Hi - I am embarking on getting my Merc back on the road. Its been neglected for the last 5 years (its got rust) Stalls and a whole host of issues;

Be great to communicate with other owners of this model to learn from.. Sadly my own knowledge is rubbish, so may be a little one way..

I hope someone finds me!

Thanks

Do you have one? (as they are very rare only 8614 of this model ever made) .. Anyhow - any tips and advice would be very welcome!!!

In terms of bodywork there is one company I have used in Chippenham. They did great work on my daily driver and I will be entrusting them to work on my SL55 in the next year or so.

Prestige Bodyworks Chippenham Ltd

The car looks lovely.

Great looking car !

I have always liked the 70's Mercs.

Is this one a 'pillarless coupe' ie does the rear side window retract completely like the Jag XJ 6/12 C Coupes ?

Anyway, good luck with the journey, I am sure that there will be Merc folk on PH who can advise and suggest solutions, and there must be a decent Owners Club as well.

I had a 250CE a few years ago which was a total rust bucket. Not my best ever purchase! I’ve still got a few bits and bobs lying round if you need anything.

Looking forward to this. Been on the hunt for a c114 for a few years now. Happened to see one whilst driving my partner to the hospital to give birth to my son, which is a sign if ever I needed one.

OP - any more pics of the car/history?

Hey, You should find one - they are becoming rare. Mine is from the USA. I believe only 8614 were ever made.. I love the top of the radiator that says "Made in Western Germany" Just so much history..
I'll be taking some more this week when i start to flush, clean, repair all the little things I can do.. changing the Rod Ends..The rumble of the engine is so 1970's.
I had a 540SL which sounded great, but this I think sounds better (& less flashy but very attractive)..
i'll take pics for sure.

I had a 1970 250CE XAP202J, ivory body, chocolate roof and hubcaps, dark green leather and an ivory steering wheel. First service carried out on the Côte d'Azur, oh the glamour...

Adored it, last seen on eBay 20 years ago advertised by the next owner for restoration after he’d been in hospital for a month and left the sunroof open during a particularly wet spell.

I always have a flutter of excitement whenever an ivory one comes up for sale, but thus far disappointment...

if I had the money, I would be tempted to do a "restomod ' with this.....
If you have a look at Retropower on YouTube, they have done ( or are doing ) a couple of big 60s/70s Mercs: but they are way and above what many would consider...!!! As they have massive engines and all sorts of modifications to suit the customer.
And judging by the time and level of their work, the finished cars will be mega pricey...!!

So perhaps a mild engine boost, and some suspension mods to make it handle better, all subtle so as to maintain the original look of the car....
maybe a modern Merc engine which would make it easier to use everyday, things like that.

Or, you could just 'restore' it to OEM which I guess is what you are going to do !!

I am - the engine is sound. No leaks, no rattles - when running she sounds great - I Had new carb's put in.. Brakes need sorting and a decent tune up. All the paperwork suggests 31500 miles on the clock - looking at it one could believe it.. Its very clean..I'll def look that up..
Im def' not going to pimp it.. Shocks, cosmetics and deal with the rust.. Changing the rod ends this sunday!
Thanks for the tip!!
