they are really hard on suspension components and breaks. Also the condenser is susceptible to stones going through it.

I'm missing it this weekend as trying to fit everything I need to Camping in my 5 series is a challenge.

Cheers all, its the E4 185bhp (DPF) version - keeping my eye on the DPF through VIDA as i dont want any DPF issues.

Got a few little issues to sort - rear parking sensor and weeping power steering oil cooler. Interior carpets need a good clean too !

Sounds like you had an 'interesting' time, i will do some research before tackling it - hopefully this weekend. Its under the rear drivers side wheel and have read that the plastic housing can be difficult to remove

Nice, Following with interest as we are looking at one for our next family bus. Will be hopefully getting one when the wife's maternity leave ends in december.

I have a dash message relating to Alarm System Service (siren issue) and Parking System Service (dud parking sensor) - these can be removed by pressing the stalk and are only present when first starting the car - am i correct in thinking these wont be an issue come MOT time?? The VOSA regs (see im a typical volvo owner) dont seem much help.

I bought an oil filter wrench and it came off no problem after a little bit of force. Do drain it first though to minimise the amount of diesel you get covered in.

If you don't mind me asking, what did it set you back?

There's some tutorials on youtube on how to sort the alarm siren battery, that's the main culprit on a V70 of similar vintage. Seems straightforward enough and should cure my Alarm System Service message.

Tester should be looking for EML or safety warning lights. They may note as an advisory if really anal.

I kind of agree that for the XC90 it would be more suited to the auto box - as for price - my lips are sealed :-)

That puts my mind at rest a little, with the MOT looming i didnt want to have to squeeze the fix in beforehand - i will replace the parking sensor but may not bother with the alarm siren.

Next time you are under it would you mind posting a picture of the rear passenger footwell from the underside?

I'm trying to work out if my wife has stoved ours in during one of her "off road adventures" or if it's like that from the factory

Make sure you change the Haldex oil apparently it's often overlooked according to my mechanic. He changed ours and it didn't look the healthiest even after 74k (or maybe the yanks just don't maintain their cars)
