I thought it only fitting with two other sub 1k Cayenne threads running I d add mine into the mix, these really are the cheapest way into Porsche ownership currently.

I d always fancied one to run as a daily, alongside my now departed 997. I seen this one locally on a Cayenne owners FB group as an MOT fail for £1000. Its remote location (NE Scotland) put many prospective purchasers off and I managed to secure it for £950.

The MOT fail was a rear spring, the seller showed me a huge pile of invoices, history and his purchase invoice last year for nearly £5000 from a dealer, I thought I d hit the jackpot with it.

My enthusiasm drained as fast as the exhaust flexi as soon as it was started up, bks.

I d agreed to buy it, and I stand by my word we renegotiated another £50 off as I knew that leaking flexi was going to be a complete ballache to repair.

Loaded up and headed home

I got a friend to do the rear spring, I just bought a complete unit with damper from eBay but he wasn t too keen on doing the flexi pipe, so I took it back and after a few hours wrestling with it, it was out.

I had a new flexi welded in, bought some new gaskets, manifold studs and nuts from TPS (mechanically they are essentially a Touareg) then duly reinstalled it all and took it for MOT which it thankfully passed

It was then treated to a bath and it s been used sparingly since

Initial impressions are it s gutless, the 4WD solenoid needs replaced and it s overdue an engine service but I for the grand total of £1150 all in with a years MOT I m delighted with it. Even the air conditioning works.

Mine (£500 3.2) is a bit gutless around 2000rpm but then picks up nicely as it gets into it's torque curve.

Have a look at the Evap diaphragm - if it's perforated or the interconnecting pipework has a leak then the engine runs lean.

Replacement diaphragms are available from AliExpress

I’ll look into it but I’m sure it’s ok as it runs fine other than that.

One job I do need to do is the 4wd solenoid as it’s sticking and throwing a fault

Have a look through my £500 Cayenne thread - I took the actuator apart, cleaned and greased the gears and it stopped the 4wd fault.

The actuator / stepper motor constantly varies the torque front and rear - on early Cayennes it operates a lot and can lead to the unit 'burning out'
Later years have a different module letter code that operates the stepper less and can be retrofitted.

It can also be a sign of battery health as the stepper motor is the first thing to be affected when battery voltage gets a bit low but it's probably easier to clean and grease the stepper unit than it is changing the battery!
