It all started when I was driving down the lanes to work on 2nd Jan, I encountered a van driving straight at me on a LH bend. I swerve hard left to avoid a head-on and impact the grass verge, spinning the car 180° -

It hurt, nothing broken. The van disappeared, never to be seen again.

Now don't get me wrong losing the C3 was no great loss to the automotive world, but it was my daily commuter so I set out to find a replacement quick smart. Criteria was simple - local (<20miles), as much MOT as possible and sub £1000 - the hunt began!

All of the usual sites were scoured, mainly bringing up small hatchbacks with poor/little or no MOT left. As it was mainly going to be me in the car size wasnt an issue.
A few viewings were made but none were suitable (read roadworthy) one seller even admitted that the pictures in the ad were 3 years old "of course it looks different!" Hmmm....

Anyhow, up popped a Laguna estate, sorry Sport Tourer, in full Dynamique spec.
It ticked all of the boxes and was twice the car, both in size & spec, of all the others I had looked at. MOT looked OK, nothing disastrous TBH, how bad could it be???
After giving the car a good drive and once over only two things stood out. The leather had come of the gear knob (£5) and the rear exhaust hangers had rusted through (£20/pair), as in silencer was on the floor, so a £50 discount was negotiated.

So £850 later I became the new owner of this;

The observant amongst you will have noticed it packs the mighty 150bhp 2.0dci unit which had fairly regular servicing and still pulls well, all of the electric toys still work - electric windows & mirrors, keyless entry, keyless go (discovered by accident!), auto xenon headlights, wipers etc...even the a/c blows icy cold.

So far I've put just over 1500 miles on it without major issue. The rear wiper doesn't always complete a full sweep and the upper engine mount rubber is starting to crack but is still solid.
I guess a previous owner has misplaced the SPORT portion of the Tourer. I can't find it anywhere.

I will try and keep this updated for those who are interested.

Cheers

I had a hatch of the same vintage with the 1.9dCi. I bought it at about 25k miles from a VW dealer, it was recently out of OEM warranty but VW gave me a year. I think it was 5.5k which was much lower than an equivalent Passat for example. I ran it for about 4 years and another 60k miles and it was a great car, practical, economical and reliable. Apparently this later shape had most of the reliability niggles sorted. My one is still running well over 100k miles according to the mot database. Cracking cars for the money.

Time for an update;

Rear brake discs and pads changed as I found the NSR disc was only 4.5mm thick! yikes (Min. is supposed to be 9.5mm...) The discs come complete with wheel bearings and the ABS ring;

Or they're supposed to. The first set of discs had the ABS rings missing and it took a week of 'discussions' with ECP to swap them for the correct parts. Anyway it's a simple job only needing basic tools, 36mm socket and a 280Nm torque wrench. Due to the never ending ECP sales I only paid £46 for pads and discs.

On Wednesday of this week BOTH front springs decided that they would snap at the same time! censored
My goto 'man' says that's it's a common fault and he was not surprised they had gone. That cost me £190 to sort as I was not doing that myself.

So far it's cost me 22p/mile but I was on furlough for 10 weeks which cut the mileage down by 1250.

It's due an oil change soon so I'll sort that along with the other filters (hopefully before the service light comes on because I have no idea how to turn it off!)

Apart from that it's been pretty uneventful. The MOT is due in November and my man says all looked good when he did the springs today. Fingers crossed!

So, it seems I did some damage to the NSR caliper when I changed over the brakes as I noticed some fluid on the inside of the wheel - £33 + an hour of my time sorted it out.

Slightly better news, the Lag went in for its MOT today (yes he does start early!) and passed with a few advisories;

My 'man' said that the brake pipe only has surface corrosion so I'll get this seen to once the weather gets warmer.

He said the NSF tyre was just on the legal limit and looked as if the tracking could be out. To be fair it has been pulling to the right ever since I had an argument with a pothole a few months back....

The rear sub frame bushes aren't as scary as they appear as I was told they've been replaced already and are just starting to show signs of wear. They should be fine for a good while yet but we will keep an eye on them.

After the MOT it's cost 17p/mile;

I'm happy with that!

Those bushes aren't that bad, with a £30 tool off ebay they can be done on the car without having to drop the subframe.

I had 4 of them, all of them needed those bushes changed at some point !

RenaultForums says otherwise but I'm more than happy with a £30 Ebay tool. Do you have a link?

I am familiar with both sites but I have never heard of either site referred to as that.

Cracking car OP and looks good value for the money.

Do these have a tendency to be unreliable in the electrical department? Just remember reading stories of French cars around this time constantly breaking and being a painful experience?

Nothing has failed, yet, but the boot switch has been temperamental on the odd occasion.

Overdue update;

The tracking turned out to be fine but the OSF wheel bearing was not! Not picked up on MOT though...

Anyway my 'man' wanted 2hrs +vat to replace so over to him it went. Turns out it was quicker than he though so only charged me 1.5hrs! Win!

Cost breakdown;

Cost per mile is still going the right way bounce
