Discussion
EDIT: No longer a 530d thread, it broke and I got shot!
Well, got rid of my previous clean and tidy, ever reliable and immensely frugal ‘10 e91 320d se this week and bought the F11 just in time for the fuel hike
The 320d

Needed barely anything in the 8 months I owed it, it did 62mpg on a run and took us and our 13 month old to Poland and back without a quibble. We were however slightly cramped by the time the Polish side of the family had each bought us at least one bulky; inconvenient to transport present to return home with and I got to thinking that a little more luxury would be welcome on the next trip in September (assuming Poland is still in its current form)
So, a slightly leggy (132k) 530d enters the chat, I’m still gathering info on it and haven’t run its vin yet to get its info/options but seems to be well specced. I’ll update with the spec sheet when I can. It does has pretty much full Dick Lovett SH and a few other receipts for service items being done so looks like it’s been looked after.
First impressions, it’s a bloody weapon! The N57 is pretty relentless and the 8 speed ZF is silky smooth, I’m guessing it’s had a box service at some point, I hope it has anyway or that’s £475. It's far more comfortable than the 320 and is a step up in every way, really impressed so far.

had its first wash today

It’s had freshly refurbished wheels and brand new Bridgestone Weather.. something or others so had money spent on it recently. I’d have preferred the previous owner try to fix the cold start rough running for the first minute or two
plugging it in points toward a dead glow plug or module which the dealer will cover of course. I did wonder why it was warm when I went to view ..
It’s however a pretty epic thing for comfortably under 5 figures and I’ll look forward to tweaking it. It needs front bumper cams as they’re very foggy at the moment and it’ll be getting a service next week.
I’d also quite like some 17’s for it as I’m a subscriber to the small wheel big tyre philosophy for extra comfort, if anyone wants to swap for an immaculate set of 19’s with new good tyres
That’ll do for now

E91's the LCi ones are very reasonable now, I love mine and will never sell it, I've even thought about getting another one as a 2nd car.ever reliable and immensely frugal ‘10 e91 320d se this week and bought the F11 just in time for the fuel hike

Good upgrade to the F11 though, how's it handle compared to the E91?
I love driving my 3 series, still rather chuckable for a small estate.

I rate the e91 as one of my all time favorite cars, to the point where I was seriously second guessing myself when thinking of selling it. It was in many ways the ideal car. It was plenty quick enough, surprisingly so for a 2.0d, and as you say quite chuckable. The hydraulic steering was leagues above my OH F30 320d MSport. The F11 is still (amazingly) quite sprightly! That can be argued I'm sure but on the way home I gave it some and it didn't completely embarrass itself on fast sweepers and even roundabouts. For a 2 ton 132k wafter it was very keen. I haven't driven it much as couldn't think of a good enough excuse to take it out today but TL;DR, yea it's still a good drivers car.Good upgrade to the F11 though, how's it handle compared to the E91?

I find the electric steering in the F much better than the F30, or at least that of my OH 320d.

Mine is a 2012 320d, last one built on same line as the F31.
Chose this over the F31 touring (I test drove back to back, 8 years ago) just felt alot more solid and well more BMW.
Up to 140,000 miles now, been great, couple of trips over to Italy over the years, managed to do 900+ miles on one tank (great mpg like you said)
Agree with you with the steering feel, very satisfyingly heavy, my wife doesn't like it, but has got use to it over the years now.
Nice F11, though and if I would replace mine this would be up there as a good family car replacement, good luck with it OP!
Lovely touring
Looks better than the 'mint/immaculate' examples I looked at before I settled on my F01 730D SE...
Superb touring and I wanted one to be the successor to my previous Jap import E39 530i Sport Touring but alas none appeared, in the spec I wanted at that time...
But I am still looking at them as my next motor when I get bored of my F01

It really is in superb over all condition. I was also cross shopping with the F01s but settled on the F11, lovely
cars though!
Well the mechanical niggles continue. I was driving down to Cardiff this afternoon when I started to smell unburnt/semi burnt diesel (like a very ‘hydrocarbon-ey’ smell, whatever that actually means). Like following a old bus, but there was no old bus in front of me. Came to a stop at the light aaaaaaaaaand smoke started filling the cabin via the air vents
cool! I thought. Knocked off the HVAC system which stopped it. A quick google search points toward the EGR.
Now at this point the dealer may receive a very angry call from some, i’ll be calling in the morning to update him but will keep it civil for the sake of hopefully getting the now two potential issues sorted under his warranty. so wasn’t expecting completely trouble free motoring and better it do this now rather than in 6 months time when any warranty/good will would have long evaporated.
Will be interesting to see what my garage comes back with this week when it goes in for diagnosis.
Apart from that, it’s still a stunning vehicle and assuming this gets fixed i’ll still be very happy and with a sorted EGR which is no bad thing assuming that’s the culprit

