I’ve previously had an L322 and have always hankered after an L405 but until now they have always been out of my budget.

I’ve recently been running two cars. A 2006 Mondeo as a daily and a C7 Audi S6 for weekends and days off. Towards the end of May, I was involved in a non fault accident which resulted in the Mondeo getting written off. I took that opportunity to decide that I wanted one nice daily driver rather than two cars. This led me to the decision of looking for an L405 as I quite liked the L322 I had a few years ago.

I’m not sure what it is with Land Rovers, I suppose it’s character. With the previous Audi’s I had, they were so reliable, proficient at what they did but a bit boring. Perhaps it was just their Teutonic coldness coming through. I’m quite handy with the spanners and like tinkering with my cars. So this would put me in good stead for another Range Rover!

I found this one at an independent dealer close to me. I bought an early Audi TT from them around ten years ago and the guys still remembered me! They offered a decent trade in price on the S6 so a deal was done.

It’s a 2014 3.0 TDV6 Vogue SE in Mariana black. It’s a black with flecks of blue in. It kind of changes in the light. I can only compare it to BMW’s Carbon black. Cirrus grey interior. 22” turbine alloys.

The dealer has access to the Land Rover servicing database so completed an oil and filter change which was recorded on the system. They also arranged for the vehicle to have both cam belts changed. Apparently the rear one is a bit difficult to do but I insisted on it to be done nonetheless.

Since having it I’ve replaced the air filters, pollen filter and it’s had new pads and discs all round. I also fitted a new Bosch S5 battery.

Cosmetically, it’s had a later style front grille, SVA style side vents in body colour, body coloured front side grilles, later style rear light units (genuine) and a full diamond cut refurb of the wheels to take them back to standard as the dealer had them powder coated in standard silver. I’ve also had a Ghost immobiliser fitted.

In the next week or so I’m going to be fitting a facelift rear bumper and also later style steering wheel button packs. Pictures will of course follow of these mods.

I know these engines seem to be prone to crank case failure however it seems to hit at random. All I can do is keep on top of maintenance and stick to a regime of six monthly oil changes.

I love being back in a Range Rover. It’s a hefty lump and drives like a barge but it’s so comfortable and relaxing. Anyway, onto some pictures which document the changes I’ve made to it as well…

I love that, I have a L322 and would have mine pretty much exactly the same!

one of our members contacted LR no-help line. Here is his experience.

I contacted LR help line for advice on upgrading the radio toDAB+.

I received this reply ‘’As a manufacturer we do not recommend any changes to be actioned alongside a vehicle that will alter it from the original specification i.e how it came out of the factory’’.

What’s with the Vogue SE badge changing to an autobiography one for the later prictures?

OP wants to make out his RR is better than it actually is, same with Overfinch carpets. Passenger opens door to see Overfinch badge on carpet and says "Rupert I didn't realise your RR was an Overfinch"

answer that one Rupert !

Let me start by saying that I know nothing about these cars, and that goes as far as not knowing that an Autobiography is better than an SE.

Assuming that it isn’t rectification of a mistake, or even pictures in the wrong order (possible but I guess unlikely) I am thinking that there are three types of people that will look at those badges:
1. People like me who don’t know the difference, these people will not be impressed
2. People who broadly know the difference but not that much more, who will be impressed
3. People who really know the difference and can tell that the car has been misbadged, these people would be unimpressed.

Does the risk of 3 not outweigh the ‘benefit’ of 2?

I stopped paying attention to badges when ‘Ghia’ died, so appreciate I may not be the target market…
