Put a deposit on this today, fancied something that's the opposite of the Fiesta ST, cant bear to part with that so it stays and I went diesel rather that V8 for now to keep the costs down, and to be honest its quick enough.

2014 XJ Portfolio in "Amethyst" (very, very dark purple, basically black) with black leather and Piano black interior, its not perfect paint wise with a few blemishes but the spec and 62k mileage were compelling. Drives really nicely, pick it up next monday all being well, dealer is redoing the wheels and a little paint.

Will get some more photos when I get it.

Fabulous cars, I've had two, a 3.0d and I'm currently running a Supersport, both have been absolutely no trouble at all and a real joy to own.

Stick the gearbox in sport and turn on dynamic mode and you'll be very impressed how quickly it can cover ground and even in mooching mode they're great. The ride is bordering on "what were they thinking" for a luxury barge, but the way it drives makes it more than worth it.

Not totally the polar opposite of the Fiesta.

Both drivers cars.

Nice buy.

edited: skim read and thought it was V8, wise choice to cancel and wait

Have had second thoughts this evening, going to cancel and defer until next year and go for the V8 option, it's very nice but feel like I am setting for a diesel one and will regret rushing into it.

Good decision, diesel has rapidly fallen out of favour and continues to do so.

If you are going to do it, do it properly.

I need to buy something to tow with, and given the similarities in price, the fact I have no desire to own a diesel and the plethora of extra issues owning/running an old diesel can bring, i've just started looking at the petrol variants. Just got to wait for a cheap snotty ML55 now....

Another +1 for the V8 option. Definitely.
I bought a 2.5 Legacy and regretted not getting the 3 litre.
I bought a diesel A7 and regretted not getting the TFSI.
I bought a 1.8 Sierra and regretted not getting the 2 litre.
I bought a 16v Corrado and regretted not getting the G60.
I bought a diesel Landcruiser Colorado and regretted not getting the 3.4 petrol.
I could go on! Worth waiting for.

Ha, what a turn around! I'm a big fan of this generation XJ but I think you would be settling for the diesel when what you really want is the V8.

As I said in one of my previous posts though; what you need to do is buy my S-Type R! For the price of that XJ, you'd get a supercharged V8 with plenty of money for maintenance. I've already taken care of the sill issues, so money saved for you. Go on, you know you want too smile

Did the phone call of shame to the dealer, they were keen to address whatever I was not happy about, partly for a sale of course but also seemed concerned that I wasnt happy.

Send yesterday evening stressing, I always do when I buy a car but decided that this isnt the one, might have cost myself £500 here and am just waiting to hear if they will refund me the deposit, expensive lesson but better than going through and ending up with a car I dont 100 percent want.

Wasnt happy with the paint in places, they said its gone in for paint yesterday afternoon, yeah, right... I left at two and its already in paint at 9 am this morning, having got a litre of that colour yesterday, they said they will paint the whole side, dont really want one thats had a load of paint to be honest.

I ignored my gut feel once before, didnt want to lose a deposit and regretted it after.

Not my style normally and feel a bit embarrassed but better that than being stuck with a car I dont love.

You’re the customer, it’s your money and yeah I’d be amazed if they’d started painting it within 24 hours hehe
How can they address your issues? Well, if they’ve got a spare V8 and gearbox kicking about in the workshop…

Hmmmm, if you had distance bought it then there should be no problem. I ordered a brand new car over the phone 18 months ago without stepping foot in the dealers and decided I didn't want it the week before it was due to arrive. The dealer wasn't happy, but after repeating the distance selling rules a few times I got it back.

Second hand sales from what looks a non franchised dealer? Depends on how they are feeling on the day. Years ago I went with a friend to buy a Porsche Boxster from a one man band dealer and she put down a £1000 deposit that he said was refundable. She subsequently changed her mind and he suddenly changed his tune and refused to return the money.

One of her friends is a solicitor so helped her out as he hates used car dealers and it ended up going to the small claims court. In the end she got her money back minus the price of two new tyres he agreed to fit as part of the deal.

How much are we talking?

I think I'd walk from anything needing major paint unless it was very cheap, especially on a car where they sold loads.

Fully support the decision to go for a V8, the diesel was an excellent car but the supercharged V8 is absolutely amazing. Even compared to other cars with similar power figures they feel absolutely batst crazy because of the instant response to the throttle and the noise they make.

I absolutely adore mine.

I've put a few deposits down in the past, always £500, then like you got cold feet on reflection and had to call the dealer to cancel.

I've never had an issue getting a deposit back, although sometimes I've had to be quite persistent with chasing (amazing how long it can take accounts to process a refund!).

Even if you lose the deposit, it'll be way less than the depreciation suffered if you bought the car and sold it in short order!

Good luck.

Is that a Euro 5 one at 18k? Low miles but at least one contributor here says trade prices are... Down.

Certainly not seeing it with asking prices, the later Euro 6 ones seem strong still, esp with low miles!

My Supersport was sold by QCT a year before I bought it, the ad is still up

https://www.qualitycarstoday.co.uk/vehicle-details...

Their stuff is always top drawer, extremely well presented, and having often seen it go through BCA before it appears on their website their margins aren't outrageous either.

These guys sold it a few years earlier too and if anything present their cars even better.
