The eBay Honda Accord Shed Daily
Discussion
So to save some money while I do my house up, and to save some daily commuting costs, and to give me a chance to take my EP3 off the road to clean up the underside, rust treat and underseal properly.... My EP3 thread is here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
So.... behold the £1,100 Honda Accord. I wasn't really in the market for anything paticular, I was just generally looking at Vectras, Astras, older Civic's etcc and then the Accord appeared and it just seemed miles ahead in terms of an all round package.
Spec:
- Honda Accord Mk7 2.2 CDTI Sport
- 138bhp (remapped to 190bhp according to the previous owner, but doesn't feel like it)
- 6 gears,
- Sat Nav
- Bluetooth
- 2 keys
- Cruise control
- Working aircon that blows cold!
- Electric folding mirrors
- Plenty of life in all four tyres.... although they are mixed brands which sound more like pokemon... but hey ho this is shed motoring!
- Brakes could use some attention... they're spongy and not setting the world on fire...
- 160,000 miles
- 13 service stamps up to 91,000 in the service book, previous owner claimed he's serviced it every 6,000 since himself, but we've all heard that before and the oil looks closer to tar at the moment.....
- Receipts of work for a brand new alternator, battery and two front brake calipers in 2018.
- Timing chain changed and tensioners and oil crankshaft seals in June 2018 along with a service at a cost of £1400!
- All in all £1,100! The owner wanted £1,400 but I managed to get him down and we agreed the deal
It averaged 57mpg on the drive home, 112 miles done and the fuel needle hasn't even moved, and it still says there's 617 miles left on the trip computer
and it was was probably sitting at around 90mph without the cruise control being on pretty much spirited foot to the floor driving, road tax is £160 for the year vs £315 on my EP3.
First fill up on the drive home with my mates S3

The bay needs some love

Headlights need some attention

Maybe a lot of attention

Post first wash.... and jesus the paintwork is the worst i've ever had on any car, so it needs a claybar and polish and wax in the very near future...

Here's a list of expenditure so far, i'm yet to fit any of the below as it's all yet to be delivered, but this is getting shed budget only, so I feel i've done well with the below for the money spent

They are great cars. I took my 57 plate from 90k to 155k miles in 2 years and it never let me down in that time. Mine was the same engine but the "executive".
I replaced the alternator as it started to get noisy, and some tyres, but nothing else needed doing. I really like the cabin. Bought mine for £4k and part ex-d it for £1k but it had been reversed into a bollard at some point - no idea who did that.... :-)
Have fun in a lovely car!

Cheers for the responses guys, all positive so far which is a plus!
So far i've fitted some new headlight bulbs, LED sidelights, aero wiper blades, new interior mats, give it a bloody good clean and hopefully get an oil change done this weekend before it's daily duties begin and it can earn it's keep before it gets anymore parts.
I give it a brief drive the other day and I kind of feel the clutch has seen better days but i'll figure this more when I'm driving it daily... I've heard its not cheap to get a new one fitted and I wouldn't be surprised if its still the original clutch 160k miles, hopefully its fine and will limp along anyway.
I'll post up some update pics once the oil change is done, I've also got a Turtle Wax headlight restoration kit I picked up for a tenna so i'm curious how that turns out also.

My boss bought one new in 07 and gave it his brother in 2017. Having completed over 200k miles. It had regular servicing, brakes, tyres and a clutch around 180k. Clutch was a bit of a pig but manageable.
His brother still runs it now and last seen was over 250k. However after 200k it started to fall apart pretty quickly. Brake calipers, suspension arms, shocks etc...
Regarding the remap. My dad had his 2.2cdti crv done roughly 180ish hp not sure on torque figures but enough to see the clutch off on the way home! It's a weird power delivery. There's no thud of torque in the kidneys like the pd vag diesels give but a lazy continuous surge of torque all the way to the red line. My dad has just had his clutch and dmf done in his 4wd crv. What an absolute b
d that was.

