Our primary car is a diesel X3, perfectly capable for nursery and school runs. Our previous second car was a Toyota Yaris which had to change. I started looking at M2's, but was told (and rightly so) that we really need a car with 4 doors as nursery and school runs are often split.

I restricted my search to the approved used BMW network and was originally looking at M3's, but then noticed that the f10 M5 was a really reasonable price, especially when you consider they have 560hp as standard.

I've settled on this 2014 LCI model in black with Silverstone leather. Not too many options, with 20's, reverse camera, split rear seats and adaptive LED headlights, however the cars are so well specced as standard that this isn't an issue.

The car isn't a garage queen and as such a didn't restrict myself to low mile examples. Mine had 60k when I collected which is average for the age of the car. BMW wouldn't budge on the (reasonable) price, but they did throw in an extra year warranty to take it to 2 years comprehensive.

Use of the car...usual family duties as well as the occasional car show and trip up to Northumberland to visit my parents. I've covered c.1,000 miles since buying the car and it averages an impressive 18-20mpg combined and averaged 30mpg on a long motorway run. Not bad for a 560hp 4.4l v8 twin turbo.

Some pics.

I don't intend to do any mods on the car, certainly nothing that isn't OEM. I got the opportunity to buy OEM carbon interior trim at a very good price and had to fit it.

The fitting itself was very straightforward. All the doors combined took 10 minutes, dash trim 15 minutes and the centre console 45 minutes and that's taking time over it.

Thanks. I love it. I was tempted to dechrome the front, but think I’ll keep it as is. Breaks up the black and keeps it looking like a regular 5 series…

Bit of engine porn:

Deffo keep the OEM chrome grilles

I'm not a fan of chrome; but on BMWs; the kidney grilles are the finishing touch in chrome IMO

Lovely car! Echo the above, chrome far more classy on a BMW than black black bling bling. Carbon interior trim looks great too!

I wasn’t going to. Grills only, I’d keep the door handles and side intakes. Keep flip-flopping but am keeping it standard for now. Also think about carbon wing caps (going cold on that idea) but do want the carbon M performance exhaust tips.

I had the same a new M5 back in 2015, individual platinum leather and then added the carbon trim the cost was eye watering new though back then £2500....

I did de-chrome it though and added a ACS spring kit and exhaust

That looks lovely OP; the carbon interior trim is really nice.

I’m not usually a fan of chrome but it looks ok on a black car, although in true on the fence style I like the dechromed car posted above. It’s your car, do what you want. Try them black and if you’re not sure swap them back.

Nice car, but definitely keep the chrome. I see so many M cars with black grilles and they just look 'aftermarket', the chrome is how it's meant to look and all the better for it.

Think the engines in these, as always with BMW S engines, have some weaknesses that are shown up when abused, so avoid remapping them and make sure you always warm up before nailing it. Not sure if the rod bearings are routinely changed preventatively like almost every other S engine, but when the warranty runs out it will be worth considering. I'd also change the oil at most in 10k intervals if not sooner, especially as the car gets older.

Enjoy it, I bet its a great thing to go for a blast in

Really nice. As mentioned below, jealous of the comfort seats. The only two additional options I’d love to have are comfort seats and 360 parking camera.

I believe the seats are swappable (need to swap the module too) and I may do that at some point in the future if a good condition set comes up for sale.

I knew the list price for carbon interior. Crazy isn’t it!

I swapped to black on the M4 but it still looked fine with the chrome I thought.

I don’t think rod bearings are changed as part of routine maintenance, but something I’ll keep an eye on. From what I’ve heard, provided you keep the torque at stock levels, the engine is very robust. Let the oil temp reach the first mark and then you’re good to go (approx 90c).

I’ll likely do annual oil changes (c.8k miles) so more frequent than told.

Seems our American cousins have had a few failures, but they do like to tinker..

Car is a blast. Refined, but very quick when you want it to be.

I think that looks better with the black.

It’s an easy 2 minute swap though, so something I might do in the future if I want a change. I like it on the M5 example posted above too.

I’m 50/50 as I also like the stock styling. Think it’s very colour dependant. Chrome looks better on a black car…or maybe I’m chatting bks.
