I finally replaced my faithful 2003 Jaguar Super V8 with a newer barge.

I have always loved the W221 Facelift S Class since I was around 16, I told myself one day I would buy one. Years later, I have owned Jaguars and BMWs, but never a Mercedes- so I decided to follow my dream and buy one.

The 4.7 biturbo engine seemed like the pick of the bunch, much more power than the old 5.5, better economy and slightly cheaper tax. A Stage 1 remap takes the car from 435bhp and 700nm to around 510bhp and 800nm, nearly as much power as the 6.2 v8 and more torque!

I viewed a S500L variant with amazing spec, but sadly my gut feeling told me to walk away, as I found too many issues that could be expensive to get right. I started looking at the Coupe version of the S Class- the CL.

I am glad I waited, as soon as I saw it, it had too be mine. The seller had spent a lot of time making the car just right for sale, it had just been ceramic coated, 2x premium rear tyres, front brake pads, service and 12 months MOT.

The car is on a 61 plate, 84,000 miles and in amazing condition, bar the wheels. A very high specification:
MAGNETITE BLACK - METALLIC FINISH
REAR-VIEW CAMERA
PARKING GUIDANCE
AUTONOMOUS INT. CRUISE CONT. PLUS (DISTRONIC PLUS)
ADAPTIVE REAR INTERIOR LIGHT
ACTIVE BLIND SPOT ASSIST
ACTIVE LANE KEEPING ASSIST
DRIVING PACKAGE
LEATHER STEERING WHEEL WITH TRIM INSERT
UNIVERSAL TELEPHONY PACKAGE
FRONT SEAT CLIMATE CONTROL
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 7-SPEED
HEAD RESTRAINTS,REAR, PNEUMAT.FOLDING UP/DOWN
HEATED STEERING WHEEL
EXCLUSIVE LEATHER TRIM
TRAFFIC SIGN RECOGNITION
UNIVERSAL COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACE (UCI)
EXCLUSIVE LEATHER - BLACK/ANTHRACITE
COMAND DVD APS WITH NAVIGATION
DIGITAL RADIO STANDARD DAB (DIGI. AUDIO BROADC.)
ROLLER BLIND, ELECTRIC, FOR REAR WINDOW
AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAM SWITCH (IHC)
HEADLAMP WITH ILS, LEFT-HAND TRAFFIC
ROOF LINER, ALCANTARA GREY
TRIM PIECES - WOOD ASH BLACK
AMG STYLING PACKAGE-FRONT SPOILER, SIDE SKIRT
PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM
DVD CHANGER
TV-TUNER DIGITAL TO ANALOG
FRONT PASSENGER ENTERTAINMENT
AMG SPORTS PACKAGE
LIGHT PACKAGE
FRONT ENTERTAINMENT PACKAGE

And the best view...

Interior:

A lovely place to sit and enjoy the miles. I am very impressed with the way the nappa leather responds to a clean with just a damp cloth, usually black leather looks greasy.

As I am classified as a key-worker, I look foward to driving it everyday to work the next few days.

Popping in from the Barges thread where you gave us the preview. Really lovely purchase, high spec and top condition by looks of it.
Fellow key worker too so I still commute most days, fine weather and sparse traffic means I'm taking the SL55 most days. Roof down. I'm sure some people think I'm out for a jolly but I carry the paperwork and ID for those that need to know.
I'd be tempted to sell it and buy a CL though depending on your experience with yours. They offer tremendous VFM.
Health to drive, essential travel only of course.

Lovely car Alec. I wonder if I wait a few years if these 4.7s might come in to my budget?

Anyway, following your thread with interest.

A CL500 is a twin turbo? Didn’t know that.

Loving that Alec, what have you got planned for it? As we all know, you don't leave them standard for long!

Not normally a fan of black with black but that looks so right in this instance. Superb purchase and will watch this with interest.

Soooo, I’m guessing you don’t want to borrow the 7 for a bit anymore? laugh

Congrats on what looks to be a lovely purchase - knowing you, what’s the OEM+ plans, or is it too soon yet?

Lovely car, watching with interest. The brother in law of a lad I work with is selling his CL. it’s very tempting. Are there many known issues with them?

Slightly wary of what bills a £90k plus car could throw at me.

Link to his below, I think it’s the same model although maybe not as well specced. happy to be corrected if not.

My favourite shape CL in a lovely spec. I'd love to drive/own a CL600 at some point, even if it could be potentially financially ruinous laugh

Cheers, seems like there is love for the W216.

DSLiverpool, only the 2011 facelift models got the twin turbo V8, before they were N/A

Tobinen, hopefully not for a while, as I would loose a lot of money wink

Harrykul, yes it won't stay standard for long. If it wasn't for the lockdown, I would be getting it remapped and exhaust opened up

Prinny, thanks again for your kind offer of test driving the 760li, but the more I thought about it, the less practical it was

TVR-Stu, didn't want black interior either, but I am warming to it

Markstev0, I was that example when doing my search. Looks like a nice example, virtually identical externally. The lack of upgraded leather (no alcantara headliner I am guessing) and no cooled seats meant it was not for me. Very low miles though and good price.

A little 'quirk' discovered on the exhuast finishers today when I took one off to clean:

After much searching on AMG exhausts, I realised it is the same as the A45 AMG.

The car has factory wireless headphones and remote to allow the passenger to watch TV or a DVD while the car is in motion, while the driver is for example using the satnav

The interior Ambient lighting has 3 colours, I prefer Polar, but sadly not as bright!

Hi Alec

Congratulations on your new CL.

Not sure if you have seen my thread on the same model...
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Might help you plan a little... a few other CL owners have contributed also...

These are without doubt wonderful cars..

Best of luck with it.

Nice car my uncle also has a 4.7TT CL500 with a map X Pipe & direct replacement filters he's at 516bhp & 598 lb ft this is his second 500 he had the older 5.5.

My dad is also on his second CL63 too they're great cars & make you feel special I have an E500 with the same drivetrain as yours & even though mine is lovely you still feel like you're stepping up a class when you get in a CL.

Enjoy the car.

Alec,

Wow, you do love a large engined, black, coupe!!

Brilliant car. I tried a CL63 at one time as a replacement car for my daily 911 when my son was born but ended up settling on a W205 C63. I regret that a little now as I suspect I would have hung onto the CL longer than i did the C63.

All the very best with the car. Given your meticulous thought process on owning, modifying and looking after cars in general I'll definitely be looking in on this thread as well as the M6 one.

p.s. don't forget to call me first if you tire of the M6. I'm moving back into town soon so the one reason i sold the damn thing to you is being removed! laugh

I'll be crude and ask how much that set you back? It's a nice place to be and I have a lot of love for CLS's
