Notwithstanding the usual “what car…” threads, this is my first proper thread so do bear with.
I’ve had all sorts of nice bits in my car life, 2017 M3 / 2017 X5 40e, 2020 Golf GTI PP etc. A combination of generally being thoroughly bored of car payments and having bought a house to flip for thought I’d see the biggest petrol vehicle I could get for less than 2 months of van rental.
Behold “Doggo”. Number plate, its most frequent passenger and the type of work it will do has lead to the name.
What is doggo, you may be thinking. Well it’s a 2006 (yes, hello tax man) Range Rover Vogue L322 4.4 Petrol V8. Mileage is marginally closer to 100,000 than 200,000, I haven’t checked how many owners but expect “5+” and it has no history, 1 key and MOT until Oct.
Let’s see how long my interpretation of bangernomics alongside man maths goes…
I have of course taken the photo outside a petrol station based on a the statistical likelihood that it will be outside / inside one.
Being 27 myself as well as Doggo being a post March 2006 car the insurance and tax are more than the car itself. Unless my partner has started reading pistonheads, in which case it was certainly in the lowest band for both….

Yes it’s the Jaguar AJV8 I believe. I’m not sure on the advantages or disadvantages to each of the BMW V8 or the Jaguar V8 but I think the engine feels excellent. Fuel economy is not to be discussed but the low mileage I’ll do in it means I’m not concerned.So, the post purchase expenditure stands as follows:
- £35 in Halfords on leather cleaner and a Maguires scent bomb which was thoroughly needed as it had a terrible smell of tobacco.
- £18 on some upper boot struts. I value my head…
- £13 on a Holts Headlight repair kit
The shopping list stands at:
- £110 on a rear view camera. The screen is currently black on mine.
- £160 on at least one rear air bag as I am sure it’s sagging overnight unless paranoia is getting the better of me.
- £275 on a set of front tires. There’s a rogue Pirelli on the front with a date stamp of 0509! I’d love to know its story as there’s no way it’s been on there for 15 years. It’s cracked, but wasn’t mentioned in the MOT.
I’ll buy a service kit as it has no history. But then hopefully, other than a couple of wiper blades, there’s no more to spend.

The L322 is for me the sweet point of a RR, and for sub 2k an absolute steal.
Running costs may/will (delete as appropriate) ruinous, but it’s all part of the cheap RR journey.
As much as I like a RR, I’ve had a couple and they were a pain in the arse to live with frankly, constantly needing attention, worse than a woman.
