Viper with a few more bhp than standard
Discussion
Following my two Subaru threads and my BAC Mono thread, in which I hinted about a Viper, here it is.
As it is in the US and mods happen to it without me knowing or with little detail, I am not so up to speed with it as i am with the Subarus and now the Mono.
So it will not be in the detail of the other cars.
So back in 2017 I started to get an itch for a V8. When I talk about V8 I dont mean M3, M5, E63 rather an Aussie or US muscle car V8. Looked at old modified Monaros, Toranas, Commodores and Falcons and there were many that I liked. But then i though of looking at US and seeing the Hellcat got me thinking. After a few failed attempts in sourcing one, I turned my attention to Vipers. Made some good contacts through some workshops and they looked at the cars for me depending where they were located.
So a deal was struck on a Viper ACR. 8.4lV10 645 bhp. Very understressed engine. Carbon brakes and lots of aero as it was designed to beat the Europeans on track. The idea was to get a nice head and cam package and leave as is and bring to Cyprus. First mods were a 9L stroker package:
Head/Cam
- Custom Spec Cam
- CNC Ported And Polished Cylinder Heads
- Upgraded Valves
- Conical Spring
- Titanium Retainers
- Bronze Valve Guides
- Vario-Cam Delete Kit
- Upgraded Johnson Lifters
Engine:
- Custom 9L Crank
- Custom 9L Piston/Rod Combo
- Rod Bearing Service
- Reworking of the the oiling system
- Headers And Custom Exhaust With Billet V-Bands
Nice 785whp.....
However a visit over to Texas where the work was being done put paid to that idea. This is the land of 1000bhp 911 turbos as a starter, 1500hp GTRs, and twin turbo Lambos with over 2000 hp and of course twin turbo Vipers.
So a decision was made to twin turbo it and being a stroker package power outputs woudl be higher than doing the work to a stock 8.4l as per below whp packages
Packages started at a nice 1100whp on pump gas with twin 67mm turbos (1300 on C16). This could be done on a stock motor but obviously with a lot of anciliairy work such as machined crank, bearings and upgrades to fuelling. A lot of work required from the point of view of going turbo on a NA engine.
1600whp with 72mm turbos. This requires a built moror and although power on pump fuel is only 1150 it jumps to 1600 on C16
1800whp with same 72mm turbos but with some extra engine work.
2000 whp with 76mm turbos. This was the highest power package available. 1350whp on pump and you guessed it 2000 on C16. With the stroker package 2100whp was on the cards. So this was installed.
Custom Twin Billet 76mm 42R Turbo Chargers

- Upgraded Push Rods
- CNC Ported Race Heads
- Titanium Intakes Valves, Inconel Exhaust Valves
- Copper Seats
- Jesel Rocker Arms With Steel Exhaust Rockers
You may notice standard block. It is rated for 3000bhp before issues may start.

So this was a very nice spec and dynoed at 2100whp on C16. This is beyond comprehension. The engine is so tractable and the Motec is an amazing thing in controlling traction and feeding in just enough power to keep it from spinning up too much. Tyres were also changed to R888s as they found that they were the best for traction.

The street videos (in Mexico) are at 1400whp on pump gas.
I have to find some more dyno videos for tomorrow.

Monaro - not a bad idea
Viper - pretty cool
Viper ACR - really quite interesting with the suspension and aero
Head/cam - sounds great to make it more revvy / characterful
9.0L stroker kit - surely getting a bit excessive now ?
Twin turbos putting out 2,000 hp - this is for a fighter plane, right??
Actually on that last point, it's interesting that a third of the power is unlocked by running on the high-octane fuel - I've heard it said that our ability to refine high-octane fuels was one of the key factors in winning the air war in WW2, and this fits with that.

Wow! Where is the car now? Surely with 2100bhp on Cyprus, one jab of the throttle and you’d be the other side of the island!
Still in US. Will bring it over in a few years. Have the slow 600bhp odd Subarus and the Mono to keep me busy. Yes it will be interesting as not the wide open spaces of Texas and Mexico..

That’s mental! I can’t imagine what WOT feels like but I’ve always wondered with these massive horsepower tunner cars though what the drivability is like.
The beauty of the Viper is being 8.4l and now stroked it has massive torque as well. If I recall with 1300whp it also has 1100ft lbs torque and over 1600 on C16. So even though turbos are quite large the engine is not struggling to spin them up. A great starting point. Also the Motec is the magic here. It controls the power delivery based on several sensors. Wheelspin is kept to a minimum and it digs and goes. I believe also the chassis design is a contributing factor.

Yes there is a heap of power tucked away waiting for the high octane fuel. We are now seeing some good results on e85. Closer to the C16. Probably right about the fuel and WW2 though. Viper - pretty cool