What an absolute b
d that was. Had a 2.4 Type s, car flew along for 100k in 3 years, chewing front tyres every 10-12k, then at around 100k clutch failure was coming, Honda wanted 800, as they stated sub frame out. Had my indi look at it, he said give it Honda, as its a pig of a job. So was sold on Bay of E and went a further 8k in two years, last checked on MOT check, EML light killed it. I would have another
So the Accord's daily duties began today, I give it a quick clean up last night just to see how it can potentially look.... although it's a budget shed daily i'd still like it to be as clean as possible and presentable so here goes:
How the paintwork was

How it looked (right side of Honda badge only) after a claybar, polish and gloss.

It came up rather well I must say... so I had a go at the rest of the car

this was off the drivers door only... just to give you an idea of how bad the paint work is. 160,000 miles worth of contamination!

Anyway, a couple more pics now it's sitting a little cleaner.... I should get the oil change done this weekend.

Had a K24 accord, for just over a year was pretty reliable but needed a clutch which was indeed a pig of a job, I got an indy to fit one. Also needed drive shaft for vibration at the steering wheel. These cars can be got cheap but many will need extensive work or parts so it all adds up.
This is a diesel, so not really a fan but good luck.

The biting point on the clutch on it is rather high currently, so I imagine this will need changing down the line. £1200 job or so i've heard which is more than what I paid for the car. Apart from that the car seems 100% sweet after driving it for a couple days now, cabin is a lovely place to be and its nice and quiet and rides the bumps well. It's a totally different contract to driving my EP3 as a daily and im enjoying it a lot so far. This is a diesel, so not really a fan but good luck.

Nice motor yours. I have a 150k 2.2 remapped diesel so very similar to yours- Clutch has been slipping for about 50k, had it remapped on 90k, but as long as I don't boot it everywhere it is fine
- Accord nerds say only use 0W 30 oil
- Accord nerds (and me) say only use the Bosch fuel filter, I had a disaster when I didn't follow this advice
- A remapped 2.2 Accord can beat a 2006 E220d in a drag race
and keep up with most modern cars- 16" tyres are much more comfortable than 17"
- Don't throw it in the corners too much body roll

- timing chain can wear but mine hasn't touch wood
Great cars for the money

They are certainly a nice place to be for the money you get them for, I would have got one for the missus rather than a Honda jazz but it was too large a car for her as a first car to insure.Have a 07 plate EX estate version since 2012 and 64k. Now on 142k.
Make sure the exhaust manifold isn't leaking. There was a recall from Honda but you are way outside the mileage/age extension.
Calipers can get sticky on the brakes.
Great cars and still looking for something to replace mine.

Have an estate K24, very last of the gen 7, MY2008. Bought it in 2013 on 50k, LPG converted it first month.
It’s now on 178k and has been so utterly reliable and cheap to run (other than the £500+ tax!!) that my car allowance payments appreciated enough for me to get myself into a 996 weekender.
It’s starting to get a tad rough around the edges now. Bits of bodywork taking a beating, the odd issue cropping up under the bonnet. This started 18 months ago when I decided to build my own house and it was pressed into hard work towing a water trailer, collecting timber and other heavy materials etc
It’s still soldiering on and took a trip to the Belgian Grand Prix this year, 4 up and packed to the rafters with camping gear.
I’ve started the search for a Disco 4 as it’s replacement and I swear it bloody knows as it’s started making a bearing type noise today.
Good luck with yours. Top shedding

Got cracking with the oil change on Sunday,

Sump plug didn't have a washer either.. o well.

fresh filter going in

Old filter covered in TAR.... was crazy crazy how bad the oil was that come out of this car, it was literally like sludge.

Guess who didn't gauge how far the oil would blast out when I removed the sump plug resulting being in the pit below the car with oil splashing out everywhere, and then proceeded to drop the sump plug in the oil drainer tub I had and then... that would be me.

Messy job... piece of piss doing it on the EP3 but the access on the accord seemed abit more awkward, but oh well. Messy job done and out the way, it seems to be running a lot quieter now and smoother which is a plus!
MPG report also, I'm 263 miles in and got half a tank left from a £70 fill up at an overpriced motorway Shell garage, so the range on this beast is looking good
.
Driving to Manchester today also as i'm off to Norway for the week with work, so it'll be it's first decent run out, looking forward to seeing how it performs.
