Hi,

Having had a capable but very dull Skoda octavia for the past two years I was getting a hankering for something more interesting. I couldn't give up the Skoda as with fuel it costs <£200/month inc private use which is very cheap. I did toy with getting a three year old S4 or VW golf R estate but costs were comparably high. So a 'third' car seemed to make more sense.

I spoke to my Dad and we agreed to go 50:50 on something with two seats and >4 cylinders. We looked at BMW Z4, SLKs, 350Zs but settled on a Boxster. Initially we were looking at 986 S's however the ones we saw were a bit rough. A bit of budget creep saw us into an early 987 (non-s).

One came up local to my dad so he was tasked to go and look at it. A deal was done without me seeing it but it turns out to have full Porsche specialist history, PASM, Litronic (xeons), PCM and the rare six speed 'box.

I picked it up from him this weekend and I am impressed. 240bhp from the 2.7 flat six with a decent amount of torque, it needs to be revved to get the most from it but it sounds great. Relatively heavy steering and low amount of servo from the brakes takes a little time to get used to but overall makes for a fun drive. Its quite practical with two 'boots'.

Plans for the immediate future:
Repair some road rash on the front wheel arches
Take it to Revolution Porsche in Leeds to have the exhaust modified to provide a bit of a more soulful exhaust sound

Congrats on the purchase, car looks brilliant!

I've a 987.1 in Guards Red, with a slightly more 'bare' spec. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out after a trip to Revolution. If I didn't live so far away from civilization it would be on my list to visit them.

Thanks mate, I have been reading your thread. Guards red is a top colour for a Porsche. Yes, I am too, fingers crossed for some decent sound!

How do you find the performance of yours? Sometimes I do think that an s may have been a little more exciting?

I agree, an S would have given a bit more performance, and sometimes I wish I went for one.

The predominate reasons went for a 2.7 included the fact that I could insure it for half the price I expected, an S would have proven to cost a substantial amount more. Further, the idea of bore scoring was a bit scary, and also the purchase price.

If I did it all again, I would probably go for an S for a few reasons; better acceleration, and a 6th gear. My car is a 5-speed, and although it is a more reliable 'box, sitting in 5th on the motorway gets tedious.

First job sorted this week. Managed to replace the elastic in the hood to help pull the soft top inwards when closing as it was getting stuck on the outside. (See pics)

Easy fix - new elastic, sew onto the soft top and screw in.

Also managed to fit a car seat to get the little one in. He loves it!

Cheers

Tom

That’s lovely OP.

Kids love roof down motoring; my little buy thinks it’s the best thing ever.

Time of an update:
The last 10months or so has been very fun. I managed a few trips out in it and some decent 250miles plus runs. So far so reliable… its due at revolution in Leeds for a service and MOT test in a couple of weeks. I’m a little apprehensive as we haven’t had the car looked over since buying it from an independent dealer so fingers crossed they find nothing disastrous.
The visit to revolution will also be addressing the incidence of the falling fishing box… it was parked in the garage and a fishing box that hadn’t been disturb for. 5years plus fell on it and dented the top of the wing and slid down scratching the bonnet. Given a new wing would look too nice against the stone chopped bonnet and number I have decided to have a front end respray at the same time. The estimate for the work was reasonable and will add some value to the car. I need to look into costs for a ppf really - has anyone a clue for prices for this?
Whilst there it’s having an exhaust bypass done too.
Here’s some pics for the last year:
