Hi,

Bored in lockdown so thought I’d put some details of my current garage on here to pass the time.

Last week I upgraded my 640d M Sport to a San Marino Blue M6 Competition Pack, so far I’m very happy! Here is the new one:

Here is my previous 640d after I had modified it slightly:

I had upgraded a few things to the 640d such as dechrome everything including door handles, side vents, grill etc making it look like a Black Park car but all OEM. Carbon BMW badges + M6 rear lip spoiler also added. I’d had the wheels done in gloss black by a firm in Bham too. I was happy with the looks and it looked a lot more modern that its 2012 production date would suggest IMO.

Also had it remapped to circa 400BHP & 750 Torques so it went pretty well. I’d recommend a remap to any 640d owners, it transformed the engine and I had zero issues with it.

I had this car for nearly 4 years, normally I change every 1-2 years but this BMW was just so good.

The problem was that I was looking at the classifieds every day, getting itchy feet and having had a rough few months on medical grounds I wanted to reward myself for my efforts and get something a bit newer and more special.

On the list were Aston Martin DB9 facelift, Porsche 911, S63 AMG, R8, Bentley CGT V8 or V8S.

This Agate Grey(I think, could have been Singapore Grey tho....) M6 none comp pack came up at Sytner local to me so I went and test drove it:

I don’t like Main Dealers, they don’t care and they’ll take in anything in PX IMO. It’s just a number game but I did want to test it. I was underwhelmed, handled a bit like my 640d, brakes were great and engine felt like it lacked low down torque to me, coming from my mapped one with 750NM it just didn’t feel like much of an improvement. Condition was poor although Sytner said they would rectify everything I just didn’t feel like it was a good buy so said goodbye.

I liked the idea of something a bit more special than a BMW, having owned loads of them but when you put them up against the likes of Aston and Bentley you pay 40% more and the tech is a few years behind in them. V8S and DB9 were looking like a 60k purchase and I like to buy my cars for cash, I don’t finance not that there is anything wrong with it, just personal preference. The R8 is a two seater @ £50k for the V10, and its an Audi, I’m going off them more and more. The S63AMG still holding £40k + and I’m not a huge Merc man tbh, in fact its a car I’ve not owned and I’ve had most things over the years!!

So I was being draw back to 5 year old M6s but my research suggested I needed a competition pack for the extras and the different driving style. Plus I’m looking at £35k which I thought was £22.5k cash and my 640d, given the pandemic, economic uncertainty moving forward I was far more comfortable at this number and I did want all the latest tech which BM cram into these cars.

For a bit of context into the car choice and type of vehicle, this is my current fleet of transport:

Cayenne S 2014
|https://thumbsnap.com/zbTV9mAr[/url]

Me the Mrs and out Rottie love this car, it’s brilliant. We’ve all camped in it, it runs us up and down the country in none COVID times and is an exceptional family car. It handles well for a 4x4, much better than my old range rovers and X5. Its luxurious, takes 4 people anywhere in absolute comfort and I take it to the tip. Good on fuel too! Expensive to maintain though but because of how capable it is I don’t mind throwing the money at it. Cost me about £2k last year for context. The Mrs drives this day to day and she test drove a 2018 Range Sport on Thursday and said she prefers her Porsche still.

Suzuki GSXR 750 in Bentley Matte Frost Grey with numerous mods:

This thing is mental, puts a smile on my face just looking at it and its absolutely rapid. Had a GSXR600 before and wanted to keep the chassis but wanted the power of a thou, this Gixxer750 had been tuned up to GSXR100 power but on the smaller chassis so handles brilliantly still. Don’t ride it much, getting older it scares me a bit more than it once did but I don’t think I’ll ever sell it, unless I have to for financial reasons.

Yamaha Waverunner with an R1 engine

This is just my motorbike but for the water, I think its got 160bhp and will do about 65mph which feels like 130MPH on the road. Puts a smile on my face again and lets me explore the coast line in Devon from a different perspective. I love being on the water even just trickling around Torbay looking at the boats on a warm day.

So back to the M6 Comp Pack purchase. I could run a 2 seater but having had them before there were times I was left frustrated when say 3 of us were going for lunch and you’d want to take the Aston but couldn’t due to the extra person... So it had to be 4 seater...

Both look great. I fancy a 640D as my next daily. Not sure if a bit big for me though.

In what sense, actual size or the feel of it when driving? They are big but they feel smaller when driving them, handles excellent in M Sport guise, I cannot be more positive about them and they are exceptional VFM too.

When I first got it it felt big but you quickly get used to it!

