Neith's Honda Integra Type-R (DC5)
Discussion
In around 2013 I imported my first car from Japan, a S15 Silvia that I imported via DCY Europe. While the car wasn't perfect, I loved the process of bringing a car over from Japan and knew I'd end up doing it again at some point. You can check out the S15 thread here, but I sold it back in 2016. After a few more cars (a frankly terrible Clio 197 and my current car, an RX-8 that has been reliable (!?) ) I decided it was time to import again.
I decided I wanted to use a different importer and had heard a lot of good things about Torque GT. Despite them being at the opposite end of the country I figured it'd be worth it for the right car. So, what car to buy? I loved my S15 despite all the problems and I've always wanted to own a R33 Skyline, but after inquiring about rough prices I decided against both. S15s have almost doubled in price since I last imported one and while I could afford to get a R33 GTS-T I wasn't sure I really wanted one (I honestly wanted a GT-R but no chance with the prices on those now!). Most people know that nearly anything from the 90s-early 2000s and Japanese has gone stratospheric in value in recent years but I knew I had to own something from that era that I'd be happy keeping for a while.
I've always had a liking for Honda Type-Rs, and owned a EP3 years ago. I realised I'd never tried an Integra, but decided against a DC2. While I love the cars, this will be getting used as a daily and I wasn't sure a DC2 would be a great idea for that. So with that in mind, I decided to have Torque GT look for a DC5.
I think I'd had around 6 cars inspected, some of which we bid on (and lost out on). A few weeks passed of nothing but mega-mileage grade R cars and I was honestly starting to wonder if I'd be able to get a decent one. One morning Darren from Torque GT contacted me to say we'd missed out on a black DC5, but that he had some details of a blue one. After a few blurry photos (why does no-one in Japan have a decent camera?) the car looked clean and I said I was interested. It turned out that this car had already been inspected and bought by Torque GT, who were going to sell it in their showroom. They decided to offer it to me first, which I jumped on after seeing how clean it looked!
(Apologies for potato quality photos, blame the auction!)

It's a 2001 pre-facelift car from the first month of DC5 production with 79,000 miles in Arctic Blue Pearl. It has some wear on the Recaros (try finding a DC5 that doesn't...) but is completely standard. Unfortunately no C-Pack, but considering that only added tints, electric folding mirrors and a rear washer jet/wiper I'm not too fussed.
Because Torque GT had bought this a little while ago it's already in transit and is due to land in the UK at the end of the month. The downside is that the DVLA are backed up with registrations due to the pandemic, so it might be a while before I can actually pick it up! Really excited though and glad I managed to secure one before these are the next car to double in price...
I'll update once I've collected the car, but so far the only things I want to change are the side indicators (amber indicators date the car badly) and install an Android Auto headunit. The seats probably need some attention at some point but I know the blue Recaros are a nightmare to get replacement fabric for! Honestly after that I doubt I'll do too much to it. Maybe an intake and exhaust but I want to keep the car looking mostly stock and then just get out and drive the thing.

Use my DC2 almost daily- they only become horrible when people try to tune them with rock hard coilovers & the like.
Left standard and freshened up they are perfectly usable day to day.
Anyone who complains about the noise or short gearing etc etc should really stop looking at VTEC type R’s & go look at safe & sensible Golf GTi’s.
Good luck with the 5- nearly as good as a 2

Good to know about the DC2, I think I find the interior of the DC5 a nicer place to be (as a daily) but it's good to hear from an owner of a DC2 to set the record straight re: gearing etc
Believe me, I have zero interest in a Golf GTI.
Yes it’s a common misconception. I’ve done nearly 60k in DC2’s now & I’ve always found them perfectly comfortable & not nearly as harsh/unrefined as some make out. It’s lightweight & high revving so a certain amount of noise is understandable. All offset by the pin-sharp chassis & dynamics. It’s what they are all about...Believe me, I have zero interest in a Golf GTI.
Finally time to update this!
After months of delays (thanks, COVID
) the DC5 arrived today! Big thanks to all at Torque GT who have been amazing for the entire import process.

The car even came with the original Japanese documentation / owner's manual! I've only had chance to take it for a quick drive because of lockdown but for a 19 year old car it feels very well looked after. Can't wait for lockdown to ease so I can finally take it for a good run.
Plans for the car are very little for now; it's in such original condition and it seems a shame to modify it much! I definitely want to replace the orange side indicators with clear ones as I feel the orange badly dates the car. Aside from that I'd like to install an Android Auto headunit (I will be using this as a daily and it currently has a 6-CD and minidisc player
). I do plan on keeping OEM bits though so if I ever want to go back to completely standard I can.
I'm also trying to track down a parcel shelf. For those who don't know, the parcel shelf was an option with these. Because my car doesn't have the rear tinted glass, you can see straight into the boot which is...less than ideal for security. So, the plan is to either find a parcel shelf (which are stupidly rare) or potentially get the rear glass tinted. I personally prefer the look without tints, but showing the world the contents of the boot probably isn't great
Honestly now I just can't wait until I can take it for a proper drive.

