First readers car thread I think (I don't think I have done any on previous cars), but seeing as this is a bit of a weekend/Midlife crisis at 29 car (I'm 30 this year wobble ) I thought I would do a bit of a progress thread.

I had been thinking about a second car for some time, and we are in the early design stages of getting a house extension that will consist of a bigger garage, new bedroom/ensuite etc above it and convert this existing pokey garage into a utility + storage mini garage thing. So even though this isn't going to happen until next year at least I have bought a car to put in it hehe

I was looking at various cars from Honda S2000 to 125i coupes and SLK55 AMGs (until I realised how much a good one goes for! One day maybe...), then NC mx5s. However, rust issues on these put me off them. Then I noticed that E85 Z4s are pretty good value so decided this was the route to go down. I looked at one a few weeks ago at a dealer which mechanically seemed ok but had clearly been poorly resprayed down both sides at some point, and the wheels were badly corroded. I left it but someone bought it that day so that was off the list anyway. Then yesterday I went to see a 2.5 advertised privately in Northampton, which was described on the phone as having a folder of history, lots of options and good front tyres and ok rears.

Well I got there and yes it was well specced (xenons, 18 inch split rims, heated seats and memory seats), but the car had not been serviced between 2011 and 2020, the rear tyres were completely shot, the fronts were dated 2012 and cracking badly, it seemed to dart all over the place over bumps and the drivers heated seat didnt work. I offered him £3300 basing it needed 4 new tyres, a suspension refresh etc but said I wanted to look at another first.

Drove to the next one in Rotherham (which I found on Gumtree) to be greeted by a very honest clean and tidy car presented by a very honest and nice yorkshireman. It was a Sterling Grey 2.5 SE with Xenons, Elipsoid wheels and parking sensors, but little else (fine by me). The guy was reluctantly selling it as it wasn't getting the use (I think reading between the lines the mrs was behind the sale not him!). It had a full service history, roof motor relocation, had 4x new shocks in January, new brakes all round in the last year and the wheels had just been refurbed with new tyres. Only issue that lets the bodywork down is a small rust scab on the front arch which looks like a stone chip gone bad.

The interior was a little tired in places (the ash tray trim I think is from an LCI car as its the wrong silver, the drivers seat back has come off, the drivers door card is not attached properly at the bottom and it has a dated Parrot kit fitted). But it drove fine, the engine appears to have no leaks, the lights are not really cloudy and theres no knocking coming from the suspension. It was up at £4000 but we agreed £3850 and I'd collect the next day (today).

The guy picked me up from the station in it, we did the paperwork and monies and I was on my way. I got the impression that he was gutted to sell it to be honest which in my eyes means it must be a good car biggrin

The drive home wasn't completely uneventful - at motorway speeds the steering has a mind of its own randomly wanting to go left then right etc which took some getting used to, but otherwise it drove fine. I'm hoping the steering issue is just going to be some old bushes or track rod ends, but I will get that sorted ASAP.

These are the only 2 pictures I took as it was chucking it down when I got home.

So far this is my to-do list:

Urgently:
-Sort steering issue (will get it in the garage in the next week or so)
-Disable the awful reversing beep from the sensors to stop it sounding like a reversing lorry!

Medium term:
-Fix drivers seat back
-Give the interior a deep clean
-Get some proper mats for it
-Remove Parrot kit/possibly fit new headunit
-Sort doorcard out
-Get a 2nd key cut and coded for it (it only came with 1)
-Clean and seal the roof
-Possibly fix rust scab if it can be blended in easily enough

Long term/maybe do at some point:
-Replace tatty dash/console trim
-Replace auto-dimming mirror as it is permanently dark
-Get it detailed/protected/get headlights restored and sealed
-Replace naff exhaust trims
-Replace budge tyres with something decent
-Replace DIY cut-to-shape mirror glass with proper part
-Replace gearknob

I am sure there are other things I will find, but other than the steering issue I am very happy with it. It looks like there was alot wrong with it but it was only of the tidiest and most honest cars I saw (all the ones I looked at were 3700-4000 mark) and most of the above are nit-picking an 18 year old car with 108k on the clock.

Hopefully I will have some updates soon biggrin

Cheers

You're a bit young to have a mid-life crisis to be fair, but then I was 55 when I bought my 1st Z4 so maybe I had a late-life crisis?
But they do seem to get under your skin - I'm on my 3rd Coupe nearly 7 years later and just love it. smile

Finding a 2003 model is handy because they are pre-wired for any options you may want to add like cruise, heated seats, etc. and yours looks great on those Ellipsoid wheels, which are pretty sought after in Z4 circles.

Given that you mention a relocated roof motor I suspect you may have already found the z4forum website but from what I have read on there I'd fit decent quality non-runflat tyres before getting too involved in suspension refreshing.

I've read some positive reviews for headlamp polishing kits that you can do yourself with nothing more than an electric drill.

And if your exhaust trims are the originals they will be stainless, so a combination of someting like Solvol Autosol, elbow grease and some rags will make them look worlds better.

