2013 MK6 Golf R
Discussion
I may be starting this thread a little prematurely as the car is being collected next week but the due diligence thus far hasn't revealed anything to put us off so it looks to be a done deal. We've been looking for something to replace the wife's '17 Octavia Scout for some time as the PCP is up in February and with the current used car prices we've agreed a sale just a grand less than we paid 4 years and 30k miles ago. This has also resulted in a lot more equity to play with. As an aside, Carwow came through top this time, much more than wbac and slightly better than cazoo.
Au-revoir Scout - it's been faultless while we've had it. 180hp TDI DSG 4WD.

Contenders have been wide and varied from Mk7.5 R's, Tiguan R Lines, Mini's, M140i's, S3's - you get the idea. Even flirted with an older F80 M3 but it was just out of budget. Then, a couple of days ago, my saved search pinged up an advert for a Mk6 R. It was in red - one of our preferred colours, had a sunroof, 5 door, Leather, DSG and relatively low miles at 35k. I was at work so put a call in to be told I may be too late as someone was on the way to view and it wouldn't be right for me to go before them with that in mind. Top marks to the dealer for that. The dealer then called me back to say they had called to ask for an eta from the other customer and he was quite rude so he called me back - if the customer was like that at that point - how would they be during a purchase? He was tod he wouldn't be buying the car. Anyway, I excused myself from work and went to view asap.
Having a look round it looked in god condition for the most part but with a couple of car park dents (which the dealer is sorting) some faded door handles and a quite poor (to my eyes) front bumper. I was let out on my own for the test drive and it drove well with a slightly firmer ride that our previous two MK7 R's but wasn't uncomfortable. I steering was a little light and with not a great deal of feel but it wasn't terrible. All cogs were changed nicely and it went reasonably - the bum dyno suggested it was a std car and not mapped such was the difference to the MK7's.
There's receipts for specialists in the last year, including:
Haldex Service
DSG Service
Cambelt
Oil service
4 x Matching Michelins
Alignment
Superpro anti lift kit
Dipstick (a common issue)
Milltek back box (thankfully not loud at all)
It sounded like the last owner was an enthusiast so I tracked him down through a Facebook owner forum and he was kind enough to reply. He sold recently to wbac for a good deal more than it was up for. The dealer bought at auction so wbac must have lost that one! He mentioned not really gelling with it after several Mk5's so moved it on. The only thing he did mention was that it's an import - something the dealer didn't mention. It looks like it was made in 2014 and imported in 2015. Carvertical checks and a call to VW confirm that it was a South African model wiht the CDCL engine and detuned slightly due to the hotter climate. This means 252hp/243lb-ft rather than 266hp/258lb-ft in a UK model. A remap sees both go to the same 300+ figure.
With everything looking ok - the price made up for the few blemishes - i put a deposit down. The leather and in particular the bolsters are unmarked and everything appears to work fine.

First things to research are appropriate places to get a remap and source some decent mats.

Very nice indeed. Red on black looks great. I had the mk6 gti and that went well enough, imagine this with a remap will do nicely!
I agree, while I'm not a fan of black wheels in general - at least red seems to work with them. Original spec had them as silver so they may change eventually. I've also got a set of 18" BBS CH in matte grey with winter tyres on - It won't be long til we get to see them on! okenemem said:
u dont see alot of these
True, there are only a handful for sale at the moment and very few with low miles.Court_S said:
Looks good in red and much rarer then the Mk7 R. I wonder if WBAC lost out because it’s an import?
Enjoy.
A friend has a Mk6 GTI in red which always looks well.
That was one of the reasons for trying - the rarity. With regard to the import status, I think it may have suffered at auction because of it but they also gave less to the previous owner than everything else - although it was comfortably more than we're paying. A cheeky trick as it's been in the UK from 2 years old and approx 4k miles. The only real difference is the slight detune.Enjoy.

Thanks for the positive comments folks.
So, got the car home today and the wife drove it back. Sounds like she likes it - there was the odd gripe comparing it to her 'brand new' at the time Mk7's, the seating position that needs some adjustment for her and the cost of vpower but otherwise all good. The two dents had been successfully removed by the dent man and promise of an oil service carried out. I don't know what they used for the oil service if honest so I expect I'll simply do it myself very soon to make sure.
I drove it home after we dropped the M3 in for some work due tomorrow and it felt better over bumps than I remember on the test drive but the steering to me feels quite light and a little disconnected. The M3 is quite heavy steering in comparison so maybe it was jumping out of that that did it? A few more miles for both of us are needed to get used to it. It's got a decent turn of speed but as per my first impressions, it's smoothly quick rather than feeling fast - here's hoping a remap will sort it out. It certainly looked well in the winter sun in the Tornado Red paint.
I've sat down this evening and re-checked the service history and recent receipts - I really like it when these come with the car instead of being binned, particularly when there are things included which I would have wanted to do anyway. Service history is as follows:
Date What Done Who By Mileage
29/10/2015 Minor Oil Service (longlife) Huddersfield VW 2714
03/07/2017 Major Oil Service and inspection (longlife) Huddersfield VW 7241
16/04/2019 Minor Oil Service Generic 19165
30/11/2020 Major Oil Service AKS Tuning 28655
11/01/2021 Minor Brake Fluid + DSG AKS Tuning 26534??
30/11/2021 Minor Oil Service Titty Ho Motors 35848
The only question is the drop in mileage on 11/01/21 - I'm going to assume it should have been 29534 miles as there is no other indication of a discrepancy and this was while with the previous owner who was clearly keen on the upkeep given the work he'd done. I'm 99% sure this is simply a typo.
Highlights of the recent work done are:
16/01/19 - Timing belt + Water Pump
30/11/20 - Camshaft Follower
30/11/20 - Haldex Service
22/12/20 - Diverter Valve
11/01/21 - Brembo discs and pads all round
11/01/21 - DSG Service
11/01/21 - AC Regas
11/01/21 - Miltek resonated centre section (and presumably rear box as that's on it now)
28/05/21 - Replacement Windscreen
12/08/21 - NGK BKR7EIX plugs
12/08/21 - Superpro Anti Lift Kit Bushes
Another little bonus is the car having 4 x matching Michelin PS4S' with plenty of life left in them. The cam follower, diverter valve and plugs were on my list to change so that's saved me some £ already.
From research done so far, on the want to do list is:
-Fuel Filter - 6.6 version
-PCV + Gasket
-VWR / itg panel air filter
-R8 Coils
The above is approx. £300 in parts, most of which I can likely do myself.
The car would benefit from a bit of paint at the front on the bumper and while there, it may pay to get the bonnet and wings done too - I'll get a quote and go from there. Even with these minor issues, the car was a decent price so it leaves some in the kitty to make it perfect(ish). A decent detail and polish will really let it stand out - the wheels are pretty much blemish free which is another bonus.

The first gripe - Vpower at £1.60/l!

I'm going to be watching this one closely; really interested to hear how a remap brings this in line with a mk7. Looks great, please keep us up to date!
Cheers pal, will do my best. I'm also interested in the comparison. If we can dial in some steering feel, that would also be a winner....Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
