1997 Volvo V70

2.5 20v to be precise, shares lots with c70 and s70 cars and bought from south of Reading from a lovely man, 3 train adventure to collect.
188k so to coin a phrase ‘ just run in’
Certainly not mint but reasonably solid, drove 220 miles home beautifully.
What have we done so far, despite at no extra cost coming with an organic, vintage tailgate support stick I have put new shocks in along with a tailgate trim repair kit.
Rear view mirror was not standard and had come off, found a lad breaking one so bought the mirror, he threw in a hazard switch and passenger kick plate as well, the kick plate was a right pain to install.
Junked the cd interchanger from the glove box, tah-dah I now have a glove box.
Oil and filter this morning with a new washer for the sump plug.
Treated myself to a couple of new cassettes as well, Drifters and Dire Straits.
Next job will be fun, putting in a new pcv kit.
I do love a Volvo, gearbox and steering are better than the 2005 d5 I had last year.

Some say that the 940 was the last 'real' Volvo (my Dad runs a '98 model with minicab mileage), but I think these have aged really well - combination of practicality and that 5-pot warble. If I was taking an overdose of brave pills, I'd love an S/V70 'R', but I've already got an 'expensive mistress' to try and service. Enjoy, looks like a really clean example.

The colour hides many sins, she is a bit of a rough old girl, looks to have been uncared for by some previous owners, slowly cleaning the inside bit by bit.
The ‘5pot warble’ is brill, especially as there is a very small hole in the exhaust......
Luckily the heated seats work, heavenly.

That’s because the 940’s were the last of the RWD which feels nicer for towing and in general actually. Oh and they really were tanks.

Me and my dad have each owned both. He still prefers the 940 as he tows a lot and his 940 Turbo had loads of grunt.
I prefer my V70 as it’s modern enough to look nice but still a good old brick shape.

I love these old Volvos.
I bought my current one on 150k miles 5 years ago.
It’s just clicked over onto 204k now and has wanted for nothing. They are bombproof old buses.
Mine gets the oil I drop out of my 911 each year and a new filter. I’ve done other stuff as it’s needed it. Plugs, filters, discs and pads etc.

I’ll upgrade to an R at some point or get my dads 100k miler off him when he’s done with it.

As I say to everyone, as a tool it is THE best car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned about 50. In fact I’ve just realised it’s the longest I’ve owned any car for.

Huge loading for diy stuff, dogs can have the boot for days out, bombproof reliability, pretty good stereo, supremely comfortable and they cost nothing to run.
Bit heavy on the juice but the cost to change to anything meaningfully better would cover a lot of petrol.
Plus newer ones got worse as they went on, simple as.


Mine has the R front bumper, XC70 egg crate grill and 850R Volans.
(Ancient pic from when I bought it but it looks the same these days )

I use one of these and it works really well. Not for phone calls but for streaming Spotify from my phone etc.

Excellent stuff. My father bought an R-reg S70 about nine months old back in the day. Same colour and wheels as your car, he kept it until it had about 175k on the clock. It had a very distinctive exhaust note, you can always tell an S70/V70 of this vintage around towns just by listening, sounded like an approaching mooing cow. Loved it. Would entertain a V70 myself, especially in this colour.

Nice Volvo OP. I thought I recognised the plate as I live 5mins round the corner from the guy. Noticed he has had a few cars recently on retrorides and also had a S70 up for sale as well.

I knew the drivers headrest was a tad grubby and have tried to avoid it, gave it a bit of a wipe this morning, wiped the middle (cif and a stiff brush) glad I avoided it.
Scrubbed the load area floor as well, drying in the sun
And then I discovered the rear seat armrest, what a brilliant idea.
