206 GTI's when one French car isnt enough
Discussion
Hi All,
I thought id introduce my two latest projects.
Although i love my MK4 Golf platform cars of which i still own 4 i fancied something a little more fun and light.
I was browsing marketplace one day when i spotted a 206 GTI 180 for sale locally. It had just had a brand new MOT with new callipers and suspension work new tyres the lot. However the person who owned the car was unable to insure the car and needed a quick sale. I was there to save the day and did a buy.
Bodywork wise she's a little rough but the plans were to turn her into a track car so wasn't bothered anyways.
As im typing this im realising i haven't taken many photo's of this fine steed, ill aim to sort this later if the weather holds out.
The old girl has a mere 130k on the clock, and came with no history. Clutch is a little high so thats just been ordered (£36 brand new). I will also order a timing belt and fit that soon.
As soon as i got it home i dropped the oil and gave it a service.
Picture of said steed that i have

That leads me onto steed 2.

Myself and fellow forum member Mikeyplumb booked a track day for less than a months time to take the cars on.
My shopping list was big but time was short, when again on marketplace another 206 GTI popped up. This one was a 135 bhp standard GTI but had already been semi track prepped and used on 2 track days. Best of all it was cheap and just an hour away.
The deal was done, i introduce steed number 2, again i dont have many pictures of this at the moment so i will get some sorted this weekend.
Its already been stripped out and bucket seats mounted (no harnesses though, thankfully i have some spare), its got coilovers on the front and has had a new timing belt and clutch less than a year ago. Its had EBC yellows put on it with an aftermarket back box. Its also got some track tyres on it with some hand painted yellow wheels.. PERFECT.
The drive home was great, the car pulled strong and didnt skip a beat.
Plans are now to just to change the oil on the green 206 and take it to Llandow in a few weeks time.
The silver 180 has now been put into daily use back and forth to work. Shes done almost 1000 miles in the last 2 weeks.
Hopefully some more updates later this week

Looks good. I had a standard 206 GTI when I was younger but had lots of niggling issues with electrics which I could never solve.
My friend bought a brand new 206 180 which was lovely, but hadnt done his man maths properly and soon realised he couldn't afford to run it.
Great cars though and look pretty nice.

The GTI 180 is 'the one that got away' for me and I keep telling myself to buy one while there are still nice ones kicking about! I had a 206 1.4 Hdi for years and years, from college through uni and into my first job - loved it. Looks great OP, does it feel much more lively than the lower powered gti?
I always wanted one in Aegian (spelling?) blue!

Yes it does, i had them side by side and the 180 just revs that much more and pulls alot harder, and thats with the regular GTI being fully stripped and the 180 being a full weight car. I always wanted one in Aegian (spelling?) blue!
As i mentioned above mind i dont like the ride as much on the 205/40/17's there just not enough tire there.
I really like these. I remember reading the articles when they were first launched describing the differences with the base GTi. Longer first gear, additional links in the trailing arm rear suspension to increase lateral stiffness (shared with the 206 sw), those special seats and the leather-covered binnacle part, and of course the reworked cylinder head.
Shame they couldn't fit a 6speed!

They always seemed to be a bit "under the radar" but that probably helps keeps prices sensible!
I was reading an older Clarkson book the other day and his review started off saying why not just save a few quid and buy a Mini Cooper S. But then he drove the 206 and reckoned it took him back to how 80s hot-hatches used to feel - he loved it (except it was hot at the time and his didn't have A/C).

Nice little hatches.
I like the 206's, I had a 1.1 litre sport version as my first car, looked like a GTi has had all same bodywork and 16" wheels however it was so slow I reckon I could've run faster.
Anyway I have fond memories of taking it round my local B roads, was really good handling and being lightweight made it very good value on consumables.
Would've loved a GTi 180 version and they are great value for money now. Congrats

I had a 180 that I used as a track car. Was plenty quick, handled well, and was above all, fun.
I doubt I'll own any other older Pug hatches though. After many 306, 106 and the mentioned 206, I just can't be bothered to work on their rear torsion beam set up, it's a pain!
The 180 is a fair bit quicker than the 135 gti, but not so much that it's in another league. Still, it was able to keep up with Clio 1*2 and 306 Gti6 etc. I had my 180 on a dyno of dubious quality, and it made around 150bhp, some have claimed theirs made 180 proper and the reason being is because they needed some update from Peugeot at the first service. Sounds like rubbish, and no definite answers on the owners clubs.
The 180 uses a different gear linkage to the 135, cable and mechanical respectively. It sometimes falls apart inside and needs reassembly. It's simple enough, but you'll need to remove the exhaust under the gearstick area and access the little box where linking is held.
Also, the brakes can be an utter nightmare to bleed, so beware. The abs valves in system supposedly needs to be opened with some Peugeot software to get the job done properly, and even after failing myself several times and taking it to Peugeot, they still felt utter crap.
The 17's are rubbish on track, and over poor road surfaces. For road I used 16's and got some 15's for track and dropped the suspension to suit. Arch gap is horrendous on these standard.
Exhausts are hard to find, and expensive when you do. The back box is mounted at 90 degrees to the rest of the pipe and so just bolting on a generic item can be tricky also.
Anti pollution fault was often flashing up, never seemed to do anything to performance but multiple OBD plug ins and replacements parts never seemed to get rid of it entirely.
Hope you enjoy it!

That's where they seem to come alive.. the green one on coilovers is set up great.. it handles so well I like the 206's, I had a 1.1 litre sport version as my first car, looked like a GTi has had all same bodywork and 16" wheels however it was so slow I reckon I could've run faster.

Done an oil change on the 135 gti this morning so she has some fresh blood.. also run some better brake ducting for cooling.
Took the dog and my little girl out for a drive and walk.. manages to swallow a full Doberman no problem too

Ive just realised that i havent updated this thread in a while,
The 206 180 has been putting in good work all year, however i did replace the lower arms as the ball joints were making a fair bit of noise. £40 all in for 2 brand new lower arms.
It was also..... well a bit quiet, so i managed to find a full stainless exhaust for it. So it now makes a nice bit of noise when its going
Shes due an MOT in about 6 days time so i need to pull my finger out and book her in.

The green 206,
She smashed her track day back in September, with only one issue towards the end of the day. The front passenger brake line gave out, this resulted me having a bit of a spin over some grass but other than that she was perfect. As soon as i got her home i replaced the brake line for a mere £15 for 2 new front brake lines delivered.
The 206 has since been in hibernation over winter and the plan is to get her on some track days soon.

When 2 become 3? well sometimes an evening browse on gumtree ends up in another car. One evening whilst watching TV with the wife i spotted another 206 GTI near by for sale fairly cheap. It was the SP model which has some arch extensions on it and a few other bits of trim. Anyways it was £500 as the guy was leaving the country. I dropped him a message as the MOT was about up and offered a cheeky £350 if he isnt able to sell it.
Well 2 weeks later he responded so i now have a 3rd.
Initial plans - i have no idea - however i plan in the next week or two to have a good look around it and see if its worth saving... its very rough.. but could make a good targa car