I feel your pain.
Bought a F11 535d Touring in Oct and had issues with oily smell in the cabin and smoke from the scuttle panel.
I thought EGR but was rocker cover gasket, rocker cover is plastic znd it warps over time - great design BMW and made worse by a replacement being £400 plus fitting.
All good now though and really is a great all rounder

Ah is it.. hmm £400 yeesh. Well hopefully that's covered here if the rocker is what it turns out to be.
Glad that sorted it for you though, when these niggles are done I'll be over the moon too!
See the missus said "why are you buying the car so early when we're not going away until Sept.." Little did she know that I was about to buy a lemon and that I had a good idea it would need months of deferred maintenance work doing to it

Haha it was the other way round for me; probably didn't help that the F11s I test drove were dogs though. One at a dealers that when I gave him the cold, hard facts he just shrugged and said that's the way it is... What a knobber! I let him know that too cars though!

I do really like the F11s though and they're deffo on my radar. I do really like my F01 and the step up in luxury it brings, but I do miss the touring capabilities that my previous E39 had...!
Fingers crossed you get these niggles sorted; time to take it back to the dealer and let them sort it all for you really...
Personally I wouldn't get another garage involved; the dealer has to sell a car to you that's fully roadworthy, these issues seem to be cropping up too readily, if that makes sense?

There was a safety recall with the EGR cooler valve or something to do with the EGR.
There has been a number of car fires because of it, so be careful and get it looked at ASAP.
My dads (66)2016 320d, had the recall, then month or so later, the EGR cooler had melted, car had to be towed...£1700 later, it was goodwill, BMW paid it all!!! Dam right it was. There has been a number of car fires because of it, so be careful and get it looked at ASAP.
I’ve got a 2011 E91 320d that I absolutely love, there’s a thread in Readers’ Cars where I wax lyrical about it.. absolutely not a pure petrolhead car but an amazing daily driver, I cannot bring myself to switch it out for something different.
However I’ll keep an eye on this thread because one of the options to replace the E91, if/ when that time comes, will absolutely be an F11 530/535. They’re a really nice design to me and the interior is a fantastic place to be as well.
Fingers crossed you get all these new car niggles sorted out quickly so you can fully enjoy it.

Words of advice - if you notice heavy misting/water in the headlights sort it right away. The manual suggests light misting is to be expected.
My dad has now had both sides replaced (2011 110k) and his are adaptive. He went second hand original on one and new replica part on the other. Both replacements have been fine.
A friend also had one go. - In my small sample of 2 people with an F series, 75% of headlights got filled with water haha
Otherwise cracking cars.

cheers guys. Will look at the headlights.
Just dropped off at my garage, they will diagnose and call the dealer tomorrow to auth repairs. I’m quite interested to see what they find.
As an aside and having done a little research on the issues it seems an intake / head clean would do it to the world of good as the higher mileage ones I’ve seen have horrendous carbon build up. Will sort that later though (along with the cloudy front side bumper cameras)

Sigh..
OK, results back from the garage are a) there's definitely a fault, if not a few and b) they cannot for the life of them trace the faults to anything not working/broken
I’n not blaming the garage here; they're a decent knowledgeable garage but they cant trace it. By the looks of it however they are not the first people to look at these issues. The mechanic there noted in the areas he was looking there were clips, moved/removed and cable ties cut etc so this is not the first time IHO this has been looked at. Bugger.
Spoke to the dealers and they're happy to have it back and provide a courtesy car. I'll be happy for them to fix it if the following is met
The car is stone cold when I go to pick it up to test the cold start
They can provide an invoice of what work was carried out and what has been changed/fixed
A guarantee that the car won't fill with carbon monoxide again whilst my 16 month old is in it (bit of hyperbole there but gets the point across).
If these requirements can't be met I won't be going back to collect the car but will be asking for a refund of course. The dealer is happy to go through the above and time will tell if it gets sorted. I really want to keep enjoying the car so we'll see.