Keeping my eye out for M6s on AutoTrader, eBay Motors and here I spotted this Comp Pack come up at a dealership thats operated for years close to Stratford that had always sold high end, sports & luxury cars so drove half an hour to take a look at it in the flesh. Pulled up and immediately saw it parked outside and loved the colour and how it looked with the black details and satin black wheels.

Car was immaculate, FBMWSH, 26k on the clock - Much better condition than the grey one I’d seen at Sytner a few months before.

HUD, Harmon Kardonn, Lane Assist, Cruise, Alcantara Steering Wheel, Adaptive LED headlights and loads of other features that come standard in M6s. Dealer had the original build sheet and it seemed to me like it had everything I needed.

The dealer knew the previous owner and had a good knowledge of the car. Being a smaller independent who self finance their stock and self warranty too, I was confident that the vehicle was in a good mechanical condition as well as cosmetic. I took the car out for an hour long test drive to try it on a range of different roads to get a feel for it.

It drove like a different car to the standard M6, no body roll, sharper response, more low down torque. It felt quite racey and hid its size brilliantly. Devastating power when you can get the traction down which at this time of ear is hard but even acting down country lanes at 60mph it felt so balanced and planted, with zero under steer. I loved it and knew I was having it so went back and did a deal.

That looks very smart.

Who did the map on your 640d out of interest? Seems like some pretty good power from it.

Forget the company name but have the guys number saved in my contacts as Enda, he’s well known in the Midlands BMW scene and had worked on my mates 335d wagon so I was just passed his mobile number. Feel free to DM me on here and I’ll reply with it, don’t want to post it on public thread without his approval.

Great guy, very knowledgeable talked me through what he thought was safe gains and did some trick bits on the idrive opening up hidden menus, sports displays etc etc.

San Merino blue is a fabulous colour. It looks good on all cars.

The M6 looks cracking, I really like this era 6 series. It looked good when launched and still looks good now. I was very tempted by a 640d but decided they were a bit big, shame though because they’re a bargain really.

Popper to TH Boller a few times. I have family in Chipping Norton. In normal times it would be breakfast at Caffeine & Machine followed by a mooch at TH Boller.

Here's a previous vehicle I owned a few years ago, a 911TT X50 pack:

Up until I got the M6 this was the fastest road car I'd had. Launched brilliantly with the 4WD and didn't stop pulling, had about 470bhp at the time and handled on rails too. Used it as a daily through snow, ice, rain and sun, never failed to impress. I should have kept it as they are going up in value!!!

Rear seats pretty unusable for anything but kids or pets but at least they are there, we've squeezed 4 adult men in before but you wouldn't want to go far. 3 people with back seat passenger sat behind front seat passenger was optimum, well for me driving anyway.

Reliable car, biggest bill was £750 in about 2 years........

Getting a few bits done on the M6CP, plates on, number plate plinth removed. Competition badge added to rear...

Wasn’t happy with the chrome on the side vents:

Carbon ones £500!
Gloss black about £275

My mate removed mine and sprayed them gloss black to match the grille:

Here they are on:

£50 to prep and respray them. Happy days

All signs of chrome are now gone!!

That's a saving and then some!

Nice car history. I first saw the san merino colour at a BMW dealership last year and I can't imagine it not looking good on any car. Thankfully it seems a rare colour still so you get a sense of presence and occasion when you a top end BMW with it. The old 640d looked really good with the dechromed touches too.

Thanks - I loved that 640d, it’s only down to boredom that Ai moved it on, cannot recommend them enough for a daily. Was happy with how mine ended up.

SAN Marino is a stunning colour, photos don’t seem to capture it.

My 4 exhaust tips have been bugging me since I got it.... one of the telltale signs of a Comp Pack car are gloss black tips and mine just looked knackered!

3 of them came off pretty easily, last one took ages - always bloody one!

Used CIF and a very light scrubber to get rid of the surface dirt. Then autoglym metal polish, super resin polish and finally a carnuba wax in an effort to seal them and allow for keeping clean via a weekly wash:

Here they are back on the car:

Much nicer to the eye!

While the tips were off I decided to do the exhaust valve mod to keep the flaps open 100% of the time. Relatively easy ten minute job and gives the car a bit more grunt in the lower Rev range without droning or being to anti social. The exhaust note is perfect for me now, certainly wouldn’t want it any louder, I’ll try and upload a video

Having washed it yesterday today was spent sorting out the fiddly bits such as the engine bay:

Wasn’t too bad to start with but cleaned it up regardless and used PoorBoys trim restorer on all the plastics.

Here it is out and about picking up food earlier:
