Hi all,
Thought i might start a shed thread following my shedding exploits from the shedding thread.
I bought this 2004 XC70 D5 SE Lux recently as a work/tip run/family mobile. Came up fairly local, stuck a bid in on ebay and won the old boy.
It's done near enough 173,000 miles and the bodywork is a bit tatty here and there, but it does have a full (mostly Volvo) service history including belt/water pump replacement at correct intervals, everything works apart from the rear wiper, it's got the optional (now pretty useless) sat nav, sun roof, laminated glass and a few other bits and bobs.
A few things will need some attention however.
There is a fairly sizeable oil leak which a mechanic mate of mine has suggested is probably the rear main seal. Fortunately the same mate is going to sort the repair for me during his evenings so it's going to cost me a fraction of the potential cost from a garage.
When i checked under the car to see where the oil might be emanating from, i noticed the nearside ARB drop link was both detached from the ARB and also bent at 90 degrees, so have a new one to stick on when the subframe is dropped for the oil leak repair.
When i bought it the tracking was miles out and presumably had been for a while as the General Grabber AT2 tyres on there at present are badly worn on the inner edge but fine on the outside edge, not to mention the lack of grip and the road noise from them so am currently on the look out for some all weather road tyres.
Apart from that, it's a lovely place to be and feels great for a 15/16 year old car.
Will update as i go along my shed journey, but for now some pictures of the old bugger.

Possibly the core plug on the side of the block, behind the gearbox leaking? Also make sure the Geartronic box is good, does flare or hold gears. Maybe also worth checking the AWD works too. There's many, rather costly reasons these things can be very cheap!
I had a P3 version and debated a P2 like this but decided there was just too much to go wrong so opted for a V70 D5 with a manual box though I can't deny the fact that I'm looking on the big tyres, raised ride height and (possible) AWD with an air of envy...
Hope it turns out to be a good un!

Looks nice. Lovely interior.
And is this your daily? I like the idea of doing this but the reality of oil stains on the driveway etc and it being off the road for repairs put me off. 1st car was a classic mini so I know how that feels
I do love Volvos.
Yeah it’s my daily, I’m a Quantity Surveyor so do quite a few miles visiting sites, going to meetings etc so something warty and comfy is pretty high on the list. And is this your daily? We’re also leasing an Octavia VRs at the moment so worst case I’d use that if this was off the road for a couple of days, and if more terminal then it would probably be off to shed heaven but we’ll just see how it goes!

It’s definitely coming from where the engine and gearbox meet so I think either the core plug or main seal is likely. Thankfully the auto box is really smooth, very impressed with how smooth actually, changes bang on when you want it to and no jerkiness etc.I had a P3 version and debated a P2 like this but decided there was just too much to go wrong so opted for a V70 D5 with a manual box though I can't deny the fact that I'm looking on the big tyres, raised ride height and (possible) AWD with an air of envy...

I think the AWD is working but haven’t really tested it properly, need to find some mud to give it a test!!
Off to Volvo tomorrow to get a new core plug and main seal and then he’s hoping to get to it at the weekend, all being well. Unfortunately a subframe and gearbox drop are outside of my capabilities!!
Four nearly new Pirelli Scorpion Verde fitted this lunchtime, what a difference they have made. Road noise and ride quality vastly improved and no more horrible vibration through the cabin, lovely stuff.
Mate is doing my oil leak on Sunday for me, then it'll be right as rain, hopefully!!

If the core plug comes right out on these it is like the Exxon Valdiz. It'll drop a litre in 5 miles.
Most probably rear main deal although not that common on autos. Do core plug at same time (about £10 part I think).
Yeah, i picked up both from my local Volvo place earlier, £22 for both, not worth doing only 1 with all the work involved to get to them!!Most probably rear main deal although not that common on autos. Do core plug at same time (about £10 part I think).
Bit of an update on the XC.
It went over to a mate of mine for the core plug to be replaced but on replacing the gearbox and putting everything back together it would start but wouldn't go into drive.
After a few weeks of trying to find time to work out why, he found that the splines on the inside pump gears in the gearbox had sheared off. A new set of gears was ordered, gearbox flushed and re-fitted and it's now working better than ever. Good result (hopefully) for a £35 part.
Only small issue i have now is a squeaky steering wheel but from looking at the forums it could be that he hasn't fitted the steering rack grommet back quite right so will have a look tomorrow.
Nice to have it back, have to be the comfiest car seats available!!
