Not saved from the scrapheap, but another Audi (Mk1 TT 255)
Discussion
So,
After quite some deliberation I decided to replace my much loved Audi 80 with another Audi. You can read the story of the 80 in its own thread, now sadly ended. > https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
The new car needed to fulfill the duties of the 80, being used as a daily and had to be workable as such, but also address some of the short comings of the old car namely: Power and Air-con.
I also wanted something with a smudge of potential 'classicness', something a little interesting (for me anyway), something utterly stock and unmolested with all the paperwork intact (not always easy to find nowadays) and not too ruinous to run.
Well, it's 'Quattro' with an Audi badge, still 4 cylinder, but this time has a turbo and more than twice the horsepower of the old 80.
I've bought a mk1 TT. It's the 225 model, haldex AWD, 61k miles, a late 2003 face-lift model. Completely original (even the Chorus Radio/Cassette with Bose) Everything works, with a few minor bits and pieces to fettle. All four tyres recently replaced and all the oily bits serviced, including cambelt and tensioner. Mauritius blue with a grey leather interior. DSG was out of the question, so have a 6-speed manual.
I did (briefly) consider the Quattro Sport, but they seem to be silly money. The 3.2 V6 also appealed, but finding a good one with a manual gearbox proved hard, and fuel consumption was a factor in the final decision.
Thus, a new thread... and here she is.

Cheers,
Drew.

Early DSG boxes weren't the most reliable.
And rare! AFAIK only available on the 3.2 in the TT from 03-on, if they did a 20vT it had a torque converter auto and having driven one of those in the MK4 Golf, it was bloody awful! Whereas the 6-speed DSG in the MK5 is superb.mooseracer said:

Exactly this. Even the dealer I bought the car from said he wouldn't touch them on the mk1 TT. Lots of horror stories online, cars not selecting reverse, getting stuck in gear etc.I'm not really an automatic sort of chap... Not yet anyway. ;-)

After your 80 thread, looking forward to this. Had several machines with the VAG 20vT unit but never had the balls yet to have a TT, waiting until I can get one on the classic insurance 20-year blanket here, as it's not practical enough for a daily!
Current plans are to get to know it, clean it up, fix a few minor niggles and daily it for now. A bit of motorway duty and running here and there. Mostly solo journeys, a bit of business, occasional weekends away with the wife. First impressions are good, very quiet on the motorway, nicely brisk rather than fast (compared with the supercharged Mx5), amazing interior. Feels like a GT car really. Haven't really explored the handling yet
Cheers,
Drew.

BIG fan of these, they still look so sharp and current. Remember loving the muted metallic green colour too.
Was considering one of these as a replacement for Mrs. Vince's Puma, but I did the bodywork in the end instead. Lots more pics please!

Only got that one last night on my phone before the heavens opened - then it was dark!

So sad about the 80, was a great thread.
Much fettling to do on this?

Interior needs a good valet - leather is in good condition but a lot of inbuilt grime after 16 years. A few scuffs on the interior trim, scratches on the metal that sort of thing. CD changer isn't working, but will likely pull the standard Chorus headunit (keep in storage of course) and replace with mp3 unit.
Dashboard has some of the classic missing pixel lines, but everything works.
Outside needs the usual clay bar and polish, paint is otherwise original (a few stone chips on the front).
One sill has been crunched by careless lifting in the the past. Small bits of rust beginning to appear in bottom edges of wheelarches etc. Alloys aren't bad, but unrestored, so a bit of bubbling here and there.
Suspect a small vacuum leak on the engine somewhere, as the idle has a very small hunt (10-20 rpm plus/minus).
Cheers,
Drew.

F*** me, that interior still looks the business. These look so bespoke and sharp for a mass produced car.

ETA this was my favourite non monochrome colour:

Looks a pretty tidy example. These are my guilty pleasure, had one but it was a bit of a woofer, bought in haste cos it had TT Sport wheels and looked ace. A lot slag them off as I think they expect too much in terms of feedback, I thought mine drove pretty well, nice driving position, lovely gearchange and could fling it about, loads of grip.
Destined to be a classic, I would have another.