I've now had the Integra for a few weeks so I've had a bit of time to get used to it. Still haven't been able to take it out for a good blast (first priority once lockdown is eased!). It has given me time to have a thorough look over the car though.
- I've had to order a paint touch up pen already. 2 days after I got it, a person walking past the car caught it with her handbag buckle. The paint on these is incredibly thin, so it went right down to the metal. Mostly sorted again now and I've also filled in a few of the stone chips the car has picked up.
- The CD player unfortunately doesn't read any CDs. Not sure if the CD loader is broken or just dirty, so first plan is to try and clean it out. This isn't a huge problem for me though, I plan on changing the CD player for an Android Auto headunit anyway.
- Some of the badging (the red H badge on the front and the Type R badge on the back) is a bit worn so I plan on ordering some new badges as you can still get hold of them.
- Headlights are a bit sun faded so this week I'm going to wet sand and polish them.
Aside from that it really doesn't need a lot doing to it. Impressions so far (from the very limited amount I've been able to drive it...) are that it does the daily duties pretty well. The Recaros are really comfortable (a little awkward to get out of without touching the bolsters but it's doable, if a little undignified
), the boot is huge even without folding the rear seats down and it's a nice enough place to be. I can't really comment on the MPG so far; I'm still on my first tank and it's been almost entirely low speed city driving, which isn't ideal. The few times I've been able to open the car up it's felt great. The VTEC transition seems much more noticeable than my old EP3, maybe because of the reduced sound deadening in the Integra. This being my first FWD car with a LSD it's amazing how much you feel the LSD pull you around a bend. Such a shame Honda never fitted one to the UK EP3.
The only things I'm not keen on so far are the aforementioned thin paint (seems like any slight brush against the paint scratches it!) and the shocking state of the roads here means that the ride is very crashy at the moment, though that's the fault of the local council rather than the car! It does get a bit of unwanted attention (mainly from young lads in Golf GTIs), but I expected that when I bought a car with a spoiler the size of a coffee table

Quick update for the Integra!
With us finally getting a couple of days' sunshine I gave the car a wash and wax. The paintwork came up better than I thought it would!

There's a few things with the car that date it, so I've made a start on updating a few bits. My plan for this was always to keep hold of as much OEM stuff as possible so I can revert it whenever I feel like.
I'll be ordering a new rear Type R badge as the paint is flaking on it and I want to replace the side indicators for clear ones. While I wait for those I decided to get a few Spoon parts.
The OEM rear view mirror looked like it was starting to discolour so I've replaced it with a Spoon blue wide-angle mirror. It does make me feel like I'm reversing a limo every time I look through it though because of the angle

The OEM shift knob was pretty beaten up (I'm guessing the previous owner wore a wedding ring or something so there were scratches all over it). I decided to swap it out for a Spoon billet aluminium shift knob as I wanted something that worked well in the interior and I was worried the duracon shifter would feel too light. Not had chance to use the car since fitting it so I'll report back on this once I've had time to adjust to it. I love the look of it though.

I did get one of the Spoon brake fluid reservoir covers but that's not worth taking a photo of
I'm hoping that once trackdays start up again I can actually see what the car is all about...

I took the Integra to get some groceries a couple of days ago, which it's surprisingly good at with a huge boot. When I got back to it in the car park, I realised the Integra badge was missing from the boot lid. No signs of any vandalism but the badge was gone, leaving a horrible black sticky adhesive on the boot. I put it down to badge theft but did wonder how much use an Integra badge would be to someone.
I spent a while getting rid of the adhesive, which was really stubborn. If anyone else needs to do this, I had the best results using WD-40 on the adhesive and then using hot (not boiling) water and an old credit card to scrape the rest off. You do need to be careful not to damage the paintwork though. Thankfully, a couple of places still sell the OEM Integra badge so I ordered a new one from Tegiwa Imports. £30 for a badge feels like daylight robbery but I'm glad it wasn't the front Honda badge (which is around £85!)
Fast forward a couple of days and I park at work. As I went to grab something out of the boot, something caught my eye in the grass verge next to the parking bay:

Very lucky to have found the badge, unfortunately I'd already bought a new one though. I have no idea how it's fell off, but the car is nearly 20 years old so I'm guessing the adhesive just gave up. I'm just glad it hasn't been theft!
Since I'd already ordered the new badge, I decided to just replace the old one and keep it as a spare. I think I'm happy enough with how it looks:

I guess I should probably be ready for the Type-R badge to drop off next
Car otherwise is running great; I do want to get it a major service soon as I'm not sure when the valve clearances were checked last. There are some minor issues with the paint (very slight lacquer peel on the roof) but I'm not too concerned. The car was never meant to be a garage queen and it's used as a daily so it's bound to pick up marks here and there. Hopefully in a few months I'll be swapping out the OEM stereo for an Android Auto unit but it's not a priority at the minute, even if all I can get on the stereo is Radio 2
Edit: Update on the Spoon gear knob: I initially didn't like the feel of it (weight feels about the same as OEM, but the shape of it took some getting used to). Now that I've used it for a couple of weeks, I'm much happier with it. I've also finally gotten used to the wide-angle rear mirror, which I'd also recommend.

