1998 Porsche 911 C4 (996)
Discussion
It’s funny how as a petrolheads, we spend our lives looking through the various classifieds white you might find cars listed for sale, no matter our specific vehicular interest, merely browsing, in any spare time we can find, with no real intent, ability or means to purchase the car for which we search. Yet sometimes, a car you had rarely, if ever, sifted through advertisements for, ends up in your custody. Well, this is one of those stories.
I hadn’t been looking for a car. Life was incredibly hectic, I already had four cars, some significant changes career wise, family, friends and girlfriend all living scattered across the country, meant the time I had to spend admiring cars I couldn’t quite afford was minimal. And when I was, I was looking for an early F31 330D, to use as a mile muncher.
Then one day, I received a call. My close friend had his neighbour looking to sell his Porsche 911 C4. Knowing me to be a massive Porsche nerd, my friend passed on my name as an interested party. I got the call, went to view the car, and ended up buying it.
I swiftly sold my Saab 9-5 & E91 330D.

The car is a launch spec car as far as I am aware. It has a mere 74,500 miles (73,000 when I collected 3 weeks ago), and 6 previous owners. Very basic spec wise, with slight modifications including a Pioneer head unit, and a set of Dansk backboxes. I absolutely love it. A recent spend of 6k on various bits and pieces makes it all the more appealing.
I’ve already fixed some window seals, a faulty indicator, and replaced the rear high level brake light (the one in the spoiler as well as the external primary one).
Next on the list is a good machine polish.

I've grown to like a 996 these days! look forward to this.. Interesting to see why i might be letting myself in for..
There's plenty of info/thoughts here with people posting up cars that have been advertised and their thoughts on them from what they can see online etc. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... All useful stuff as is the 911uk forum. If you can buy from an enthusiast whose owned the car for a good no. of years with lots of invoices and an annual visit to a specialist, regardless of low mileage, it helps understand how well they've been looked after and will hopefully reduce the possibility of a big bill in the near future. But remember you can't run them indefinitely on a Fiesta sized budget even though they may have cost less than a new Fiesta to buy used
