Realistic Dream Car - F-Type Coupe
Discussion
As I'm sure we all do in our little corner of the internet.. we aspire to own some good-looking, high-performing metal and are always looking for the next step on the ladder.
Following a move to the USA a few years ago, I've been able to climb the ladder finally to somewhere that I feel I can be super proud of my car and fit into the many local car shows here in Southern California.
Previous cars include a V8 Challenger (Cool, but one trick pony), Alfa Giulia Veloce (great to drive, but a bit flakey) and then a 428i Convertible (Great PCH cruiser, boring as hell to drive anywhere else).
Within about 4 weeks of owning the BMW I knew I was going to move it on fairly quickly and was already looking for the next one (Please tell me we all do this, right?).
I knew I had to make the next step one that I could stick with rather than waste money again on something that I wasn't passionate about.
For my budget I considered:
Cayman, 997, Aston V8V and a couple of M cars.
The Porshe and Astons I would be buying significantly older models and I simply wasn't brave enough.. the M cars I felt were too similar to what I had now. I also toyed with new nearly new MX5s or Abarth Spiders, but I wanted something a little more 'premium'.
So enter.... the 2017 V6 Supercharged F-Type!
17k miles and a cracking deal on my BMW I couldn't say no. It is like new inside and out and I couldn't be happier!
The noise... oh the noise! Not as fast as the Challenger in a straight line and not quite as sharp as a Cayman... but I love it and I will be keeping this for a while (So I tell myself). It is a car that drives real passion and looks incredibly special in coupe form.
Some cosmetic mods to come like a dechrome.. and I was going to get bigger wheels, but I must admit the smaller ones are growing on me, especially with some bulbous tyres giving it more of a classic racer look than rubber bands around 21s.
1 year remaining on the warranty gives me peace of mind. Maybe after that, we'll think about a remap.
Some pics..

Looking forward to getting up the Angeles Crest Highway (I take all my new cars up there!).. I'll update with pics!

Congratulations on getting your realistic dream car.
It's a great feeling that I can relate to as I made my realistic dream come true in December 2019.
I've always liked the looks of the F-Type Coupe, and a V6S with a manual gearbox would be my pick - I don't want Auto all the time I can drive a manual! The only disappointing thing about them is I believe they are a bit on the heavy side for a 2 seater.

Thanks both.
Manual is interesting, they are very very very rare over here so never really on the table.
Interestingly I was set on a manual for either Porsche option I was considering though. Just felt like I needed to do it properly.
Alas, the same spec / age of Cayman was $25k more... or for the same money, was 6 years older.
I figured waiting until I could afford the one I wanted was the way to go with the P cars.
My next step up in a few years lets hope!

I maintain that these were an excellent overall package from Jaguar, especially the V6’s. With every category you’d care to measure giving you just enough excitement to be fun, at a price that is attainable to lots of people, in a package that looks and feels special. Still miss mine. Kind of don’t want to revisit them just in case they don’t match up to my romantic memories!
Lovely car OP, you cannot argue at the looks or the sound of these.
I had a short love affair with a F Type R Coupe in Status Grey.
Sadly for me, it didn't hit the spot and after 3 months I've sold it. It was a fantastic car in many ways but unfortunately just was missing when it came to being a really quality product.
Lots of little niggles (not driving reliability) added up to simply annoy me on a daily basis. .
Rock hard leather seats
Cheap switch gear
Possibly the worst sounding stereo I've ever heard
This was a low miles, FSH, under warranty example. It was never a patch on my previous car, a C63 507 Edition.
All this said, I completely get it as a car. It's utterly beautiful, goes like hell and sounds like it too.
Next up......some wheels from Stuttgart
Some snaps

Interesting discussion about the wheels.
When I was looking for one, I really didn’t like these. They scream ‘base model’ and I also though we’re under wheeled, especially in pictures. It was going to be my first mod.
Since getting the car and being with it in person. They are really growing on me, especially with the chunky tyres. Almost an outlaw/ street racer / Hoosier style (see Magnus Walkers 930s to see what I mean.)
They are fairly deep dished on the rears and follow the lines really well.
I’m very mixed on what to do.

I really like that especially with the wheels. Not too large, not too small. Just right.
We are used to seeing so many cars with comedy over sized wheels that arrest your eyes, that when you see this with 'right-sized' wheels you actually look at the shape of the car - its curves, the details, the way light hits the surfaces and appreciate it differently.
I suspect it also rides a lot better as well!

Beautiful car. I have 2 XKRs and my 2010 coupe is the best car I have or will ever own! Since you're in Socal, you ought to join us at car events every weekend. Sometimes we go to car meets, sometimes Canyon runs. P.m. me and let's get together. Typically, I'll be driving my Pantera but truth be told I like my Jaaag better.

Quite refreshing seeing one without horrible big black wheels and low profile tyres - looks a classy machine and almost timeless, nice motor!
Oh bugger..... Pic is from original advert, it came with the these from the factory. I would have preferred silver, and may change if they need a refurb at some time in the future. On a positive note, they do hide the brake dust quite well.
