Evening All.

This could be a short or long progress thread, depending how I end up feeling about the car by the end of June. Initial thoughts are it seems too boy racer for me at 32, but I think I need to spend some time with it so it's insured, taxed and keeping the shed car until end of June, until I decide which car I want to keep - if this is just an itch I wanted to scratch or something I want to keep, cherish and watch the value rise maybe.

Background

So back in October, I decided to buy my own car again and ended up going down the shed route. I ended up with this https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&.... Recently one my neighbours got a new car (Peugeot 206 GTi 180) and another neighbour has a Focus ST MK2.

The more I started to see their cars and hear there nice exhausts, I felt like i was missing out slightly and coupled with the fact my job role won't the same travelling to client sites after COVID19, I started to look at hot (or maybe warm hatches in the name of the car) that I could rewind back to my younger days and enjoy something with a nice exhaust and that is a go kart. I looked at Renault Clios 172/182 and also Focus ST but was out of my ranges, so I thought I'd consider a MK6 Fiesta ST.

After trailing the websites last week, I found a blue one on Autotrader which was an 07 plate with 90k on the clock - seller had it up at £2,6k with all wheels needing refurb, 2 dents in it and it's been stood still for a year - I offered him £2k and he politely told me to do one, so I told him good luck with the sale and my search continued.

On Saturday, I managed to find another one which had been slightly modified and based down in Birmingham. The guy selling was a small time trader, told me the car was (he thought) on standard ST springs, had the backbox cut out and was in good overall condition with decent tread on the tyres. We exchanged a few messages over the weekend, plus videos and agreed a deal on Monday afternoon of £2,100 for a car he originally had advertised at £2,675 back in April. He said he had a mate who could deliver the car from Brum to Bradford for £140, but I went on the Shiply website yesterday morning and found my own guy to do it for £105. I accepted his quote at 8.51am and car was sat on my drive at 5.30pm yesterday - amazing service!!

Anyway, step forward the car;

Fiesta ST MK6

85,000mls
MOT until 7th Feb 2021 (although I question the MOT given the tyres and dodgy rear caliper, although it has been sat still for 3 months).
8 stamps in the service history (I did a lot checking history, matching up with MOTs etc)
6 owners (not ideal, but oh well)

Spec Wise

1. It's been lowered, not sure on make of springs yet but around 25 - 30mm
2. It has an exhaust on it, but back box isn't missing - just the tip
3. I think it's decatted and could be straight through, but need to check as it's quite drony at 2k
4. It has a Collins Performance sticker on it but no evidence of engine work

A few pictures for you to look at;

Looks good.
That's a lot of performance for the money/age.

Thanks both.

I agree the price is decent for the power and overall condition of the car, considering it's one of the last to roll off the production lines.

26mpg is killing me compared the to Skoda though lol

I used to have one of these with a few mountune goodies.

They are good little cars, they drive well. Neither me or friends have had any major issues with them and a mate runs a highly modified one.

Decent suspension and tyres does transform the ride / handling and is definitely worth while rainsports are a good tyre on these if your not wanting to spend loadsamoney! Check your springs as well they might be alright with a shock upgrade.

26mpg sounds about right, I don't recall ever getting much higher than that.

Thanks for that, that is good to know.

26 around town I presume? What was it like when you got on the open road? I was hoping to see 28 - 30 around town, 38 on a long run were my predictions that I'd be happy with.

That was mixed usage, commute used to be c. 10 miles A road and 5 miles town.

I always thought it was a little heavy on juice for the performance on offer but most of the n/a 2 litre hot hatches are the same. (Although my focus gave around 36mpg)

Another positive is it's a ford, parts are cheap and anyone will work on them.
We now have a Mk7.5 and have worked through several mk5 zs's and the mk6 ST so none of them put me off haha.

I really like these, i had a 1.8sri corsa when i was 18 (12 years ago now!) and these were pretty much my arch nemesis on the road laugh

They've aged well and i'd happily have one as a cheap daily to enjoy, i've thought about it a few times funnily enough!

I get 40mpg on the dot on my work commute of A and B roads, mine has been remapped by Mountune also. I never do any real amount of town driving but I know the mpg does suffer massively in town!

Thanks mate smile

I am wondering if my FIesta has had more work done, but I am not 100% sure. I have a sticky caliper at the back so will be getting that sorted today probably.

Does the idle sound lumpy at all? You might have cams in it if that's the case, I know you can take the rocker cover off to visually inspect them but it's easier just to listen for them - the engine is pretty smooth at idle normally.

Looks in pretty decent nick.

They always drove pretty well (I was at Ford when they were launched) and drove a few of the Mountune ones as well (165 and 200bhp versions) and they were good fun. The Mountune intakes sometimes appear on eBay.

Wheels look in decent condition from the photos

The Mountune inlet manifolds (for the 200) are fetching strong money these days though unfortunately, £1.5k and up! Mine's a 165 and is plenty for a commuter really, with it not having the cams changed it has better low-end than a 185 and better fuel economy too.

No idle seems OK to be honest, I just feel it seems quick for a 150bhp car but maybe that is because I haven't driven a n/a petrol engine since my Saxo days.

The wheels are in good nick - front passenger one is a bit kerbed and centre cap on drivers rear is a bit damaged, but apart from that - they seem good wheels to be honest.

I actually meant the induction kits... but yes, the manifolds go for serious money. There do seem to be some replicas about though.

I had a red one of these back in 2007 and ran it for 3 years.

It's the only car I have ever regretted selling and I still feel like I have unfinished business with them.

Mine was sat on Spax 45mm lowering springs.
Racing Puma spacers which pushed the rear wheels out to the perfect position with the Spax springs.
A larger bore flexi pipe (standard ones are quite restricted)
Induction kit
mongoose rolled tip exhaust (its gotta be a mongoose on these cars!)
Front strut brace and custom made rear strut brace.

By 2007 standards it went really well and handled lovely.

I really want another one now!

My DC2 is maybe mid 20’s overall- probably 32ish on a run.

Any hot hatch driven properly won’t ever return anything like decent figures- but then you don’t buy such a car to potter about in...

I had a 2008 Performance Blue one a few years back; I specifically went for one of the last for the better stereo.

It was the only car I've ever modified: H&R springs, 12.5mm spacers on the rear, aftermarket multispoke alloys and a K&N cone filter. The filter didn't offer any noticeable improvement on performance, but it did resolve a stalling issue it had. In the summer, when the car had been parked in direct sunlight for hours, it would start fine, but die within seconds. So I replaced the torturous air intake with a simple K&N cone filter, and it cured the problem completely. It also made it sound a little better.

I'd have another if the roads weren't so bad around where I live, I value my comfort more these days!
