I can be a sucker for non running heaps of junk and this week saw me have the terrible thought thay buying this s class for just £2000 was a good plan.
It's a 2009 S320 cdi L, just run in on 316,000 miles. Not been used in 2 years and was advertised as needing a full recomissioning, very little paperwork and the all elusive 'no V5c'.

I went to collect it taking my diagnostics scanner with me and drove it home after clearing a load of fault codes.

I've been tinkering this week and got a fair few jobs done and put it in for an mot today, it failed as expected, but remarkably only on emissions (he said he couldn't test it due to a boost pipe leaking) and a wheel nut missing from each wheel. 1 advisory for a tyre.
I've already fixed the boost pipe, a simple clip had come undone and I'll get the missing wheel bolts tomorrow then sling it in for a retest.

Most of the electrics seem to work after I replaced the dead auxiliary battery, bar the heater blower and the menu for seat lumbar massage/adjustment isn't working properly.

I plan to keep this for a while as a daily wafter to replace my current 320d.

I'll keep you updated on how it gets on and what hideously expensive part breaks first!

One word - congratulations.

I've the E estate equivalent with same 3.0 V6. Just check for oil leakage around lower engine as that's oil cooler seals and it's tuppence in parts but the price you paid in labour unless you DIY.

How's the airmatic working? I recommend you get the fluids and filters changed sooner than later Inc gearbox to save borkage on down the line.

Looks good in pics especially considering the mileage, very little bolster wear etc. You might have got lucky there.

Thanks. The airmatic appears to work fine, it raises and lowers on the button and stays raised when parked overnight.

I will indeed give it a comprehensive service and replace everything I can, including the gearbox oil/filter.
The interior feels very good for the mileage, the drivers seat is still very comfy and bolsters intact.

I will check for leaks under the engine, any more info on what seals you are referring to so I can get some replacements ordered?

Thanks

That's a lot of car (and bork potential!) for a couple of grand!

Airmatic would have been my main worry. Brave man!

Well it passed the MOT today! After removing a wheel bolt (to see if I had anything similar lying around) and seeing that they are an odd shape/size I just ordered a few straight from Merc, it was £30 ish for 5 so not too bad. It passed the emission absolutely fine!

It drives really nicely and has plenty of poke now the boost hose is connected up properly.

I don't know a whole lot about the airmatic system but am always a keen learner when the time comes. I have previously has a flood damaged SL55, with the ABC suspension and managed to work my way through the unending list of faults on that car so fingers crossed I can make it through any issues on this one.

I need to read up about the swirl flaps in the inlet and see if it's worth removing them or renewing them.

I'm keen to blank the EGR and get a mild remap so it breathes a bit easier and has a bit more pick up from low down, but I'm not going to mess with the dpf as don't want any trouble with MOT's nor do I want black smoke bellowing out the back!

I'm sure you're happy to get the MOT. I don't know lots about the issue as my car only on 170k haha, just run in hasn't had much trouble in the engine department.
Here's a video but there's lots of other tear down videos mainly Russian ones if you need to get in there.

I don't know much about airmatic either but I think both issues are less common than imagined anyway. I know more about ABC as I have an SL55 as well although thankfully ABC has never been an issue on it. Previous sl500 the pump went but traded it in got way over book for it thankfully.

Only issue I've had with my om642 is that orange turbo seal needed replacing, twice maybe. An injector was leaking slightly, you can hear a put put kinda sound. Indy fixed that for about£100 but the fuel line to it wasn't reseated properly and leaked diesel but fixed on second attempt no charge.

A glow plug is giving bother periodically but isn't causing any issues if I turn the key to position 2 a couple times before cold starting. I'm quite impressed by the grunt especially with overtaking which I like to do.

However booting it from lower speeds say passing a tractor it can kind of kangaroo. I know other people have had this but I don't know exactly why but I suspect it's more the gearbox than engine/boost. Reason being it doesn't happen if I overtake and change gears manually.

My estate has non adjustable self leveling air springs in the rear and conventional suspension up front which has been the main expense items on the car.

I mean at the price you've paid for it if you get a trouble free year before it blows up you'll not be that annoyed I'm sure but you could get much longer.

May the odds be ever in your favour.
I've got a 2009 E350 cdi, so same engine - on a tiny 128k in comparison! Very smooth engines, mines had some of the same niggles mentioned above. The only hideous bill was a MAF sensor which costed around £900 because the MAF(s) are part of one giant intake manifold with other sensors attached.
The gearbox actually has a service schedule unlike a lot of other brands, which means sometimes they do get serviced (hopefully).

Hi Hi, any updates on the limo since you got it MOT'd? It's got me looking again at S classes.
