Hello

This is my thread for my Edition 30 GTi.
I've had a few fast (ish) cars and after a change of circumstances (wife starting to work again and silly 2nd hand prices) I decided to sell my mk3 Leon Cupra 290 and "downgrade" to a cheaper car.

A lot of open searches online with a few key features brought one car to the top every time....a Golf GTi.
So the actual search began.

A knew a friend of mine was into his GTi's so I asked his opinion and he let me know that he was selling his Edition 30 as he'd replaced it with a mk7.5.
So after a quick viewing we struck a deal and the Edition 30 is nearly mine (pending an MOT)

So this was my Cupra. A lovely spec "black edition" in Dynamic Grey.
[/url]

And now the Golf.
It's a Black Magic 2008 car with 104k miles on, in 5dr and manual.

Overall it's quite messy on the outside and needs a fair bit of work cosmetically but mechanically it is sound. The stack of receipts and invoices I got is quite impressive.

It's come on eibach lowering springs and has had the pre-cat already removed.

So far I've fitted my oversized Ramair intake and cleaned the interior

Next steps are to give it a bloody good clean (wheels off, arches out etc)

Love an edition 30 - I’ve got a readers ride thread on mine somewhere - also metallic black 5 door manual.

I’ve recently stuck bigger brakes on the front from an S3 and they make a massive difference. It’s also lowered slightly (had spacers on that I removed due to rubbing).

They respond exceptionally well to a remap - mines currently “Stage 2+” so ~385bhp. It’s a fantastic fun little thing and values seem to be strong

I like the Ed30, my favourite Mk5 by some distance.

I came so close to buying a really nice three door, manual that’s was just around the corner but unfortunately by the time I could get back with my other half it sold.

I’ve done a similar downgrade this year from an M140i to a little 130i Limited Edition ad I’m oddly really pleased with the swap.

Ive had both the standard GTI and an ED30. the ED30 is much, much better. mine was 'stage 1' so around 300bhp. It went really well. It had a cone filter and scorpion cat back exhaust. sounded lovely.

Make sure you check the front arches for rust as the MK5's are notorious for it. Also the cam follower is worth checking. its a half hour job to take it out and check it. loads of vids online about it. it's a £30 part so defo worth doing.

You can 'customise' these cars quite a lot with VAGCOM too, things like the lights/ indicators/various beeps and things on locking the car. You can also add cruise control if it hasnt got it.

I'll have a look for your thread. Brakes aren't high up on my list but may eventually go for something bigger.

Remap might be on the cards. My local specialist is a Revo dealer so they'd fully support a map.

Yeah I've always liked them. It's the one before everything went a bit crazy safety and weight wise.

It's funny that isn't it. Modern hot hatches are great but older ones are probably more fun.

Passenger wing is already gone (one reason I got it cheap), the driver's wing was done a couple of years ago but when I've got the arch linings out I'll check it all properly.

Cam follower is scheduled for Jan when it has a service (it's about a month overdue already). I was going to do it but really cba.

I've got a Milltek exhaust on the way too.

On my list will be a multifunction steering wheel and a big screen MFD then I can get a Polar FIS and have digital speed again (the one thing I miss coming from a modern car)

Nice - funnily enough I was looking at ED30s the other day. Decent ones are verging on bonkers money now - similar price to some mk7 GTIs. That said, I do love the mk5 shape, especially the ED30 with the cherry red rear lights and subtle splitter etc. I had a normal mk5 GTI and it was a great car and the stuff you've mentioned like a MFSW and highline cluster make a big difference. The standard headlights are poor as well - look for some factory xenons. Thats what I loved about the mk5 - there was a seemingly endless supply of used parts and it was dead easy to upgrade to make the cars a higher "factory" spec. The only thing my old one lacked was the factory xenons...

Xenons are on the list too.
After Bi-xenons on my previous E90 and LEDs on the Cupra I hate halogens.

Ive got the MK5 GTi Pirelli, bought it in July this year, it came with a set of Audi/VW BBS alloys from the Edition 30 GTi which were totally original and never been refurbed either. It also had a set of Pirelli wheels that had been marked and kerbed, so i got them refurbed and sold the BBS`s on. Its all back to original now and how i like my cars, I managed to find it with 70k miles on it and just about to tick over to 75k, it has full sevice history and all receipts, i think it will take care of me when i come to sell it.

Small Update. Mainly some photos of what it looks like currently and what I've got to work with.

It's just dirty and a bit unloved:

A few rusty bits too

Dull and flat paintwork

Managed to give the interior a decent clean. Cheap scrub pads, some brushes, DR Leather cleaner and APC and it's a whole lot better. Also did the insides of the windows with neat IPA as they were filthy (the cloth was black afterwards)

Also fitted my Ramair Intake the other day

And Finally, I noticed it had a bit of lacquer peel or bad respray on the passenger rear quarter:

Flatted it back gently and gave it a polish with some Menzerna One step polish (I'm planning on a full polish next week)

Milltek exhaust should be here this week, as will some new headlight and LED bulbs

That paint will come up pretty well with a decent polish (other than the rust). I guess like a lot if cars this age, once they’re out of enthusiast hands they become ‘just a car’. I put a lot of work into I don’t tears of neglect on the 116 we bought from the in laws. It was well serviced it just never ever got cleaned.

Edition 30s have really grown on me recently. In fact, I think I'll start looking for one with factory xenons.

Can you give a bit more detail on how you dealt with the laquer peel please. E.G What did you flat it back with?
I have a patch on my Boxster's door from where a previous owner had some kind of sticker and wondered how to sort it out.

Looking good!

Retrofit xenons is quite easy. A pair of lights is about £200, then adaptor cables are £50 ish and a bit of coding and you're done.

I think lacquer peel was the wrong wording, it's from a blend line of a resprayed panel that's flaked a bit.

Flatted it back with a dry 1200grit 3M Purple finishing disc, then polished it with some compound on a 75mm polishing pad in a cordless drill.
It's getting a full rotary polish in the next couple of weeks so I just wanted to get the worst of the sanding marks out.

Why would you want to fit these?

Washers are a legal requirement with Xenons I believe. They’re a pain in the arse though.