If you remove the door card while it's off it's worth clearing the drains, adding some sound-deadening and checking the plastic membrane before refitting it - probably just needs some new clips.

There are much better gear-knobs in the BMW range than what they fitted to Z4s like ZHP, or after-market like StormWorkz.

But that's enough sensible stuff - just get out and drive it. driving

Cheers both - I don’t think I’m really having a midlife crisis, but several people have mocked me as having one for buying a convertible hehe

Yeah I’ve not signed up to z4 forum but have lurked - need to sign up really. I’m 90% sure the issue is suspension/steering related as it feels like the steering wheel is pinballing when at motorway speeds - the tyres are non-runflats but budget so will get replaced eventually but they are new so are a low priority at the minute.

The headlights are pretty good but could do with a polish to make perfect but again are a low priority at the minute.

The exhaust trims are definitely not original and look rubbish so will replace them with either originals or ones that look pretty close biggrin

I do think these will be a future classic. Had two myself and loved them. A 3.0, and a 2.2 (got cheap due to some fault codes pertaining to engine too lean, consensus was lambda or cat but knowing these I took a risk)

Was a split intake boot in the end, think it was 20 odd pounds.

Enjoy!

That looks lovely OP, I’m a big fan of the Z4 it’s aged really well and it’s got my favourite wheels on it too.

Probably got in there just in time before people start trying to buy cabs for the meter weather (if it ever arrives).

Lovely car OP and in the best colour for a Z4.

A good friend of mine bought one of these for doing track days in and after a few upgrades (Bilstein suspension, polybushes, cup 2 tyres and fast road alignment) Ricky from LLF was pleasantly surprised at a track day. Both my 330ci E46 and the Z4 were all over, if not quicker than him on Thruxton circuit. I believe Ricky was in his Civic Type R EP3 and also a track spec'd Type R.

Not sure why I'm rambling, as I just came to say, lovely car laugh

Ah, I love an E85. Had a 3.0i for six years, probably the favourite of my back catalogue so far. Mine was Maldives Blue with a beige interior and... wood dash. How's that for mid-life crisis? And I was 24 when I bought it.

Re: the steering; on the OEM Bridgestone runflats mine tramlined all over on rutted motorways, product of primitive electric power steering and primitive run flats I guessed. Swapping the tyres for Michelin PS ZP's pretty much resolved it. The other thing to look out for is "sticky steering" which is a known issue. As suggested by earlier, Z4-Forum is a great source of info on these.

Cheers all, I wanted to get one soonish deliberately before summer tax starts to be added on ( there was already signs of that in the last few weeks).

This colour and wheel combo was my first choice so I am happy - I didn’t want a bright coloured one or one with the split rims really but this came up as I wanted so all good

I bought one of these towards the start of lockdown, they are great little cars if you take them for what they are - a modern day version of a 6 cylinder british roadster; great for blatting down country lanes. I have had some great WFH-frustration relieving drives, fantastic on a cold evening after a long day.

Mine is a leggy 157k mile cheapo one, but it's great for the money. I also need to sort wondering steering out.

I purchased the Carly OBD adapter, so I could set the car up more how I liked, get remote hood opening for the roof (a godsend in tight spaces!), one touch on both windows etc. Oh and read any faults! Well worth it in my opinion.

My passenger side seat back has fallen off; fixed by putting it in the boot.

Thread here, I will keep an eye on yours. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing//topic.asp?h=0...

Quick update (no pictures as I did it in a rush on my lunch break)

Door card is now attached. Ordered some BMW OE equivilent clips off ebay with the foam washer yesterday and they arrived this morning (not bad for £3.40 delivered). Managed to do it without removing the doorcard. I think the larger yellow clips on the sides of the panel are past their best but the reason the clips were loose is because someone has had the doorcard off in the past and re-fitted with the incorrect clips, which weren't big enough to clip in. With some brute force the new ones clipped in so hopefully thats the end of it. If I ever have need to remove the doorcard again I will order some new yellows and replace all with new.

I also found the speaker plug for the stupid reverse bonging. If anyone is interested there is a speaker under the steering column which provides the reverse bonging, the sensor proximity beeps and something else that isn't plugged/fitted to mine. There is a panel at the edge of the bottom of the dash directly above the pedals. You just need to undo the 3x Philips (or 2x on mine as someones been there before) and pull the panel down a bit, then pull out plugs until the bonging stops. On mine the big plug was the power feed for the speaker, so bonging and sensor beeps stopped. The smaller clear/white plug stopped the bong but the sensor beeps still work. I just taped this out the way with some tessa tape (and put some over the metal connector of the plug as a precaution) and all sorted.

Also had a bit of a poke round the car, and it looks like it has a bit of an oil leak. It looks like its leaked for some time, wasn't on the last MOT and doesn't leak enough to drip on the floor (though the undertray and the block is a bit wet). I assume it will be cam cover gasket or something so will ask that to get looked at when the suspension is looked at.

Not sure how I missed this when looking at the car, but there was no oil burning smell on the test drive, none on the way home but I got a whiff occasionally when nipping to the shop to get lunch today. Nevermind, I kind of expected a few surprises with such an old car!

