Not much of a PH worthy car, but saw the recent post about the cheap 107 so figured why not!

I was offered this recently after the owner no longer wanted it. It was going to fail it’s MOT and was previously a cat n for hail damage on the roof (pretty minor) so they didn’t want to spend any more on it.

It’s a 2013 208 1.2 (82bhp!), 63k miles and full history. No MOT - but after 2 tyres, aux belt and an exhaust (cheap pattern part off eBay) it passed no problem. Owes me £500ish as it stands. Replaced front speakers as they weren’t great, and fitted a pure DAB radio antenna.

Didn’t really need a 3rd car but it was cheap, tax is £20 a year, seems to run on thin air so might keep it for a bit. I’ve been using it for the daily/mundane journeys to work etc - makes driving the Cayman more enjoyable for social stuff etc.

Anyone else bought an MOT failure and done similar?

All it needs now is a new wet cam belt.

Doubt it will look so cheap then.

For what it cost it might be worth just seeing how long the belt lasts!

Yeah the belt is due about now. I got it MOT’d on the 28th June and been using it since then so it’s no huge loss.

Think it’s quite an expensive job? Tbh I’ve not looked into it.

That's about half what my neighbour was getting quoted for his Ecoboost Fiesta a couple of years ago!

Wow...that's a bargain. Even with the replacement belt it's still under a grand it'll owe you. I recently sold an 09 plate Ford Ka for £2k and that's 4 years older than your 208 and not as nice either.

The problem as I understand it, is the belt starts to break up, and deposit 'rubber filings' in the oil, which in turn block the oil ways, especially the VVT valves. This brings engine management lights up, and makes the engine run poorly, usually before the turbo fails.
Not Peugeots finest idea to my mind.

So if you want to keep it running nicely, change the belt (the later belts were much more resistant to the oil), and change the oil every 5k or so. You might get away with it then.

Totally agree, daft idea. First car I've had with a wet belt. If I can get the belt done for £400ish, the car still only owes me £900 which I should get back if I sell it. I've already had 5 months use out of it, so it's been cheap motoring just on the fuel I've saved not using the cayman daily..

If you can get the wet belt done at that price, seems a no brainer, and then run it on a shoestring budget, see how you go, cracking bargain! Don't think you can get a good curry and a few beers for much less that that when out with friends!

Please make yourself welcome on the "joy of running a shed thread" it's the best thread on PH in all honesty.

I got a Saab 900 for free once (long ago now). Was one of the best cars I had. Ran it for several years and was really enjoyable to drive.

What a neat little thing. Shame there's no chain conversion kit for the wet belt.

I saved this little Fiesta from the scrapper. Cost me £200 (back in Nov 2020). 150,000 miles on an 07 plate.

I sorted a few small jobs and gave it a service and it went through the MOT. Been a fantastic little car and is now on 173,000 miles. As it has proved to be so useful it is now used more than the rest of the fleet and indeed, my daughter is now learning to drive in it.

Had the cambelt done last year, as it had zero history, and spent about £1000 on it over the 3 years in maintenance (incl all new tyres and a double din Android Auto head unit).

I am extremely fond of it now and it is my car of choice in the morning!

This is turning into 'the joy of running an old shed'

If you are interested in the cheap old Peugeot, you will find a spiritual home in 'the joy'

I see that you are in Gloucestershire. I am in South Gloucestershire and had the wet belt plus oil and filter changed on my daughter's 208 for around £410 in a local garage.
Can provide details if you wish.

The garage is MDT Auto Engineers, BS37 9XD, 01454 228 729. Contact is Mark Davis.

Only ever had really good service from them. No connection other than as a happy customer.