Very nice, they do look fine in the blue,Champ White is lovely but it is nice to see them in something different and to be fair from the pics it looks to come up very well.Loads of aftermarket stuff available as you know, and if you're keeping the OEM stuff then you can easily resort back if need be later.
I dealt with Darren at Torque as well when looking for an Accord, ended up buying one of their ex-customer cars in 2020 that by lucky fate became available after the guy had owned it from import by them in 2018 traded it back in while we were still looking at the Japanese auctions. He'd added a lot of aftermarket bits but all top quality stuff, and it came with full documentation and the OEM suspension and airbox/strut braces etc which is handy too.Its a 2005 model. And as it was already here,I didn't have to wait for the DVLA process either!
MY mate Chris has had his DC5 in CW for around 10 years now and he still loves it.It was him that put me onto the Accord in the first place,as I needed a 4 door car but something with a bit of 'punch' about it,and the Accord fitted the bill perfectly. It shares the same running gear as your DC5,the K20A with 6 speed box and LSD,it has the RBC inlet manifold though and revised rear suspension, different from the Integras.
If I was after another 2 door car (though I already have a 1980's Celica for weekend fun) then a DC5 would be right up there.Yours looks really nice, sure it'll do you well and just make sure you do get the clearances done and keep on top of the servicing.
My Accord Euro-R CL7 in Pearl White. They come in a blue too which is also very nice.

It's been another couple of months with the DC5 and so far it's running great.
In May I finally got to take the car on track at my local track, Teesside Autodrome for an evening session. Unfortunately the weather was terrible all night with torrential rain that made conditions...interesting
Only managed to capture a little footage; I was probably the slowest thing on track (this is only my 2nd track day ever) and I really wasn't keen on binning it! Still a great night and the car performed brilliantly. I did suffer from a little brake fade but the car isn't running uprated pads or discs. The way the diff grabs the front end and pulls it inwards on tighter corners was really impressive (if a strange sensation in a FWD car). Definitely want to get back on track again at some point! Special mention has to go to one of my work colleagues who fabricated a GoPro camera mount that hooks through the passenger Recaro seat.
DC5 Track Night at Teesside Autodrome
I did have one slight excursion; I think my rear right tyre touched the kerbs and because of how wet it was it just threw the back of the car round. Thankfully I wasn't going quick on that part of the track but it woke me up for sure
DC5 Spin
With the weather getting warmer I've been focusing on getting a couple of jobs done on the car. I gave it a decent wash and plan to spend more time on it this week.

I've also replaced the cabin filters. These were apparently checked when it was imported, but they were absolutely filthy! Nice easy 5 minute job to replace them; I used genuine Honda filters which cost around £28 for the two needed.
Next job was to try and clear up the headlights, which are noticeably faded particularly on the driver's side. I spent a while wetsanding them before using a Meguiar's Plast-X kit. The passenger side light has came up quite well, but there's still a noticeable yellowing to the driver's side light so I may have to look into new headlights at some point. Thankfully, you can still get hold of them but they're not particularly cheap. I didn't bother to photograph the result as I'm still not happy with it yet.
You can see the headlight issue on this photo from Teesside Autodrome:

So far though the car has been almost flawless (I think all I've had to replace since January is a rear light bulb and a fuse for the 12V socket). I'm currently averaging around 25mpg with a decent amount of VTEC per tank, which I don't think is too bad. The car is still on the standard ECU, I've heard that Hondata K-Pro cars can sometimes get better MPG though. To be honest, I didn't buy the car for MPG and it's super-economical anyway compared to my old RX-8
Loving the car; it's not something I see often, it's fairly economical as a bonus and it's also really practical. Now I know it's also great on the track too!

Lovely car OP!
I bought myself one as a "daily" just before xmas after wanting one for years and I must say im not disappointed. Must be one of the best cars i've driven.
The issue is, it was always a "6 monther" and I was going to ship it on to change for something else i'd lusted for; the issue is that I like it too much but cannot justify a fourth car in the house... first world problems!
I viewed an Artic blue one with blue interior myself, but the was swayed by the practicality of a black interior so ended up with CW / Black combo.

Looking good! If I were you I’d take some of the rear trim off and get the sound deadening foam that’s in a plastic bag out of the rear arches. Just increases chances of rot and that’s their weak point. Also make sure you give the chassis a really good coat of protective stuff for our roads. Japanese cars were not prepared as they don’t use salt on the roads there.
My DC5 was imported 2009 and this wasn’t done and it shows, a lot! Still it’s a track car so not too worried.