Congrats, nice colour combo and I'm a fan of the wheels. cool

M54 engine is robust, but as you appear to be experiencing, cam cover gasket oil leak not uncommon.

Re the gear knob, consider the BMW ZHP knob. Shorter and heavier than the OEM item, a worthwhile upgrade that makes the shift a lot more positive.

(I checked my Z4's MOT expiry date today...turns out it expired in Jan! Car has been sitting in the garage since late last summer so something on the 'to do' list.

Cheers, yeah a ZHP is on the list as the existing gear knob is loose. Only thing I don’t like is that it has the M// logo on it which I’m not keen on.

Also, I had been intending to do the DISA valve repair kit at some point, but noticed this morning that it was running a little lumpy at idle from cold so have ordered the kit today. Looks fairly straightforward to do so it will keep me busy for an hour when that arrives.

I had a 2004 3.0i SE back in 2010 that replaced my Z3M (yes, yes, I know.....) and it was a really good car, especially on a long drive (well, once you ditch the runflats). Mine was Merlot Red with Beige leather and Ellipsoid alloys. Looked good.

Have a search on the BMW forums regarding the steering. If memory serves me correctly, it was one of BMW's first EPAS systems and there was a glitch with it on early cars that can be rectified. Mine had the odd tendency for the steering to weight up, then go light when stationary. It almost felt like the passenger was leaning across pulling gently on the wheel.

Other than that, I just had to replace the roof motor on mine, but it was a really good car.

Oh, and I rectified the daft decision to replace my Z3M with a Z4 by replacing that with a Porsche 968 Sport, so I sort of redeemed myself a bit.

Today went for an essential local journey to Matlock to go to a cake shop that my girlfriend had seen does amazing cakes/Brownies etc on facebook which turned out not to be open! rolleyes Anyway drove their top down and all was well. Had a wander round, bought some lunch in the park and headed back.

When I got home the DISA rebuild kit from X8R had arrived so decided to crack on and do that. Was a bit more faffy than I anticipated but otherwise went fairly smoothly. I won’t document it as there are loads of guides/videos etc out there, but here is a before+ after of the DISA valve.

Before (id already pulled the pin before taking the picture)

After

It has made more of a difference than I thought - car seems much punchier and smoother lower down the rev range and idle seems better so far. The old valve/pin were still appearing to be operating fine so god knows how they run when they are properly goosed!

Also won some vents off eBay with cup holders which hopefully will arrive in the next few days smile

I won a pair of vents with cupholders off ebay in at the weekend, and they arrived yesterday. Complete and working in the ad and pictures...

Open the packaging to be greeted with this:

Not a great use with half the holder broken off! The arm wasn't in the packaging so can't have been damaged by the courier. Requested a return stating that they were intact in the pictures, one is broken now and theres no piece in there so must have been broken prior to posting, and within minutes the seller gets upperty that they were perfectly fine but straight off offers a 30 quid refund (were 110 for the pair). I'm pretty sure he knew they were broken.

Since only one vent is of use to me I wanted 50% off not 25% so declined that and have sent them back. So on the lookout again.

Also, all of a sudden the drivers side speakers all sound terrible, so I think the amp might be playing up. Joys! Luckily I'm not driving round with tunes blaring out so its not the end of the world.

That's the problem with Ebay sadly.

If the mechanism is still there I'm pretty sure someone on z4forum was 3D printing the arms, but someone else found this source for replacement cup-holders:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08MTHSYGC/ref...

Ah cheers - I will get them on order - don’t mind non OE ones when BMWs own design is also crap!

I assume they just screw in the hole behind the blanking panel on non-cupholder cars?

Quick update:

Garage have looked at the leak and suspension - on the latter the only thing they found was one of the top mount rubber was split so they replaced this and the car seems a bit better - so might go back and get the other one done. The oil leak they think is the front crank seal - they have put some snake oil seal conditioner in (I’m not convinced but I know the guy and he is honest and wouldn’t recommend something unless it’s likely to work/help) and been told to monitor and see how it goes. Worst case the seal doesn’t sound that involved to replace so labour rates shouldn’t be too bad.

Ordered some of those cupholders above which should be here soon. Also won a genuine BMW stubby aerial for £20 delivered off eBay which also should be here soon.

Oh and I got a ZHP gearknob off Amazon which arrived today. You could feel the weight difference just from the box! Got home and fitted in 30 seconds.

It's good to see you are getting your car how you want it. thumbup

And not surprisingly that you prefer the ZHP! Getting the Clutch Delay Valve removed and fresh fluid in the gearbox helps too.

Not much to update really:

-Stubby aerial arrived but not fitted yet
-Got my money back on the broken cupholders
-New cupholders have not arrived yet
-Did some tests with the non working speakers, turns out it was just a blown tweeter in the drivers door (tested it was actually a speaker issue by unplugging both and swapping round). Ordered a replacement off eBay, that arrived but also does not work! So requested a return on that, and bought another one.
Buying an older car has reminded me why buying 2nd hand parts is rubbish!
