as I remember my dad's first car was a Renault, but that was back in the early seventies. what i want to talk about here is the Renault 18 my brother drove back in the late eighties.
I used it a bit and despite being only a 1400 it went like the clappers. this due, I'm sure, to the whole car weighing as much as a sheet of paper. with attendant build quality.
At the time my dad had a small Volvo which upon inspection appeared to have the same engine. I can't remember what happened to the car, I know it wouldn't die! my brother became ill and it stood for years but always started and drove when asked. anyone else have any fond, or not, memories of this Gallic marvel?

At the time for an impressionable lad in late teens felt really fast. We went all over the country in that thing. Great memories. i can't remember what happened to it in the end but suspect it didn't see another owner.
We had a metallic green 18 saloon as a family car back in the early 80‘s. I was only a little kid, but I could already see that it was…
A) ugly
And
B) comfy
That a car felt comfortable on Irish roads in the early 80‘s is a serious achievement. It was also a pretty tough car.
My friends dad had one with a bigger engine. He would fairly fly along in it with us sat there, grinning.
