Volvo XC90 D5 2006
Discussion
So my 2005 BMW X5 3.0d was written off after being reversed in to at work.
I was essentially paid out £2000 and did not want another X5. This left me looking at XC90 and Touareg.
Obviously, I have ended up with a D5 XC90. But what you can get for £2000 these days in terrible. Spares and repairs going for £1000-1500 etc.

So its the 2.4 D5, 6 speed auto, worn cream leather interior but comfortable, 7 seats with 3rd row folding (I had to youtube how to fold these down!) 182 BHP model. Tax is through the roof, I should have maybe gone for the slightly earlier model but its done now.
It's been looked after and had money spent on it over the years with servicing and tyres and track and tie rods etc and had the cambelt done, It is on 170,000 miles now though.
Anyway the car was for me to get to work and back and to hack around with the family with some space and double buggy in the boot. But my Mrs has just informed me that or my birthday in July she has booked for us to go to Cornwall. So that means the car need to be ready for the 5 1/2 hour each way drive.
Mainly being, the air con does not work. I got some new headlight bulbs at Halfords and they checked the aircon gas me for and there is gas in the system. They seem to think the compressor kicked in but this needs checking properly. When I drive with the aircon switched on and the fans turned on there is a whooshing noise from behind the dash and the engine sounds louder. When the air con is switched off but the fans are still on the noise from behind the dash and the engine noise seems to disappear. So if anyone has has similar I would appreciate where to start. I have seen some posts online but not had the time to really sit and read, but this involves shims and the clutch plate but this seems to be more aimed at intermittent air con where mine has not worked since ownership.
First things first will be a full service and have a look over the car. Suspension seems smooth but the engine seems a little jolty when pulling away so assuming there is engine mountings needing replacement and probably the lower gearbox mount.
I would like some black leather if I can find a set within reason.
Look at the paint on the rear quarter and see what can be done there too.
I want to look at the swirl flaps and possible removal.
MOT is due in October so while getting the car ready for Julys trip, I need to also make sure stuff I do has the car ready for another year.
Updates soon. Good to be back in another D5, I previously had an S60.

Nice! Very tempted to get one of these, I keep looking at them as a family hauler. Tax is incredibly spicy as you've noticed - but something you can hide due to the lower purchase price.
Be interested on how you get on, as they are well within shed budget now!
Keep reading differing opinions, ranging from - absolutely bullet proof reliability, to the worst car I have ever had for non-engine related issues.

Thought I'd say hi as a fellow XC90 owner (well the wife owns one) we have the 2011 D5 200.

Well I will try to keep the thread updated as much as possible!Be interested on how you get on, as they are well within shed budget now!

So the thread has been a little quiet. 2 weeks after ownership a lady who lives across the street pulled out of a side road that I was pulling in to and hit my rear bumper. The volvo was pretty much fine, costmetic damage on the rear bumper and OSR wheel arch trim. The lady's 21 plate VW Golf come off far worse. Volvo Tank 1 - 0 German Hatch.
Anyway, the lady went through insurance and that meant my car was also repaired, surprisingly not written off which I wouldn't have minded to be honest, hadn't built a connection with the car by this point. The garage had the car for around a month.
We had a trip to Cornwall planned that was fast approaching with considerations of taking my work car, the Tesla Model 3 AWD LR, which I am glad we did not take now.
Anyway, the Volvo was purchased needing some love.
One of the biggest concerns was the AUX belt and tensioner. It was rattling away and I had been driving a ticking time bomb.
Got this fixed on the Saturday and we were leaving Sunday. And of course I received wrong parts from a motor factors, then having to use Euros and travelling to 2 separate branches to get items.
Anyhow, old belt cut off.

Trying to find the bolt that we could see in the new, wrong item, we soon realised I was supplied the wrong part and my item come with the idler installed and had different fitting mounts.

So installed an INA tensioner and a Continental belt. Around £200 total.

Some concerning build up.

Oil & Filter change time. This is the recommended oil grade but I am high mileage so using this as a flush essentially and will do another oil service soon. Car is now on 172K

And with that, I drove home and the car felt so much better and sounded better now the tensioner had been replaced.
Car loaded up in the morning, filled up at Costco and 275 miles later we arrived in Cornwall.

Widemouth Beach

Somewhere around Coombe.

Drove down many roads as such.

758 miles door to door we arrived home.

The MOT is due next month so in the urgent, headlights need polishing, I also need a lower engine gearbox mount, my screenwash has stopped working out the bonnet but sprays the headlights and rear window so assuming an easy fix! Handbrake needs some work, front discs and pads work but are warped. I need new wing mirror glass, although not an MOT fail one is generic badly fitted part and one I have had to super glue back on and I I managed to get glue on the glass itself. Tracking also. Oh and oil leaking from the gearbox. Fun.
Updates soon.

We had one of these back in the day - an awesome car with the most comfortable seats of any of the 53 cars I've owned, including a Bentley, an S Class Mercedes and multiple Saabs. The mechanicals are pretty much bullet-proof but ancillaries can be a pain, with the orange triangle of doom an all-too frequent visitor
